I'm having a C section, the only thing I have to potentially compare the pain during recovery to in order to prepare myself mentally, is an adult tonsillectomy. Personally I've never experienced pain like it and was in absolutely agony for a good 2 weeks before any relief.
For anyone who's had their tonsils removed as an adult, which did you find worse recovery wise?

I had my tonsils out at 22 following quinsy and personally that was awful.
My two caesareans were easy. I took a week of prescribed medication, was up and walking within hours and at Costco and the pub 5 days after baby 1. It felt to me both times like a rough period, achey and cramping which is normal if you are also breastfeeding as your uterus is contracting. It wasn’t painful, just tiring and annoying more than anything. After a week I wasn’t on any meds at all.

I had them removed around 12yo but they used to use scalpel and stitches. Now they use lasers with cauterization. Id say my csection was 10 fold that of my tonsillectomy. I couldn't swallow for 3-4 weeks and lost 30lbs. But my csection was horrible. Albeit i did push for 5.5 hours and ended up with a uterine infection. Ive heard from many women that the elective csections aren't as bad as unscheduled/emergency csections. Get a wedge pillow for your bed and lookup how to get up after a csection to save you some pain.

So I had my tonsils out the year before age 28 and I promise a c section recovery is a lot easier and less painful! I was on max dosage of all meds after my tonsils and I was given morphine to take home 🫠 I was given some meds after c section but no where near what I was taking after my tonsils! If you have a tickle throat or cough don’t get me wrong you’ll feel pain but no where near the same pain in my opinion.

I had my tonsils removed at 16. Not quite a adult, but close enough. I've had 2 c section. To me, they're not comparable. Sure my throat was very sore and it was hard to eat, but the mobility issues after having a c section was more difficult. I practically lived in a waist trainer so that I could go around my home and do basic things.

Everyone is different I have had 2 unplanned sections. My advice would be get a note pad and pen and start writing down the time when you take each dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol so you are ontop of when you can have your next dose. Make sure you have enough at home before you go into hospital so you don’t run out. I would say have a weeks supply to be on the safe side

Such a hard comparison! I think the pain of the tonsillectomy was worse for me but only because I think all the happy birth hormones overtook the pain for me with my c section. Not being able to eat made me really miserable after the tonsillectomy but one key thing was I slept a lot of the two weeks after the tonsillectomy and not being able to sleep after the c section was a killer. Also with the tonsillectomy I only had myself to worry about. But with the c section recovering from major surgery whilst being entirely responsible for a newborn is crazy really.

Whilst I’ve not had my c section yet, I’ve had multiple open surgeries on my lower abdomen /bikini line and keyhole too which were painful and tricky but can’t compare to tonsils. Pain in your head / throat is a lot harder to forget and block out than pain elsewhere, for me anyway. For my tonsils I was in a bad way but post abdomen surgeries, with my painkillers I’ve been up and moving fairly quickly. The worst bit is the trapped gas and bowel movements do need to keep hydrated and have peppermint tea and chewing gum to reactivate the bowels after abdo surgery. Then just need to keep on top of painkillers and don’t overdo it.
I’m having an elective section and have no way let my previous surgeries put me off, so I hope that helps a little!
