Hi guys,
I was wondering or hoping someone has some advice or suggestions for our situation.
My son is going into nursery at 13 months so he starts Monday. In September my husband decided to retrain to be a teacher doing his one year to complete. He was working before that. As he's a student we can't get the 30 free hours a week as he's not classed as a working parent and we don't claim any benefits.
I've been on maternity so my pay is significantly lower this year and have took the full year. With that being said our income would be around 20k which is too high for the childcare grant.
The nursery is going to cost around 1000 a month as I'll have one day a week off and my mom is going to look after my son on another day.
I'm panicking because if we don't get the childcare bursary or the 30 free hours we will have no money left after our bills and childcare come out.
My husband has got a £9000 student loan to cover the studying period.
Does anyone have any advice or ideas as I genuinely don't think we'll be able to live?
I can't understand how two working parents, if you were single working parent, if you claimed benefits you can get the free hours but we'd be expected to live off my low earnings and pay for nursery so there must be something I'm not aware of?

What was your plan for childcare BEFORE he decided to become a student again?
I don’t think you’re missing anything, this is just how the crappy system is. You’re not rewarded for working in this country. Be thankful your nursery bill is only a grand, I was paying 2 grand a month until my daughter was 3 and the 30hrs kicked in under the old system before they changed it being eligible at 9 months.
If all of your salary will be going towards paying childcare then you’ll just have to quit and be a SAHM and claim whatever benefits you would both be entitled to.

So is the grand a month to cover the 3 days a week?
Can you negotiate working less hours or part-time at your job? Or even if you could change your hours around so you can work in the evenings at home instead?
Failing that, your other option would be to quit and look for another job where you could work nights/opposite shifts to your partner. This would mean no nursery so you don’t have to pay out for childcare and then you’d be working when they’re asleep, such as carer jobs, supermarket shelf stacking, cleaner etc.
Will your husband not be working on his 4 days off?

Can your Mum not look after your son full time instead of you paying for childcare? Or can you not share the childcare around other family members?
