I went over my son’s dad’s for thanksgiving and it was very tense. My bf’s close family was nice but their extended family was mostly stand offish. Or they’d offer two words here or there then just say nothing else. Idk I think at one point they didn’t even know I was with my bf so they asked his mom who I was. Mind you I was at last years thanksgiving….
That tells you how rare it is that they come around. So I felt like they were overly judgemental and perhaps racist? I’m black and his family inclinduing himself is white. Like there were no overt obvious words that could be used as an example of racism but I could just feel it in the air. Or they were just rude and uptight. His aunt is the nicest woman ever but her uh trans son is a b word. And then the rest of the extended family seemed to be not really caring about me or our son.
But Ik if one of their own had a kid they’d be all over them and playing the role of uncle. Sadly my son has non active uncles and cousins in his life who are too socially inept to even be in that role. Like it’s gen z I swear, we’re too awkward, incapable of just extending the barest hints of kindness/friendship. The new generation of aunts and uncles are lacking fr. Then they excluded my bf as well, he’s not really close with his brother and step brothers so they all sat off in the backyard without him and he mostly stayed sitting next to me.
So I just felt like not being there, it’s like a bunch of miserable people coming together and pretending to be one big happy family…

Sometimes it might just be that awkward part of not knowing how to interact with people you don't know? Hard to know without being there, but definitely a possibility!!! Some purely just aren't good with social interactions unless they've known someone for years.
