My baby will be 6 months old soon. How do I start weaning? Do I do one food per day? I see people giving porridge? Do I do this every day? When do I start doing 3 meals a day? I’m baffled. Help!

At around 6 months, start with 1 small meal a day after milk. Milk is still the main nutrition.
Begin with single foods (veg, fruit, or iron-rich foods) mashed or puréed. Porridge is fine but doesn’t need to be every day.
Increase gradually:
6–7 months: 1 meal a day
7–8 months: 2 meals a day
9 months+: 3 meals + snacks
Follow baby’s cues — some days they eat more, some less
Offer a variety of foods
Give small sips of water with meals
Avoid salt, sugar, and honey
Keep mealtimes relaxed.
Wait 2–3 days before introducing another, to watch for allergies.

Also Patience with new foods: It may take 10–15 tries before a baby accepts a new taste its normal and not a refusal.
Thank you! So I give the same food every day for 2-3 days then give another food?

If it’s a common allergen give it on its own for a couple of days in the morning to watch for a reaction; if not then you can mix and match as you want.
You’re looking at small bites / spoons at first, not full meals, and expect baby to be happy with like 5 mins in a high chair.
Start with whatever meal makes sense for you. A lot of people do porridge as it’s easy to make and adapt but it’s not necessary if it’s not something you eat / make yourself.
Remember it’s a huge new skill for them so reactions like ‘yucky’ faces, gagging, spitting, throwing etc aren’t necessarily to do with the food but more to do with wider development.
Have a look at the NHS guidance plus Boob to Food, Charlotte Sterling Reed and Annabelle Karmel as good starting points.
And finally remember every baby is different! Some click on straight away, some take a while, it’s not always an easy journey but you can make it a fun one x
