Snacks, their favourite toy.
We drove from Stratford to Pittsburgh (approx 6hr trip, so not as long). Our son was 2 and he slept most of the time.
We also had a playlist of songs they liked. His favourite song at the time was "I'm on my way" the proclaimers

What kinds of things do the kids play with at home? How can you replicate that on a smaller scale, safely in a moving car?

Plan on stopping every 2ish hours for a "body break." Get out of the car, go to the bathroom, stretch legs, eat a snack.

Yoto with headphones. Toddler camera. Books. Snacks. Stickers. Talking about what’s going on/the new things they’re seeing on the way.

The last far traveling I did with my kiddo was when she was 2, we drove 15 hours for my cousins wedding in New Jersey. I brought some dry erase markers and a little shapes learning book, some play dough, one of those led drawing pads, a couple small toys and a bunch of snacks ofc. Taking lots of stops and telling her where we are, what new thinks we see

If they’re awake - stop every 2 hrs. & take the baby out to stretch - healthy spine - read about this! Can barely move in car seats. Plus a good opportunity to grab a drink /bathroom break for everyone.
Fresh snacks - cut up fruit.
Order burger patties (we don’t give the full burger, just the meat).
A protein cookie, they’re large and last long - break up a little piece here and there.
Different styles of paper (remains novel) / marker/crayon etc. books - read & describe photos. Hold up different cards and play a game - which card is the ___.
Pink noise machine or phone on low.
mesh screens (at dollar store) or blanket, to block sun on the 2 back windows.
Change the speaker settings on car - away from the kids ears/side.
Also, don’t engage the ENTIRE ride - give activity/stuff animal - let them enjoy the view & practice self entertainment.
save the attention for the harder moments. This tip helped us when we drove to Florida from Toronto! 💜 have fun’ 🤩
