Hi ladies, I’d really appreciate some advice because I’m overthinking this 😅

I’m currently on maternity leave UK (started 27 April last year) and due to return on 28 April this year. My SMP has finished and I’m now in the unpaid part of leave. I’m not working at the moment and my role is covered.

My contract says I have to give 2 months’ notice.

I have an interview coming up and if I get the job, they may want me to start before my 2-month notice would be up. It’s not a competitor and I wouldn’t be taking any clients or confidential info.

If I resign and start the new job before my notice period ends (while still on unpaid maternity leave), would that actually cause legal problems? Or is it more of a “technical breach” situation that doesn’t realistically go anywhere? My employer is veeeery difficult.

I just want to understand the real risk before making any decisions.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Thank you 💛

If you got enhanced mat leave - you’d have to pay it back to them most likely

Not been in your situation but the website ‘maternity action’ covers loads of stuff like this x

I would be honest and upfront with any job you apply for, that you hope and think it's likely to be able to get around the requirements of your contract due to the fact you're on mat leave anyway but that if that's not possible you won't be able to start until X date.

Congratulations on your new job!

Because you are down to nil pay from your employer, they wouldnt ask you to repay any mat leave pay.

Could you ask for your notice to run during maternity leave and agree an earlier end date?
That would let you start your new job as well as give them a little bit of notice to sort permanent cover for your job?

This may be bad advice, but how senior are you in the company? In my experience, companies really only pursue legal action for breaches of contract if you’re very senior (and expensive) so like VP level to c-suite. If you’re lower level it usually isn’t worth it to them to kick up a fuss

Money wise there isn’t an issue, but there is still a process to an employee leaving, and as you’re technically still in contract you’ll be in breach of that. If you’re saying they’re difficult they could come after you for that. Is it worth the risk?

Also from an HMRC viewpoint, when you start your new job you’ll be put on emergency tax as you’ll still be listed as employed elsewhere.

Honestly? Just tell them.

It would technically be a breach of contract if you didn’t work your full notice, but in reality employers can’t force you to work it.

The only thing they could potentially do is claim for financial loss — and that’s rare, especially if you’re on unpaid maternity leave and your role is already covered. It’s usually not worth pursuing unless someone is very senior or business-critical.

If you get the job, the safest option is to ask your current employer for an early release — many agree, particularly when someone’s already on unpaid leave.

Just double-check your contract for any repayment of enhanced maternity pay, as that’s the main thing that can catch people out.

Tell them. Its the right thing to do. Also, have you taken all of your leave from the financial year you arent working? They will owe you that if you haven't.

Friends

No judgement please,

I’m 34 years old, north east and never really had ‘my girls’ where we go for drinks and meals. I have friends but no one who would really invite me anywhere. Looking for at least one person who I can message (texts) and be like I’ve got my girl. Someone who would be willing to go watch musicals or a murder mystery at the theatre, cinema, coffee, walks, drinks. Looking for a friend for life.

Cheesy I know sorry

New here

Hello everyone! My name is Jessica, I’m 25 years old. I have a 3 year old son named Josiah. I’m still learning the app but so far this seems like a great outreach for moms. I am a fulltime working single mom, my son doesn’t have much family outside of me and my dad. I am really looking for people who are open to making lifelong connections! (My goal honestly is to find someone and become so close that our children will refer each other as their cousin)

Is this petty?

I’ve been talking to this guy for like four months and granted I already said that I am an extremely fertile person and if I were to get pregnant again, I would be having an abortion, but his communication has been iffy for the last month and some change, but like I don’t know if I’m hormonal or whatever the case maybe but he hasn’t responded since yesterday nine in the morning it is 126 the next today and the last message did not go through, but he still has me on Snapchat and don’t get me wrong. I did block him on my messages because I’m not doing that back-and-forth and I do mean it. I will not be keeping this kid. I already have one. I’m good on two, but is it very toxic of me to want to create a panic because you’re immature for that and granted I’m probably immature for this too, but I really don’t give a damn I’m irritated.

How much do you spend on birthdays / Christmas?

Constant argument with my partner on how much is okay to spend! This year I have spent less but by thrifting have still got a similar amount of pressies for her, which he now says it’s both the cost and the amount of presents that bothers him.

I would say I spend approx £100 (slightly less / more depending). Same for Christmas.

Thanks in advance!

The app

How is everyone finding the app? I have spoke to some really lovely people but haven’t actually gotten to meet anyone yet which is what I was hoping for, to get me out the house x
