Who else is having to change their spending habits because of living costs?

We both earn decent money and since I was say mid/ late 20s, I've never worried about how much I'm spending on food. It's got to the point where I am spending £160 a week on groceries. This is crazy. I've just gone on my Tesco app and changed everything to basic and own brand and got it down to £107 but I feel sad, we shouldn't have to do this. I don't know how people are coping. We're probably middle earners on £32k and £45 and are suddenly not having enough money to last the month and we only spend on things to do with our toddler!

Judging by your comments, you didn't have a toddler in your mid 20s. If you were still childless and living in the same exact accommodations as you were then, I imagine you would have more wiggle room.

We’ve adjusted some things that are easy fixes, like quitting some memberships and doing a lot more DIY stuff.

However for us we just had to earn more. I took another promotion between baby 1 and 2, studied for another part time degree, went back full time and added more to the household income. My husband did the same, earning a higher income.

Between our 20s childless and our 30s with two kids our incomes have more than doubled and that’s the only way we stayed afloat. If we were still on our salaries from 5-10 years ago we’d be buggered here in London.

Feeling the pressure aa I am newly single on around £39k a year. Its Lidl or Asda or bust here!

I’m not feeling it but I think it’s because I’m naturally quite frugal. I always cook from home rarely get take out because I just don’t really like to I am shocked when people say they order out multiple times a week. I do like to dine out occasionally though. I enjoy buying things off Vinted and finding a good deal plus I pretty much walk everywhere. That being said we do live in a small two bed apartment and I’d love to move into a house but right now that would definitely leave us with less income so we’re just making that sacrifice which will mean we have more disposable income

Avatar

It was already bad for us, we've already had to switch brands and things... but now? I feel like throwing up every time I go shopping cause I'm losing more money than I used to

Avatar

The price of minced meat had me gobsmacked last night 😲 then the price of cheese too! We've started buying certain things at Costco - peppers, cheese, fries, bread, onions - all cheaper in Costco and last longer too but just such a ballache going there

Avatar

I had to get a full time job because we could no longer survive without it.

We quit almost all our tv subscriptions , I meal plan for the week and buy only what we need , I don’t buy snacks or treats , no one gets new clothes ever and my toddler gets hand me downs from friends/family ,

Avatar

We've just done our finances and after absolutely everything, we should have £700 each disposable income. That should be enough but I think we've been spending lots on days out etc

Avatar

We're high earners (£105k and £97k) and we try to keep costs low so spend up to £100 a week on food with the odd top up shop for bread, milk and fruit if needed.

You also have more disposable income each month than we do 🙈 we give ourselves £500 each as pocket money to spend or save as we wish.

I was paying 975 a month for a 4 bedroom house in 2019 now I’m paying 2250 for 3 bedroom 🥲🥲🥲🥲

My husband has increased his income every year, we both have our vehicles paid off, don’t have credit card debt etc but if you’d have told me 10 years ago the annual income I’d have by now I’d have been like wow so I’m gonna be wealthyyyy🤪💅 but no, things have gotten so bad that I’m still not saving for retirement, still having to budget militaristically, still can’t afford to buy a home, just fricken grinding lol. I mean I’m grateful I’m always able to provide the basics for my kids but it really feels boomers kicked the latter out from under them and are now playing in our faces as if people just dont have grit anymore to make it to what they were so easily able to achieve

Avatar

They've started putting chocolate in locked boxes in the shops here 🥲🥲

We spend a crazy amount in the supermarket every night and it adds up so quickly over the month. We’re thankfully not in a position where we need to change our spending habits but wish we could make more of an effort to try and save on costs.

When I was on maternity leave we did make a conscious effort to lower our costs in Tesco. We continued to buy the stuff we liked but I made a meal planner and bought everything online and I collected weekly. We saved so much money. I don’t know if that would be worth trying? X

Avatar

Yep but my situation is completely different because I’m currently not working solo mum to 2 kids. I’ve always been a budgeter however now I definitely know I have zero wiggle room.

Avatar

YES OMFG I am SAHM but I’m retired medically from the military so I get a nice check on top of my husband working at the VA doing lots of overtime and somehow we’re still struggling it makes no sense 😭

We just finished paying off a car loan, so we’re ok.

I can’t apologize

Anytime my husband is angry at me , he uses words like fool, stupid, I regret marrying u etc . Even when I’m wrong I can’t apologize cos I get hurt and he in turn gets mad that I don’t take accountability. For context 90% of our Arguments is about the house being tidy.

Am I being petty

I swear I've woken up on the wrong side of the bed which doesn't help this scenario.
But am I being petty for being severely pissed off at my partner.
He puts the bottles on the steriliser. Didn't fill up or put the kettle on. Didn't fill the power pots ready.
Asked him to shut the blinds in my eldest room as you could see right in. Come back from shop they were still open.
Hasn't loaded in dishwasher in over a week.

I literally been feeling like a single mother these days. Like I know he is working more than usual but cumon he was already half prepping the bottles.

Is my boyfriend too traditional or selfish?

He says he gives 8 hours of his life to his job M-F and he’s tired of coming home to do things he doesn’t want to/be inconvenienced. He’s talking about watching our son while I go to the food pantry. I can’t take our son because it’s a lot for me as I’m 8 months pregnant. My son is 10 months pregnant.

He was raised in a traditional home where his mom would do everything for him and his dad would work. He never did the dishes, cooked, or did his own laundry. I know he expects the same from me. I am trying my best to give him that since I’m a SAHM but i’m not used to doing that. In my eyes we should be 50/50 or he could help out a little more.

We also have two pets that he barely takes care of. I’m stuck cleaning our cat’s litter box (even though i shouldn’t while pregnant) or else it won’t get done.

Coincidence or Retaliation? My MIL Is the CEO and I Just Got Demoted

My MIL is a bitch😂 sorry, just had to start off with that. Okay, now that I got that out 😂 let me give y’all the backstory because I genuinely need to know if I’m being dramatic or if this is as fucked up as it feels.

My MIL is the CEO of the company I work for. My husband also works there, he’s a Coordinator, and I was working as an Administrative Assistant/Peer Support Specialist. My husband and his mom have not been on speaking terms since July. I’m not going to dump the entire family tree on y’all 😂. Just know things between them have been BAD. We were also supposed to go to Thailand with her, but because of the issues between her and my husband, that trip basically got taken away from us. She went without us and came back literally ONE DAY before our gender reveal. She was not invited.

Now, before anybody says, “Well, that’s her son’s mom, how could you not invite her?” there is a LOT more to that situation, and at this point, my husband and I decided we were not going to pretend everything was fine just because it was a family event. We did invite some of our coworkers, though. Fast forward to Tuesday. I get called in and told that I’m being demoted. The reason I was given?

Budget cuts.

Okay… sucks, but whatever. I’m trying to be an adult about it. I’m pregnant, I have bills, and obviously getting demoted is stressful, but if the company is cutting the budget, then I can at least understand that it’s a business decision.

Except…

My husband and like 7 other ppl at the company got promoted the same week!! And then I was supposed to work until Friday in the office, but she sends another coworker of mine to tell me that she wants me gone the same day so my co worker can move in my space. How unprofessional!! Eventually my husband talked to his mom, and suddenly there were apparently MULTIPLE reasons for my demotion that had nothing to do with budget cuts. She allegedly told him that I had said I couldn’t lift certain items because I’m pregnant. NEVER SAID THAT! She brought up paperwork that supposedly wasn’t turned in. NEVER DID THAT! And then there was a customer complaint over the phone. BUT WAS CONFIRMED TO NOT BE ME! It was another employee.

Honestly, the part that bothers me the most isn’t even the demotion itself. It’s the possibility that something personal happening between my husband and his mother could have crossed over into my job. Because if you don’t like your son right now, that’s between y’all. If you’re mad that your son’s wife didn’t invite you to her gender reveal, okay. But my paycheck??? LEAVE MY PAYCHECK OUT OF IT. 😂

Am I in the wrong

Long story short my mother in law lives abroad and has no boundaries will call me 3/4/5 times a day for the past 3 years since my daughter is born. My husband works all day so she calls me. She calls me either really early in the morning , at my babies nap time or after nap time when I’m trying to prepare lunch etc. I’ve explained to her before she needs to stop calling at nap time because then I look like the bi**h for ignoring her calls. If I text her and say sorry my daughter is sleeping right now she will reply that’s ok I want to speak to you but I’m trying to have a 30 min break to myself to shower or eat or clean whatever … She still continues to call and if I don’t answer she will keep answering. Then I get anxiety to find time to call her even if I’m busy or out so that I don’t look bad ignoring her then she will sit on the phone hardly saying anything just repeating my daughters name calling her on the phone and dealing with her customers(she runs her own buisness) all weekend she will be on FaceTime to my husband like 5 times a day and on holiday etc. A couple days ago she called during nap time and I didn’t answer I’ve been really exhausted lately. She seems to think because I’m a stay at home mum that I just sit around relaxing all day. Anyways I went about my day and after nap time and getting my housework done I went for a coffee with my daughter and my husband met us after work. We are all happy enjoying our coffee date and his mom is already on the phone and turns around to me and goes “I’ve called you three times today why havnt you answered” I explained to her that I’ve been super tired . I felt like she done it to shine a light on me and put me on the spot and bait me out to my husband. After the call I said to my husband she has no right to question me and I don’t have to explain myself to her and who is she to question me. His answer is always “you know how she is” but I felt like she done it maliciously to cause trouble with my husband and I and I didn’t like it. Anyways he got really mad o said she has no right to question me and we have had these arguments before she has no understanding of personal space or normal boundaries. My husband got really mad I said “who is she to question me” and hasn’t spoke to me for 4 days. Which is really extreme we never ever go this long without squashing and argument the hour later. He said I should respect his mum and all this and that. I am really hurt how far he’s taking this and said that whenever he says anything about my family I try to understand his point of view and support him before always jumping in the defensive.
