My 8 month old is stuck on purees and refuses actual food that is mashed up. He gets chocked up and has no interest in playing with the textures and feeding himself… I feel so behind the ball game 😭

My 15m old hasn’t wanted to eat anymore solids most days (& tbh he was never that into it but it was better when he was 9,5-10,5 months at least in days not such bad teething but since the last most painful teeth started coming (he teeths so slow he’s been on the last three teeth since before 11m old) but he’s started spitting stuff out and refusing but demanding constant boob and he doesn’t take a bottle at all & is over 30lbs so it’s kind of rough keeping up with how much milk I’m soooo thirsty & needing to pee more often than I was at 42weeks pregnant plus I worry a lot about his iron & calcium bc of how little he eats even I give him fatty fish & liver mostly tho he’d always rather have veggies and hates a lot of “normal kid food” the spitting also doesn’t have to do with him not liking something also bc he does it with his favourites just as much and he’ll happily eat or spit the same foods just based on if he thinks he can get boob or not 😭

Yup! Seals his mouth shut, turns his head away and won’t even try.
Occasionally puts finger food in his mouth and sucks it.
The only thing he’ll actually eat is Greek yoghurt.
Two months and made no progress 😭

My son didn’t want to transition from purées to more solid food that requires chewing, at first. What helped was seeing other babies eating the teething crackers, which made him jealous, so he tried them, and that was an entry point for starting to chew.

Also, as far as feeding himself, I gave him the spoon to hold from the beginning. At first I held it with him and helped guide it, and pretty soon he could put the spoon in his mouth by himself after I spooned the food onto the spoon. Then he started picking up the food by himself as well. Initially he wouldn’t even try food unless he was holding the spoon.

I didn’t have a problem but I did introduce it in purées — I would crush up puffs into his puree to introduce texture. He’s 8MO and eats any and everything I give him now! Maybe give that a try

My 8 month old is also doing mostly purees. He gags so easily on bigger pieces so we are gradually giving him more and more texture, but still having some episodes. I know he has to learn and gagging is kinda expected but it's frustrating when he vomits up everything he ate 😖 so we try not to push the limits too often. We found he does do really well with mashed potatoes! That's been easy to gradually make more and more chunky and sometimes we use it as a vehicle to give him other foods. Same thing with yogurt. But also he's not feeding himself much so you're not alone!

My first is 2-1/2 years old and has been like this since day 1. We tried baby led weaning with him and he was just not a good candidate for it. Too strong of a gag reflex and not enough food drive. He would eat spoon fed purées but it was a long time before he had any interest in self feeding. I think what finally got him interested was using spoons and forks, something about the dexterity challenge piqued his interest but I don’t think it’s ever been about the food for him. He still doesn’t like eating. My 8 month old couldn’t be more different and I’m relieved to have an eater this time around but it really just goes to show that every kid and every eating journey is different!

I will mash up avocado and or banana in my daughters baby food at first I’d do mash it more but now I leave it chunky for texture sometimes you gotta trick them 🤣

Oh my goodness i am dealing with the same thing, I’m still iffy and hesitant on solids he’s still on purées an he is 8 months today
