I’m 99.9% sure my child may be autistic but my mother keeps saying my daughter isn’t. She shows so many signs though. She’s got limited speech, she doesn’t always respond to her name nor does she always look at us, she flaps her arms or hands, she spins, she walks on her tip toes, she lines toys up and sometimes afterwards she’ll play with them but not always, and she’s showing so many other signs.
Her pediatrician said at her 18 month appointment that she didn’t think my child was autistic but I feel as if my thoughts were dismissed. We’re a military family using tricare prime so I’d have to jump thru hoops to see a different one but I feel like it may be necessary. Any advice or other moms going thru similar?

Wowww I have a May 2024 toddler as well. I'm currently going through the exact same thing with others contradicting my concerns. I got her into early evaluation and had 2 evals done so far and waiting on 2 more! Even if its not autism, I can see that she is behind on so many things and needs extra help. I rather act now than later.

I see you mentioned military family, but do you have an opportunity to bring her to a psychologist? I myself majored in psychology and that seems up the alley for a diagnosis ! I’m not speaking counseling but a pediatric psychologist someone who specializes in this area may be better help for you being able to see the smallest differences!

I had the same issue regarding my daughter. I knew in my gut she was autistic but everyone kept dismissing it. We finally took her to neurologist and they diagnosed her. Since then it has been easier to get help and have insurance cover therapies.

Another option is to see a developmental pediatrician. You shouldn’t need a referral! Good luck! Keep advocating for your child :)

As an autistic person with autistic kids… my mom said it wasn’t autism cuz it’s normal but now I know it’s cuz autism is genetic and what the older generations think is normal is only cuz they don’t know that they themselves are autistic- like my mother and grandmother lol…
And also she is young and there’s still a lot of doctors that aren’t current in their knowledge of how autism presents in afab children (a female at birth) unfortunately
I highly recommend checking out the book Unmasking Autism by Devon Price. Just food for thought 🫶🏻
