Hi everyone - My daughter is 27months old and still doesn’t say more than a handful of words regularly. She mostly just says one syllable or sound of a word. We’ve been doing speech therapy for a little more than 6 months. She is starting to vocalize and at least try more, but still has not really started producing actual words yet. It is getting harder and harder not to stress out about this and worry that something more might be wrong, like I recently started looking into childhood apraxia of speech.
I’m looking for some community of people who have gone through or are going through similar things just to be able to talk to someone about it. Did anyone have a child with a similar profile at this age - how did it go from there for you? Is anyone going through something similar right now and want to chat?
Thanks.

Hey! My daughter didn’t really start talking until she was 2.5yrs - 30 months, and then it was one syllable words. Once she turned 3, or just before, we had language boom! She was learning new words daily and able to use them in sentences… granted the pronunciation wasn’t 100% but she’s got there.
How’s your daughter’s understanding? Does she understand instructions? X

Hi, we have a little boy who is 2 years and 2 months now. We done over 8months of private SLT, with not a massive help to be honest. We got his hearing tested the day after his 2nd birthday - lo and behold he has conductive deafness! He passed his baby hearing test. He has bad multiple chest infections, most needing hospitalisation, since he was born. He always seems to listen and understand instructions, but since the diagnosis we notice him lip reading. We are waiting on emergency grommet surgery for both ears

Hi Jennifer, my son only spoke single words at 2.5 yo and he didn’t have many. There was slow progress until he was around 33 months old and then suddenly boom he was saying 2/3 word sentences. And not he is 37 months old and fully talking and having conversations. My husband and I were really worried for a long time and honestly couldn’t even picture him speaking and now we can’t keep him quiet 🤣 I know it’s annoying to hear it but they really do it in their own time. All the best! ☺️

My husband didn't say any words at all until he was 3. Until that point, he communicated in hand gestures and clicks and squeaks. One day he randomly came out with the word "flower" and then within a week was saying sentences.
As an adult (18) he found out he was dyslexic. He wishes he'd found out sooner as there were things he struggled with and didn't know why. Once he had a diagnosis and support he excelled and got a first class degree.
Obviously I don't have any advice as I wasn't there - but you're already doing the best thing by getting early intervention (my husband wishes he'd had speech therapy sooner as a child). Sending you all the best.

hey, so I started noticing this with my son because I have a lot of friends with kids his age that we’re talking a lot and our pediatrician was telling us that they should have 30 to 40 words by age 1.5/2
We got him an ABA and they haven’t diagnosed him autistic or anything because literally speech is the only thing we’re lacking but highly recommend talking to your pediatrician about this so they can recommend the best option for your child
he has significantly improved since we started therapy back in November and gained almost 20 words within the last four months
