I am confused about what you are asking.

You said you've voiced your opinion then been called racist. Can you give examples. I'm not trying to argue, just trying to understand. Maybe in these cases you guys were discussing something that was tied to a certain culture or that is used to negatively stereotype others and you were unaware of that.

That is not racist it is just that some people eat differently b then others. I don't see what that has to do with race.

@anon, So in the situation you mentioned I can understand the confusion. Lots of cultures its common to eat with you hands. I know in many West African cultures we eat with our hands. Even certain soupy dishes are eaten with hands. I dont think your racist for this opinion. I think this is more of a misunderstanding. Maybe the person you were talking to had had a negative experince with others regarding cultural norms or maybe they are sensitive to certain topics.

In general, I try not to make statements regarding other cultures, especially if I am linking it to something that can be seen as negative to avoid this situation. I dont like confrontation and while overthinking is stressful and annoying, its easier than a confrontation for me.

*I'm not saying you have to change at all. Im just saying that I've been in similar situation over what I think was a misunderstanding, but it was uncomfortable enough for me to change.

No not really, I mean in my opinion white people who say stuff like this about having to filter or walk on eggshells usually are saying it because they indeed have been racist unintentionally and didn’t like the feedback when it was addressed so instead of like thinking about it deeper they’ll do the whole “I guess we just can’t talk about freely cuz people are sensitive” bit. But again, this is from my experience being around other white people my whole life both the outwardly racist kind and the covert or ignorant ones

@anon, I get where you're coming from. I've been in similar situations (more about religion than race) and i just had to remove myself from those conversations. It was hard because I really liked the person for the most part but she wanted to talk about religion A LOT.

One thing I will say, I'm not a religious person. I dont hate religion or think bad about it. However, I also dont know much about religions. So I probably did say things that I THOUGHT were fine but to someone who cares deeply about their faith(and has more knowledge about religions in general) maybe I was offensive.
