Put the tip of your nipple under baby’s nose/top of the lip and wait for them to fully open their mouth, then flip the nipple into their mouth. Try and make sure their chin is up off their chest/ almost looking up towards you so they have plenty of room to drop the jaw to open wide. Lanolin nipple cream is going to be your best friend. Unfortunately it is generally uncomfortable and painful to an extent at the start until your nipples toughen up and get used to their new job. You’re doing great mama!

Koala hold and nipple shields saved me… the start was rough but it gets better! As my baby hit 6 weeks I could take the shields off, it was easier because his mouth was bigger Xx

Nipple shields!! Saw a lactation consultant when she was a week old and they said if it works then use it to get bf established. Then in a month or two you can wean off them although you don’t have to

Silverettes worked for me better than anything else!

My baby had a tongue tie. We started seeing a pediatric/perinatal chiropractor for torticollis and tongue tie. We got his tongue tie snipped around 2-3 weeks.

I used a nipple shield (Munchkin or Momcozy brand) until around 5 weeks when he finally latched on his own.

Nipple butter all day every day with silverettes saved my life. The nipple pain is real, yo. But it does get better, or atleast more bearable. He's now 6 months and I nurse/pump 50/50!

Don't give up, mama! You're doing great! šŸ’š

Also I watched latching help videos on YouTube. One said to flip your nipple up to the roof of their mouth when they open.

And hot showers and warm compresses help with pain! I use a microwavable neck warmer on my chest every night when I go to bed. There are also reusable breast warmers that you can boil to activate and snap into your bra. I think it is the Frida brand.

Reach out to Infant Feeding Team for help with positioning and they can check what's causing the shallow latch too.

Sleep

My LG (2.5) has always been a great sleeper. She still naps during the day, usually for anywhere between 1.5–3 hours, but lately she’s been fighting her naps and they’re getting later and later. But when shes gone, shes sparko!

We’ve had a few days recently where she hasn’t napped at all, and if she’s kept busy, she gets delirious by the end of the day before sleeping from 7pm–6am.

However, if we’re having a quieter day at home or I can’t get out, she might finally nap from 1–3pm. I try not to let her nap that late because it pushes bedtime back to around 10pm, but I also don’t want to keep her awake when she’s clearly exhausted, whinging and in need of sleep.

Does anyone have any tips for gently waking a toddler from a nap so they don’t sleep for so long? Or is it time to drop naps altogether? Alternatively, how can I get her back into the routine of napping from 12–2pm like she used to?

I know she obviously still needs the sleep, but our days are now starting at 5am, and I’m struggling to work out what’s best for her. I'm also aware the clocks go back soon which will fuck me even more. Shes up from 5/6am. She has so much energy and we play from the moment she opens her eyes till bedtime.

For context, I also have a 6-month-old who sleeps amazingly from 8pm–7am. This then means I sort my toddler out and have to wait upstairs until my baby wakes up as transporting her downstairs will wake her unnaturally.

MIL keeps planning to have a sleepover with my EBF 6 month old

She’s too pushy and I’ve said no endless times. It’ll be very stressful for him. I don’t pump because I don’t like it and my baby doesn’t like bottles. I’m currently trying to break nurse-sleep association. It doesn’t make any sense to attempt a sleepover because it’ll be just stressful for baby and I. I just can’t be asked to keep saying NO. It’s almost harassment. I said it’ll eventually happen once I’m back to work, not while I’m in mat leave as I don’t want to be away from my son yet. How can I approach this in a friendly way? She’s just too much sometimes and I’ve been very friendly and open about the idea, but not about the timing.

3 questions mamas!

1) how much sleep are you averaging at the moment? (I’m 3 weeks PP currently and baby is feeding every 3 hours, so getting 3 hours max of uninterrupted sleep)

2) are your babies really noisy and wriggly after night feeds but absolutely fine in the day?! If so, any tips please šŸ™

3) following on from above really, how long does each feed take? Mine is up from about 1.5 hours from each feed so it’s sooo exhausting as she just won’t settled afterwards and is really wriggly/nosiy

Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong as I’m so tired and if the feeds were a bit quicker at night/could get her back down quicker it’d be so much better then I could actually sleep!

Thanks so much 🄰

If you’d had this sleep would you get up or go back to sleep?

9pm - 11:30pm (wee break)
11:30-2:30am (up for feed)
3:30-5:30 (up for feed)

Baby went back down at 6:30
