School and SEND

I know this post may be controversial but I'm looking for open discussion not arguments please. This is not meant to criticise.

I seen this today on FB and as a teacher (over 20 years) I have taught children with varying SEN needs over the years. Some have needed different planning and resources, some 1:1 support, some part in school, part in PRUs.

However, there has been a rise in SEN diagnosis over the years and alongside this huge cuts to support - meaning sometimes you will have numerous pupils who have different needs that clash. In one tiny classroom. Often with little to no support.

I'm curious as to what people think would be the answer(s) ? Obviously, you can't say that every SEN child would be better off in a specialist school as that simply isn't true.

I see many parents of SEN children (influencers on FB) saying school is just not fit for purpose and teachers need to adapt their classroom and teaching for their child. Which is true, and every parents needs to advocate for their child, but with 1 teacher to 30+ children, no lesson or teaching style or technique is ever going to be perfect for all of those every single time. You can do your best to follow the EHCP and implement. So what would you change to ensure inclusion?

Would it be to reduce class sizes? Overhaul the curriculum?
Remove testing?
Flexible timetable?
More adult support (TAs)
More specialist support (e.g learning mentors, child psychologists)
Train teachers more - often we have done a couple of days worth of training on specific needs - if that. Also, I find a lot of the training is about the need , not how to support the child in real life situations like the post details here

I don't know if people know the reality of what schools are like in the UK now. Teachers have been trying to fight these cuts for year and the media just pits us against parents telling them strikes are about pay.

And now some children (and parents) are at more than crisis point because they're not getting the support they need.

UK families - how much is your weekly shopping?

Even better if you can tell me how many people it feeds in your household.
Our food alone is about £90-£100 for a week, but then I go to cheaper shops for cleaning supplies, snacks for the kids, fruit ect and I think that’s where I keep over spending.
But then I do have two toddlers who just eat so so much fruit.

Whos looking after your LOs while in labour?

Just collecting some thoughts! I've only ever had my mum for childcare, and she's travelling when I'm due, so I'm wondering what alternatives people are using for childcare for the existing little ones when you're due your next! We'd book a babysitter but not sure if we could just call a sitter last min when the baby's decided to arrive!

Thank you :)

Meals

I have no idea what I’m supposed to be feeding my 9 month old. I look online and it’s recipes with loads of ingredients and I don’t wanna spend hours in the kitchen when it’ll probably end up on the floor. Any ideas for normal meal ideas

failure

took my child out of nursery, due to the place being absolutely awful and feeling my child wasnt safe there but now im being told to not send my child to any nurseries and wait til starts school when 4, got just under a year. BUT I feel like such a failure of a mother, not providing my child with social interactions and not making friends, family and friends with children dont really both with us either. am I a bad mum for not trying to put my child back into a nursery or should I just wait it out and keep teaching my child myself and get them ready for school?

SAHM and Working husband

Hi just wondering what everyone thinks of this situation I have and if it's normal or not. Since my husband and me married 4+ years ago I have worked for a year and then got pregnant 3 times in a row (planned of course) and for 3+ years already at home. We have split our major responsibilities into him making all the earning and me doing majority of the tasks with the kids and household. My husband never really feels like going out with his friends even though he has very good friends, he always says he prefers to be with me after his work day. His hobbies he also kind of puts aside, he is full of interests, hobbies and skills and he always says that he can't do anything because he "can't set his family behind himself and he never has time etc" which in my opinion is not entirely true, I think if he wanted to, he could make time for these things. So basically all he does is work all day then come home and help me with the rest of the stuff that needs doing and because I don't drive yet he is doing lots of the things that require a car, e.g I send him to buy things, pick things up from somewhere, drive me somewhere where it's inconvenient to get to by public transport etc etc. Me on the other hand, I do lots of things like going out to have a brunch here, going out with our kids to the soft play there, every week I meet my friends and we do something nice together and he drives me and picks me up and is with the kids during it and besides that always goes out of his way to make my life more comfortable by putting himself last.

I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and have a UTI so am in pain and am going to the hospital. My husband's business partner is very upset with him that he took off lots of time from work to help me with things so I told my husytgat it's fine, I will take the bus (1 hour ride) to the hospital with the kids and he shouldn't stretch his business too much and he told me that he still asked his partner about if he can leave work early and be with the kids and that his partner was angry with him. In the end, one hour before I had to leave he wrote me a message that he is on the way to the kids and I can go to the hospital by myself so apparently he fought for the agreement to do it.

It's very nice and I feel very loved but obviously he often complains to me that he does everything for the family and me and that he doesn't have a life of his own and that he feels so stretched etc etc but I feel like most of the times it's him doing it actively to himself. So I feel very taken care of on one hand but very guilty often too because of his complaints sometimes. I don't know what I am supposed to think of that that he argued with his business partner and does an upsetting thing to him like leaving early so that I am more comfortable in hospital. And tomorrow he will bring me to my friends and he always says how happy he is that I go but what should we do about him feeling the way he feels sometimes?
