I have a 3 week old and I am exclusively breastfeeding, I’ve found in the past week or so, he latches on very well to one breast and drinks with no problem but the other breast, he will latch bit detach himself after a bit and I’m having to latch him on several times. When he does detach milk usually sprays everywhere which makes me think it’s the flow that’s quite strong, but has anyone else had this problem before and can offer some advice? Thank you!

I have that problem on my left breast. I have a faster flow on that side. Majority of time I feed him laying on side when at home and If he unlatches on the left side due to the fast flow I put cloth on top for few seconds till it slows down and then he will continue to latch. Maybe try a different position

I had a similar issue, but she just struggled to latch on the right side and would eventually get really fussy. Laying down to feed really fixed the problem, she can even latch in the original position now.

When I had this problem I was told a nipple guard would help, the milk would pool in the guard first then slower through the holes in it maybe that may help you as it won’t spray directly in baby’s mouth

Let the letdown into a muslin first then latch baby. The flow will be easier for him to manage

You can hand express a little bit beforehand to slow the letdown down a bit, reclining when feeding and applying a bit of pressure to the top of the breast (all advice from the feeding team when my let down was super quick in the earlier days)

Some baby’s prefer one side over the other. Not necessarily a flow issue. But rest assured overtime he will become a pro at both sides!

Offer him his non favourite breast first
