I’ve never had many friends growing up and if I did it was always a singular girlfriend. When I went to university I tried to make friends on campus and that was a strange experience. I studied Interior Architecture and those girls were competitive! It was all about who got the internship from the best firm and you bet if you shared ideas in a study group you’d see it on their project the next week. Not quite the friendship I was envisioning…
A few years later, my circumstances changed, I moved, I met my husband, my community broadened and I found a couple of girlfriends that seemed to be really supportive. Until I had a baby.
I’m 25, and none of our other friends have had children yet which is completely fine! I don’t expect anyone to be at the exact same point of life as us, nor do I expect anyone to only want to talk about my child when we get together. I make an active effort to only talk about Lucy- my 6 month old daughter- if asked specifically and only very briefly during initial greetings. Six months in and my friends are cancelling plans on me- plans I desperately was looking forward to- or just not inviting me at all.
My husbands guy friends have been a lot more welcoming and supportive of us and things haven’t changed with them at all, it’s just the girls.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who values time to just be themselves. Not a mum, not a wife, not a daughter. Just to be a girl with some girlfriends. I also don’t want to feel like I have to tiptoe around topics when my daughter is my whole world at the moment. She’s my priority, my joy, my opportunity to grow as an individual. It just feels like instead of being there for each other no matter what circumstances change in our life, my friends would rather just not join me in this new phase.
Anyway, anyone else experiencing this? And if you are, although girlfriends have always been few and far between for me, I can say that my husband is truly my best friend and I hope that if you’re experiencing a change in support that you at least of someone on your team cheering for you. You deserve it.
If you’re looking for a friend that is happy to be happy for you, support you when you need support and be loyal no matter the timeline please send me a message. I would love to spend time with someone during the week, go on walks, hang out, yap, and just be a girl ☺️

Awww I feel the same. It's hard making new friends especially when becoming a mum. Please send me private chat if you need to vent anytime. Ali from WA Xoxo
