WWYD in this situation? (Trigger as racism)

I come from the gypsy community but married out of it. I would still class myself as a gypsy with my morals, values and the way I hold myself. I’m still in contact with all my family who are English gypsies.

So my husband. I told him what I was from day one and he was fine about it whatever. I’ve recently had a baby and I’m dressing my baby traditionally and buying him jewellery ect and I will raise him speaking our language and hold him to the same values and tradition that I come from.

My husband is now making comments “why is it always from your side” “I’m not raising my child that way” another stupid one is I wanna be called mam but he REFUSES to call me it and calls me mummy or mom.

My husbands family are the same they will use racist remarks and I’ve heard them say “that’s so pikey” which is a racial slur towards us. When I told his family I’ve been looking at jewellery to get him they said “uh isn’t that a bit chavvy? Is that the gypo in you coming out” and I said well yeah he is a gypsy boy and they went to say “yeah HALF HALF”

It’s driving me mad. I want to raise him how I was raised and I told my husband this but now it’s becoming a serious problem in the relationship. I don’t mind him having some “normal” behaviours as his family are already making plans to do with my son in the future (another issue as they think they have so much control over him but didn’t give a shit when I was pregnant) but to me family come before anything and I want my child to be close to both parts of his family not just mine. I don’t see the issue with raising him half and half but it seems to me now that my husband and his family have a massive problem with it to the point where I’m ready to tell them all to fuck off. How can they use racist terms that reflect their own grandchild?????

What would you do? I’ve already said my child is half and they’re still having issues. Me and my husband are still very much inlove and we do get on well he’s nothing but good to me in all other terms this is the only issue that we have.

I just now feel stuck.

I feel like we already have a lot of racism towards us I don’t need it coming from so called family too :)

So tricky sorry to hear this compromise is key and I believe in speaking your mind ?? Xx

That's a hard one tbh. Surely you've already asked them to stop using the word 'pikey' and replace it by gypsy or traveller (if traveller is the right word or one you'd prefer). I am Argentinian and raising my LG speaking Spanish and English and holding Argentinian traditions as well as Scottish ones because obviously she's 50/50 and found nothing but support from my husband's family. I'm sorry you're going through this

If your husband is not defending you then you're in trouble. If y'all were dating I'd tell you to end it. Nothing worse than a man who can't have boundaries between his 2 families. A partner from different background may love you but it's family and friends that you need to watch out for. Because they are his biggest influences. So he needs to put up boundaries and protect you and your son.

This is a very hard situation. And not likely to change with his family honestly. But you should work with your husband to get a compromise for how you guys plan to raise your child. And for him to accept this part of you. Showing and explaining the ways you have compromised in your life, and the cultural practices you aren't following or raising your child in will help. People don't see others' sacrifices and sometimes you have to spell them out for them to see it. He likely had not fully thought through what the cultural differences were and how it was going to look when it came to child rearing. When you guys get on the same page he will need to also protect your guy's peace when it comes to his family and their views/comments on child rearing and what power they seem to think they have over your guys son and your lives.

He needs to have a talk with his family about their language as well. Using racist, hurtful terms is not ok. They can have their views, but they do not need to speak to you in that way.

I'm sorry but in my opinion you and your husband are not very much in love because he doesn't accept or appreciate your heritage. He chooses to use offensive language rather than having a grown up conversation about his preferences when it comes to dressing your child. He doesn't even respect your right to choose what your own child calls you. That's not my idea of love. It's OK for him to not like the style and want compromise, it's not OK for him to approach it the way he has been. I'd also be seriously looking at putting him in the bin. I'm sorry you've been subjected to this sort of thing from his family, they're obviously quite shitty people but the big issue to me is that your husband isn't stopping this behaviour. He should be in your corner 😔

Anyone else had to get creative with feeding?

My son is being so fussy recently. I often have to feed him in creative ways (see photo 😂) because having the bottle in a normal position sometimes makes him upset. Anyone else experiencing this?

Would you let your 2.5 play on their own in their room?

We just got back from a holiday where she spent some time playing with other children in our extended family (3&5 year old) in their bedroom with less adult supervision. I was on edge the whole time because I thought she was too young to be playing without an adult there, so I stayed at the bottom of the stairs and checked in frequently.

However, she showed me that she could be well behaved, independent and safe when I’m not there and she played amazingly and never took it to a place where I needed to intervene.

Coming home, she’s wanted to go upstairs a lot more in her room and I’m wondering other people’s thoughts on letting her spend some time alone in her room playing. Obviously risk assessments have been made, she had a camera in her room so I could watch her & there is a gate at the top of the stairs.

She’s already extremely independent and I trust her a lot (as much as you can trust a 2 year old anyway🤣) and she listens to instructions very well.

Anyway, let me know what you’re thoughts are please🤍

If your toddler is fed dinner at nursery or childminder, do you offer a second dinner when they get home?

My son eats at 4:30 at nursery, he’s not usually hungry for dinner at home but 4:30 to morning is too long

Potty training 3 year old

Just started our potty training journey with my little boy. 1st day at home no nappy just naked, potty in the living room and downstairs toilet has a seat and step for him. Must say first day only a couple accidents and using the potty for wee’s and toilet once for a wee. On the second day and we’re doing everything the same, but I notice him saying ‘do bum’ which means he wants a nappy on and I think it’s because he needs a poo & is holding it in. He does sometimes likes to hide when he does a poo when he had a nappy on! What can we do to help encourage him to poo on the potty or toilet? Appreciate it is only his second day and I’m so pleased with how he’s taken to it already, any ideas or advice would be brilliant 😋
