Can someone help explain government funded nursery hours to me?
I know you’re entitled to 30 free hours from when the child turns 9 months, but can apply from 23 weeks. I’ve just tried to apply as mine are 23 weeks, but due to me not being due back at work until February i’m not allowed to apply just yet?
Why does it say from 23 weeks then if i’m not allowed yet?

The funding starts from the term after they turn 9 months. So although you can apply from 23 weeks, you don’t actually need the funding yet. My little girl goes to nursery in October, so I’ve done the application as far as possible so far, but it’s pending, as I’m on parental leave. I will then be able to apply and get funding as of January ‘27. I will need to apply and get the code to the nursery by end of November ‘26 though.
The 23 weeks will be effective for those who need it at that point and need to get their codes to their nursery prior to the term starting - if the nursery don’t have the code in time, they can’t process everything from their side and you might not get the funding.

If you’re not back to work until Jan/ Feb then you can’t apply until 1st September - same as me - https://www.gov.uk/free-childcare-if-working/when-to-apply
