My son is nearly two, and I’ve found myself feeling rather saddened by something I’ve noticed recently.
Whenever we’re somewhere with other children, whether it’s the park, a playground, soft play or anywhere similar, he toddles over to them with such enthusiasm, only for them to wander off. I do appreciate that they’re all still very young and that this is simply how toddlers often interact, but it seems to happen so consistently that I can’t help wondering whether he’s beginning to notice.
Perhaps I’m projecting, as I experienced quite a lot of rejection myself as a child, so I’m very conscious that I may be viewing things through that lens. Even so, it’s difficult not to feel rather heartbroken watching it happen time and again.
He’s our first, so he doesn’t have any siblings, and we don’t have any family nearby. I’m a stay at home mum, so he isn’t at nursery either.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Is this simply a perfectly normal phase at this age, or are there things we could be doing to help him build friendships and confidence with other children?

My baby is only 6 months. But this would make me cry

I went to a cousins 5th party the weekend, and I found that as they were that bit older they weren’t interested with the younger ones. One kept telling her she wasn’t allowed in the garden play house and I had to go over and tell them that she’s fine to go in.
I’m not sure how old the kids are you are referring to but even my friends little girl who’s just turned 2 - they don’t really play together they’re just independently play next to each other.
I don’t think they notice at this age either, I believe it’s normal tbh - but with more exposure to other kids 100% builds more confidence IMO xx

Oh bless, that sounds so sad! My boy is only 3 so still really early in forming friendships but his nursery have said it's good for him to learn phrases like "can I play with you" "would you like to play with me" I still find it hit and miss with children we don't know though whether or not they'll want to play with him.
