In this instance, it’s a potty. A woman I know basically forced it on me. Her kid ended up preferring to go straight in the toilet, but my child struggled with learning to use the potty. We had our own, but she insisted we take hers “you’ll do it in 2 days with this,” and left it at our house.
My child is finally getting the hang of it (took much longer than two days lol) and has weirdly taken to gifted potty and has covered it in stickers so we can’t easily give it back and get a new one, my kid will know the difference and it will be a big deal. I’ve started trying to wean away from the potty onto the toilet.
She hasn’t demanded it back yet but last two times I’ve seen her, she’s hinted she wants it back cause of an issue her kid is having now with the toilet.
I’d happily give it back if we didn’t use it, but I’m worried giving it back will be a whole ordeal for my kid.

We don’t take gifts back. That’s a moral code.

I'd keep it until she specifically asks for it back. I'd probably offer to buy her another one instead of giving the one we're using back.

She can buy a new one if she needs it. it was gifted to you and they’re like $20. She shouldn’t have given it away if she needs it that bad

This is so weird. I guess for me, if she "hinted" at it or I felt that she did id just ask something like "hey, it feels like you may want the toilet back, but definitely correct me if im wrong." And this waybshe can say oh omg no or "yes, i do" and if its the yes I do then "when we are done using the GIFT you gave us I am happy to gift it back to you." And it shouldn't be weird. If its a thing then me, personally, im giving the stupid toilet back and buying our own and a pack of cool stickers for my kid to decorate. In the future though, I'd not accept any hand me downs from her at all.
