Disciplining your child

So there’s been a few posts about spanking recently. I DO NOT want this to become a discussion on the merits of spanking nor vilifying people who do spank.

For the record I am against spanking. But then other people are saying that time outs and removal of toys etc are bad too.

How do you discipline your child to encourage a secure attachment, good emotional regulation, and robust nervous system development in your child?

I cannot recommend the book hunt gather parent enough.

Connection before correction is one of the core ideas behind gentle parenting. Understand where they are coming from, settle your own emotions, and give age appropriate feedback.

I think it highly depends on age. Kids normally just need understanding, for now my girl is too young so i just redirect but as she grows I plan to go more into explaining, understanding, and natural consequences

I just thought of me and my siblings. While time outside worked for my brother...... I actually enjoyed them. So I normally got spanked lol. The point is no child is the same. Also no problem is the same. If I take something away or even spank him..... I make sure to talk to him. Mine is 15 now so in my house you hear "you better drop that or I will take you out back and we will go 9 rounds. He is 6 2 much larger than I am and he still backs down lol. Just the threat is enough lol. Punishments suck but unfortunately are necessary. Dont do it out of anger and then make sure you talk it out is my best advice. (My brother screamed blo*dy redrum whenever he was put in time out, the funniest stuff ever I swear lol)

I think secure attachments develop from day 1, and it's more than just how you respond when they're behaving in an unfavorable way.

Bonding and connection is number 1. When I'm not connecting with my child, we have a disconnect. I don't understand what she needs, she doesn't know how to convey it to me, and we're both frustrated.

I also continuously have to regulate my own self first. I wake up much earlier than her, make sure I have a clear plan for our day, and make sure all basic needs are met. When both of us are searching for direction on an empty stomach, it's just chaos.

I've also started implementing ways to call our nervous systems together. I'm going off on a tangent if I continue, but that's what helps us

I work in a nursery and until around 3/4 there is no “discipline” if they do something unkind to a friend we ask them to check on their friend and if they do not then they aren’t forced to. Because children simply don’t have the understanding at this age. There’s a book series called hands are not for hitting etc which covers a lot of unkind actions. We mainly move them away and give them some other activity to do.
if they aren’t co-operating then we slow down and do some deep breathing “blow the candle” exercises etc, or verbalise saying “you can do this or I will do it for you, you choose” sort of statements.
I don’t really feel like there is any particular behaviour of a young child that warrants any kind of specific discipline

I don't feel like I ever have to discipline my kids because I recognize they are children who are still learning. I redirect often. If something goes against a spoken expectation or rule, I remove it. I.e. "we don't throw baseballs in the house" it gets thrown. Baseball is now taken away. I also am a huge believer in natural consequences, obviously within safe measures and explained "I asked you not to do that.. this is why I said that" My kids have different temperaments but I don't feel they have ever been hard. Toddler years were rough, but that's different. Our biggest consistent issue is them either not cleaning up after themselves and thinking the expectation is mean 😂 or not doing something within the time frame asked. All teachable moments so ❤️

I think if you are only using time out and taking away then maybe that would be an issue. Should work more on emotional regulation and logical consequences and replacement behaviors ect.

But I think an occasional time out is fine personally

Conscious discipline and the Good Inside approach both use firm boundaries and unconditional positive regard, and are rooted in neuroscience and developmental psychology.

Discipline means to teach, not to punish, and the goal is fostering cooperation not coercion/obedience. It’s achieved through teaching/modelling emotional regulation, self-awareness, and providing children with the opportunity to fail/problem-solve, and sit in/process their feelings, with you as a stable guide.

It’s a marathon and not a sprint. Spanking, time outs, removing toys, and other punitive punishments might be effective short term, but they result in kids and adults who are anxious, self-loathing, untrusting, and don’t know how to self-regulate or make good decisions.

Am I being unreasonable?

We are due our second baby in October and I’ve asked my husband if he could take over the finance planning and meal planning and LO’s birthday and Christmas presents for November and December. He said no, saying am purposely setting him up for failure. He said that apparently am only doing this because i usually start Christmas and birthday shopping during the summer holidays and because I haven’t done that, am setting him up. I was originally planning on starting all the birthday and Christmas shopping during the school holidays but unfortunately my dad passed away unexpectedly at the end of June and it completely threw me off everything and my whole life has been turned upside down. Not once since my dad passed away has my husband offered to take the load off me like meal planning or finance management, he literally came to me 4 days after my dad passed away and was asking me what’s the finances was looking like so he had a few stuff he wanted to order so I had to look into that for him. I’m currently under my prenatal mental health team because since my dad passed, my mental health has declined to the point where my midwife is having weekly conversations with me about potentially going on antidepressants to manage with everything! Since my dad passed I haven’t done anything to get ready for the new baby and I’ve constantly asked my husband for help with sorting baby stuff out and it feels like am in this alone. I’m 31 weeks and nothing has been done so panic is settling in. All am asking is that he takes over those things for November and December so I can just breathe and get a break for a bit from the mental load. I will still be doing the day to day stuff like cleaning and keeping on top of everything but he hears that as me saying I won’t be anything for 2 months and just lazy around… which is far from the truth. My house is always clean, even when am unwell or has been traveling…I always make sure everything is in order and I would still have a newborn and a toddler to entertain and feed but in his mind, I’m gonna so absolutely nothing for 2 months and that am purposely setting him up for failure! I’ve already decided to do the finances stuff til October just so I can make sure all the baby stuff is sorted in time. I feel so overwhelmed at the moment and I just want to be able to shut off from this stuff just a bit so I can breathe and be present for my little ones. His mum has been absolutely amazing at helping me and supporting me through this season but she has her own life and can’t just keep dropping everything to come help me. I feel so lost and guilty for speaking up for myself because of his reaction to me asking him to help me for 2 months with the finances, meal planning, birthday and Christmas stuff!

So sad

For 5 years I have kept my son’s hospital band and umbilical cord in a zip lock as a keepsake. I always kept it inside of his drawer however I just had my baby girl and they share a room together so I cleared one dresser out two months ago now and it’s been on my mind to put them into keep safe boxes. I did find my baby girls umbilical cord and hospital band but now I can’t find my sons. I’m scared that I have thrown it out. I don’t know how to feel. I am crying because I don’t want him to feel like I didn’t care about his even though that’s not the case and now I feel like I don’t even want to keep hers … i know this isn’t a “big deal” but I feel like a shitty mom.

Anyone got any remedies for teething? I’ve tried a few things but nothing seems to work for her

Using Ashton and parsons powder but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything for her 🫥

Can my 6 month old baby have these Quaker Oats sachets with milk?

My baby turned 6 month old today but can’t sit up independently yet only with support. The health visitor said he can start purées such as porridge oats. Are these Quaker Oats ok?
