I had an interesting conversation with a mum a few days ago and she doesn’t believe in sleep regressions. She has 4 children. Her point was a high majority of babies are just bad sleepers, so is it really possible to regress?
She believes they go through phases of development and learning, yes, but doesn’t think ‘regressing’ is a thing in babies.
Do you think she’s making sense? I’d love to hear people’s thoughts.

So the only “regression” that is backed by evidence is the 4 months regression, where babies sleep cycles permanently change to a more adult like sleep cycle. All other “regressions” are not evidence based! Ages that “regressions” happen tend to happen around the same time as a decrease in sleep needs or nap drops!
Whenever a little one is going through a period of development, separation anxiety, weaning etc then sleep can be affected too!
Also regression is a strange term for it - it suggests that something has being forgotten or that babies are moving backwards but actually that’s not the case at all! Sleep isn’t linear and changes constantly!

I think “sleep regression” is just labelled wrong in general.
What you described that she said, is what the regressions are; development phases.
