Advice for stepmoms becoming bio moms?

Hi there I have a nearly 10 yr old stepdaughter who I have a great relationship with and she is anxiously awaiting her baby sister’s arrival any day now with her dad and I. Looking for any advice from mamas in a similar boat for how you navigate postpartum with occasional feelings of irritability and overwhelm from a stepchild who is used to being the center of attention and the only child/grandchild on both sides of the families? I am anticipating needing help often from her dad but don’t want her to feel neglected and also not interested in her trying to reach in and do too much with a newborn right out the gate being frequently sick and inexperienced with little ones. How to balance all this and not have her resent how this all changes her life?

Involved her with helping with the baby. I just had a baby 3 weeks ago. I have an adopted 9 year old and my step son is 6. We were scared for the 6 year old because he’s always been the baby and started acting out before baby got here. He’s doing amazing now. He loves holding him and feeding him.

Yea I would try to involve her with the baby as well. That’s her sibling and if she’s given the chance to fall in love with new baby she’s gonna start acting like the big sister 🙂🥰

Hi!! How often do you have your bonus daughter? My bonus son was so excited to have another younger sister (his mom had another child a few years before) but he was weary of losing his only child status with us. I think the hardest part for me was navigating postpartum for the first time with a child already in the picture. He was 6 at the time, and required a little more from both of us than he does now that he’s older and we have another on the way, but it still wasn’t easy. Just be patient with yourself, mama. And with her. Take time with both kiddos but be sure to also take your time with just your baby too. If dad takes the oldest out for a bit so you can just be a new mom, etc. Bonus babies can and should always be included but don’t stretch yourself so thin either! We had rules when she was a newborn to avoid sickness and everything, just explain before baby is here and reiterate after. Let her hang with grandparents for a day so you and dad can do things with your newborn.

My stepdaughter is 9, and she has done absolutely amazing with her baby brother who was my first bio baby. My biggest advice is to include her whenever you can and make her feel like she’s an important part of this new chapter, while also making sure to carve out special one-on-one time with her some days too. We were also really honest from the beginning about what having a new baby would look like and how things might change. Kids are so much more understanding and adaptable than we sometimes give them credit for! I feel so blessed with my stepdaughter she has become the sweetest big sister and is genuinely so helpful with her litter brother and he is obsessed with her they are already best friends….. for now 😂

My heart goes out to you! When my stepdaughter came into my life at 9, her dad had been gone to Iraq for most of her life and only had her on weekends after his divorce, and her her bio-mom ended up in jail and rehab. Stepping into that mom role overnight was so overwhelming.
Here is what helped us navigate the shift when our baby arrived:
Protect one-on-one time: Give her a few minutes of daily focus so she knows your bond is secure.
Set gentle boundaries: Keep her hands-off if she's sick or doing too much, and redirect her into safe big-sister tasks.
Lean on dad: Have him take her on special individual outings.
Reassure her: Remind her that love isn't finite when she acts out.
Hang in there, mama. You’ve got this! ❤️

I would say listen to ur instincts. and ur partner needs to help u with these feelings. Hes supposed to help resolve some of these issues u need to listen to him too

I'm not a stepmother, but as for postpartum I think it would be similar for any child. Set clear boundaries. I have a 6 year old that likes to think she is also the mommy to my 6 month old. Try to prepare as much as possible give yourself grace and allow everyone to feel how they feel. I think it's important to try to carve out time. We would take my kids out separately for one on one time whenever we found time

Not a stepmom, but I grew up in a multi-child household. It's very important to spend one-on-one time when you can. Keep special things and inside jokes that are just for you too. Example: If you always go for a treat after school, keep making time for that. If you dance to a certain song to change the mood, that is your and her song, not to be shared with the new baby. Just make sure there is space for her in your words and actions. Like if you promised to do something with her, write it down, put it in your calendar. Never assume she'll just forget she asked for something or to do something, if she doesn't bring it up, she is testing to see if she still matters by YOU remembering.
Yes, allow her to be involved, but never responsible (parentifying is not the goal) sibling bonding.

How do you poo? Serious question

Im at sahm with a 19 month old who cosleeps naps and bedtime. So i literally never without her. I can't do anything in peace which has now resulted in constipation because the girl never gives me a break and whenever I need a poo she decides to have a meltdown so hence the constipation. She won't independently play and even TV doesn't captivate her. Help!

Getting out

Any tips on just getting out more with the baby? She is 3 months old and fights her naps terribly, so once she’s tired she will just scream and in the house I have to stand and rock her so I worry about going out because she will scream in the car and when out in public but I’m going crazy being in the house or just wandering around the streets. It’s really starting to affect me 😢

How to approach advice

Hi mummas, I’m just wondering if anyone else feels this way since becoming a mum.

How do you feel when it comes to receiving advice from family, friends or other people about your baby and the way you parent?

I completely understand that most people mean well, and sometimes advice can genuinely be helpful. But I’ve noticed that when I’m constantly being told what I should or shouldn’t be doing, or hearing things like “you should do this,” “try this,” or “I used to do it this way,” I can start to feel really frustrated and overwhelmed.

Sometimes I don’t necessarily want advice—I just want to be able to talk about something without feeling like I need to change what I’m doing. I also feel like constantly hearing other people’s opinions can sometimes make you second-guess yourself as a mum, even when you were originally confident in your own decision.

I’m curious whether other mums feel the same way. Do you usually appreciate advice and take it on board, or do you sometimes find yourself becoming frustrated by it? Have you found that becoming a mum has made you want more space to figure things out for yourself and trust your own instincts?

No judgement either way—I’d genuinely love to hear how other mums feel about this.

Sleep!

Anyone any tips for preventing this? He’s just turned 4 months and keeps rolling to his side in his sleep and walking up really unsettled, I try put him on his back and he just goes straight back over, I’m obviously worried about suffocation if he can’t one day manage to get himself back on his back

Lightweight stroller

Super undecided between Joolz Aer2 and Bugaboo Butterfly 2 as our travel/lightweight stroller. I prefer the reclining system on the Butterfly but love how lighter and more compact the Joolz is when folded.

What’s your take?
