Been starving my baby 😭

Currently in hospital staying overnight in the children's ward because my daughter born on Monday had her 3 day check yesterday and she's lost 15% of her body weight 😭

With my son i had to express for 8 weeks due to flat nipples so I totally expected that this time too but for her first feed she latched perfectly and pulled them right out doing a full 15 minute feed! She struggled a bit more in the later hospital feeds but I was told its just likely due to tiredness from birth.

Midwife came on Wednesday and I asked if I should maybe add some bottles cause i feel like baby cant be getting much milk because shes very on and off doing very short feeds and she cries a lot and they said its normal and just sounds like cluster feeding and I shouldn't be expressing or adding bottle before 3 weeks plus since shes having wet and dirty nappies shes fine.

But then when another midwife came Thursday they weighed her and said she'd gone from 8lb 10oz at birth down to 7lb 6oz and they watched her feed and said I needed to give her a bottle immediately then called paediatrics who asked for me to bring her in...

They did a blood test and it came bad that her sodium and potassium levels were really bad and she needs to be admitted and I have to express at least 60ml every 2 hours for her to be bottle fed with.

I feel awful about it and I'm so worried about her, feeling guilty that my sons at home worried about us both, I'm worried about how to handle feeding back home too. I started off saying I dont mind expressing cause I did for my son and then when he was 8 weeks old we just switched to breastfeeding when he was stronger no issue and the staff were all really surprised saying thats super unusual and if im switching to expressing and giving bottles for several weeks they can't see me being able to go back to breastfeeding as babies typically develop a preference for how much easier the bottles are. I had no issue switching my my son like I said so its blown my mind!

Of course id rather she was fed but still now im worried we wont be able to switch back and I just feel so panicked about so many things rn...

My girl lost 10.29% of her birth weight when I was trying to breastfeed in those first few days. It was also agreed that I would express 50ml and feed her after each BF session to get her weight up which was a lot to be triple feeding in the night! I completely relate to the guilt and also confusion from the advice from all the different teams and midwives.

I wish I’d have introduced formula sooner during those first few days, my actual community midwife said it’s fine and don’t worry about the bottle/nipple confusion. You’re having to introduce expressed milk via bottle anyway so we just did top ups using the same bottle as the expressed. As for going back to BF once birth weight is up, we decided latching on directly wasn’t for us as I needed nipple shields etc and was generally such a faff, but she will still go on if I was to offer it, it’s just that expressing is working well for us instead!

I know it’s hard but don’t be too hard on yourself, you’re doing well!! Good luck x

My son lost 13% and it is really soul destroying. He had a tongue tie, which was snipped at day 10 but he had a short tongue and still struggled. From the day 5 weigh, I used nipple shields which helped him to latch. Initially, when we were on the feeding plan, we cup fed him expressed milk because I was so worried about him relatching but gave in a bottle quite quickly as it was so messy!

We carried on with the triple feeding until he was back to birth weight which was so hard, breastfeeding then pumping and then giving a bottle but persevered with exclusive breast milk because I had my husbands support. We were discharged from midwives about week 3 and we just dropped the top up feeds slowly.
Truly, nipple shields were the game changer for us. I used them until I could wean him off at 4 months but they just helped his latch. I found a breastfeeding group that massively helped and were supportive of this.
You are doing amazing and do not be hard on yourself. You’ve got this xxx

Needing Advice

How did you get through newborn times and being alone? My postpartum anxiety has been crazy and when my baby cries I get so overwhelmed rn. In a week I am going to be alone as a SAHM and am feeling so nervous and unprepared for what’s to come. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also if any of you are pumping moms, how do you pump while caring for baby?

Sleep regression

Hi has anyone got any tips of making their babies sleep past 5am? Currently breastfeeding my 14 week old, we do the whole bath, feed and bed routine.
He has his bath around 8pm, and usually fed and asleep by 8:45/9pm - in his next to me.
After this he wakes up at 1am for a feed and will go back to sleep but it takes around an hour to settle him back down again in his next to me. He then wakes up again at 4, will fall asleep on me and then wakes up again from 5am, and just refuses to go back to sleep.

My partner has left us so I’m currently doing it all on my own, any advice would be great fully appreciated, just need abit more sleep!
