My lil one will start childminder next week in the UK. its our first, i have found this childminder in tiney app uk and I was just bothered why do I need to pay for baking ingredients for their cooking activities, art and craft materials for messy play such as cornflour play dough, glitter, glue and specialise learning resources, also personal care such as tissues, handsoaps, anti bac wipes, spray to keep the place clean, gloves and raw materials for activities classed as non food consumables. These are all business running cost and illegal top up fees as per uk government guidelines.
However im a bit hesitant to reply to her email as I would just point it all out and it would create a wall in between us even before the session started. I don't want her to treat my child differently because of these. Husband said we would just pay £1 ( per day) rather than creating misunderstanding. Also it would be too late to back off now and my son would need to wait for placement if we decide to not continue with her. What would you do in this? I really don't know. Please share insights.

Maybe try a different child minder if your not happy to pay consumables? Some will let you supply you own personal care items too so you could ask about that if your not happy to pay for them!

I don't think it's illegal, most childcare providers do it because the government doesn't actually cover their costs. £1 a day sounds perfectly reasonable. Ours is £20 a day.
It's our first. Never had experience with childminder nor nursery. As i looked into government website in the UK, I understand that voluntary charges can apply to things such as food/snacks and sun cream, and I am happy to provide my child's food/snacks and sun cream myself. My child will most likely be staying 3 hours per session.
However, I noticed that the local Council guidance states that providers cannot charge parents for materials necessary for the effective delivery of childcare, including craft materials and learning resources, or for business running costs including cleaning materials. I will however write the council for clarification as it is in conflict with the guidance stated.

I’ve never been charged for anything extra. My child used to go to a nursery and now goes to a childminder, and it’s all been covered by the funding in place.

It may be more difficult to get last minute childcare but not impossible. Both my child’s placements were last minute and were relatively simple to arrange. So maybe look around and see if you can find another option you’d be happy with.
Exactly. Also government guidance states
A1.38 Local authorities must take all steps available to ensure that the free entitlements are available free of charge and therefore that providers do not charge parents for the following in connection with the entitlement hours:
• top-up fees (any difference between a provider's normal charge to parents and the funding they receive from the local authority to deliver free places)
• the supply of or use of any materials. including, but not limited to, craft materials, crayons, paper, books instruments, toys, or other equipment or learning resources that are necessary for the effective delivery of childcare
• business running costs, including, but not limited to, rent, mortgage payments staff wages, cleaning materials, disposal of waste materials, insurance, or utility bills such as energy, gas or water.
I will however wait what the local Council would say about this

Did you not know this when you signed him up? It's normal to ask for consumables.
Also you're very pushy, this is a parenting app not a legal local (wherever that is) helpline. You posted a day ago and in less time you're here accusing people not helping you.

Both my boys go to a childminder and we pay £10 per child per week for little things like that, wipes/tissues ect and to take them out for any passes they need to visit
Yes, I have already asked my childminder about the charges. She told me that she would explain everything in detail in the contract. I was already aware that there could be charges for food, nappies and wipes those are actually the things I specifically made sure to ask about. What I wasn’t told about was craft materials or other learning materials that may be needed as part of providing the childcare and learning.
That is exactly why I asked the question here. I wasn't saying that childminders never ask parents for consumables, and I wasn't expecting this group to be a legal helpline. I was asking other parents about their experiences and trying to understand what is and isn't covered when childcare hours are government funded.

I pay £5 a day consumables.
I'm just needing to vent honestly as I've had such a shitty morning.
My son finishes nursery at 11:45am every day, but they like parents to pick up between 11:35-40. I am there to pick him up on time every single day without.
I also have a baby, who I need to take with me to pick up.
Today as I was leaving I was literally picking her up to put her in the the pram and she done a massive poo. I quickly put her down on her mat and changed her, and then left. It took me a few minutes but I still managed to arrive for 11:45. I know this is technically 'late' for their preferred pick up times but I figured they'd understand a few minutes.
I buzz to get in and as the lady opens the door for me I go to apologise for being a few minutes late but before I even get a chance to get a word out she says "can I just remind you pick up time is 11:40" in such a horrible tone, talking to me like a child. I says sorry and explained it was just typical baby had a dirty nappy as I was trying to leave trying to lighten the mood a little. She then goes on to tell me that all the children who stay til 3 have their lunch at 11:45, so I need to make sure I'm here at 11:40, because now my son is crying because he was told he isn't getting lunch with the other kids. She was laying it on really thick that my son was upset and it was my fault because I was late. She repeated like 3 times that he was *really* upset. I was stood there feeling so small and guilty and thinking wow well you've just spent at least 3 minutes here explaining how bad it is that I was late, turning 5 minutes into 8 minutes but okay... I apologised.
Then she goes to fetch my son, and he comes out smiling and runs over to me for a cuddle. She then comes over with a tissue and starts going on again like "aw he was so upset" and wiping his face even though he wasn't crying? She was like "see I told you mummy was coming" and then she turned back to me and says "I had to keep telling him mummy will be here in 2 minutes, she'll be here in a few minutes, she's just coming" like I'm sorry but I was 5 MINUTES LATE.
I know I was wrong for being late. I apologised several times. I would understand her tone if maybe I was late all the time but I'm never late. Ever. I just left feeling so guilty and embarrassed and needed to vent😔

I think my 2 year old son was just tired today but he was rolling around, throwing things, running off and it became so stressful that I just left the group.
Felt like quite a bad parent even though he's usually fine and enjoys it.

It's food that he has asked for, so it's not like he doesn't like it, and I don't think he has an eating disorder as he'll sometimes eat quite a lot. He is very skinny though.
Sometimes he'll lie and say he ate it, then I find it in the bin (I can't be there for when he's eating breakfast).
I think he's more than old enough to sort out his own breakfast, but I know that he just won't do it. There's lots of food in the cupboard but he just won't bother. He sometimes doesn't eat his packed lunch either, but will then raid the cupboards when he gets home.
I can't afford to keep wasting food but I want him to be healthy. What would you do?

Hey guys!
My baby girl is 6 months on the 17th and we’re thinking of starting giving her food. We’re not sure how to start, if to do purées or just give her sticks (carrots, peppers etc)
Thank you for advice!
