Who are the psychos out here giving their 7 year olds cell phones??

My daughter has told me a few times now since starting 2nd grade that some of her classmates have cell phones and now she wants one 🫩🫩🫩 obviously she’s not going to get one lmao, but the fact that this is already a thing and convo I’m having now is mind blowing to me, I thought I’d have a few more years

That’s crazy my son’s not getting a phone until he’s 16. Hell he can have one of those phones that have two buttons home and 911 🤣

Like a smart phone?

Do they catch the bus to school?

I honestly think some people give their elementary aged children phones instead of a tablet because they think it’s a ā€œsafetyā€ thing with them having the phone at school, but then they can watch shows or play games on it too. Like they think it’s a win-win šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

Although lots of school districts are really leaning into no phone policies now anyway, so that argument often has even less merit.

My 11 year old doesn't even have a cellphone.

My daughter is 6 and two of them in her class have their own phones. Like on TikTok at night instead of going to sleep. Their parents are dumb as fuck, and that’s me being kind.

My kids get a phone when they get to Kindergarden, this world crazy but I have rules šŸ‘šŸ‘

My kids are 14,10 and I have 3 under 3. NONE OF THEM HAVE PHONES. Zero. Now, we homeschool, so our lives are a little different with not attending public school. But we are old school, and no phones. They bought a landline and pay for it with their allowance. So they still have access to their friends, and such, but not on a cell phone. Call me old, but idc.

i gave my small child a phone with life360 on it and also taught them how to dial 911 or call emergency contacts.

i think the grooming comments and anything else in that vocabulary is weird. Just monitor their phones and there’s apps that blocked certain features for them to be able to do that.

how about instead of judging we be more hands on guys lol.

I don’t know about the parental controls and stuff. But I’d be okay with a heavily restricted non internet kind of phone whenever they start going to activities or school practices without me

My 11 year old has a phone and she’s had one since like 6. But at 6 it was mainly games and Life360 (spent a lot of time with her grandpa) and now she’s 11 she has games, Life360 and a few approved friends from schools numbers. And I monitor her phone like crazy and she’s so innocent like if a random number calls or texts her she brings it to me immediately

Most of my kids class. My 9 year old has a Bark watch. That’s it.

I got one with no internet access around 11 yrs old so I could call my mom after practice but that’s really it and I’ll probably be the same way with my own kiddos if they are in sports if not we can revisit the subject when they r around 13 or so with rules ofc but to talk to friends and cousins etc

Avatar

I would consider giving my kid a phone preteen, but only a dumb phone. I plan to withhold smartphones etc as long as possible, hopefully 16! But who knows how the world will look then

Avatar

My 9 year old is now allowed to walk to school although holding out until she is in year 6 to get one. Want one that tracks and has things like maps on it for high school. We also don’t have a landline at home although she can text us on her iPad. My son got one age 11 but he spent an hour going to school on transport.

I feel like there’s so many better options than a regular cellphone if the concern is seeing their location and emergency contacting.. like they make dummy phones and watches for kids for that reason and they’re often cheaper so I just feel like getting your young child that’s still in elementary school esp a phone, even if you think you’re doing good with regulation, is insane and sad and kinda bad parenting and I guess that’s the hill I will die on today lol

Avatar

My stepdaughter got one when she was 8/9 and it was the worst thing ever!
We heavily restrict it, but her mother doesn’t.
It’s not even about the dangers of being online, but it just stopped her being a child, being creative. She can’t leave the house with us for a walk without her phone, she is very very attached to that thing.
For my children they might get one at 11 when they start walking to school, but it’s going to be a flip phone, just enough to call us in case of emergency, but no internet access or games etc on it.

Had to deal with this last week with my kindergartner šŸ˜’ I don’t sugar coat things. I straight up told both of my kids that bad people have access to phones and you’re both too young to understand how bad they can be. My job is to protect you and I don’t give a shit what other parents give their kids lol.

9 times out of 10 cell phones get abused when taken to school (eg. Kids texting each other, inappropriate use, contacting parents to come pick them up when they get in trouble…). I can’t say I have ever thought a kid needed a phone because I have mine on me (I’m a teacher) and I’ve been close enough to most parents that if there was an issue, I’d be calling or messaging them instantly.

The ones who can't stand the idea of not being able to find and talk to their kid at all times.

The 7 year olds aren't making mud pies and "perfume" out of berries and water anymore. They are on Roblox pretending they are at Disney land or some shit. Some anti social behavior. Don't want your kid to turn out to be a weirdo like me.

I'm just annoyed, I was late once to nursery pick up and was made to feel so guilty

I'm just needing to vent honestly as I've had such a shitty morning.

My son finishes nursery at 11:45am every day, but they like parents to pick up between 11:35-40. I am there to pick him up on time every single day without.

I also have a baby, who I need to take with me to pick up.

Today as I was leaving I was literally picking her up to put her in the the pram and she done a massive poo. I quickly put her down on her mat and changed her, and then left. It took me a few minutes but I still managed to arrive for 11:45. I know this is technically 'late' for their preferred pick up times but I figured they'd understand a few minutes.

I buzz to get in and as the lady opens the door for me I go to apologise for being a few minutes late but before I even get a chance to get a word out she says "can I just remind you pick up time is 11:40" in such a horrible tone, talking to me like a child. I says sorry and explained it was just typical baby had a dirty nappy as I was trying to leave trying to lighten the mood a little. She then goes on to tell me that all the children who stay til 3 have their lunch at 11:45, so I need to make sure I'm here at 11:40, because now my son is crying because he was told he isn't getting lunch with the other kids. She was laying it on really thick that my son was upset and it was my fault because I was late. She repeated like 3 times that he was *really* upset. I was stood there feeling so small and guilty and thinking wow well you've just spent at least 3 minutes here explaining how bad it is that I was late, turning 5 minutes into 8 minutes but okay... I apologised.

Then she goes to fetch my son, and he comes out smiling and runs over to me for a cuddle. She then comes over with a tissue and starts going on again like "aw he was so upset" and wiping his face even though he wasn't crying? She was like "see I told you mummy was coming" and then she turned back to me and says "I had to keep telling him mummy will be here in 2 minutes, she'll be here in a few minutes, she's just coming" like I'm sorry but I was 5 MINUTES LATE.

I know I was wrong for being late. I apologised several times. I would understand her tone if maybe I was late all the time but I'm never late. Ever. I just left feeling so guilty and embarrassed and needed to ventšŸ˜”

Has anyone ever had to leave a baby and toddler group because of their child's behaviour?

I think my 2 year old son was just tired today but he was rolling around, throwing things, running off and it became so stressful that I just left the group.
Felt like quite a bad parent even though he's usually fine and enjoys it.

21 month old boy out of control 🄲

My almost 2 year old son will not sit still in prams/trolleys/highchairs without tantruming/shouting/crying and I just don’t know how to deal with it.

Yesterday I had a really horrible experience in Tesco where he wasn’t happy sat in the trolley (he was fed, clean, offered toys/dummy) and he spent pretty much the whole time crying, screaming, shouting ā€œupā€, ā€œmummyā€, pulling at my hands, throwing himself back in a tantrum. I felt like everyone was staring at me and judging me. I tried singing and chatting to him at first but that didn’t work so resorted to ignoring it but that made it so much worse. I ended up going to the back of the store where nobody was and just cried.

How do I deal with this behaviour? Any tips?

We spend most days doing very active, fun and engaging activities because he is just so wild and needs to burn the energy haha so it’s not that he’s usually cooped up bored! But it’s got to the point where now I can’t run errands, go shopping, going for coffee/lunch with my mum friends is now my worst nightmare.

He is just on such high energy ALL the time. I see other kids his age sit and have lunch in a restaurant, sit in the pram happily. What am I doing wrong?šŸ˜“

Please tell me leaving them at nursery gets easier

Positive messages only please! I cant afford not to work so not looking for advice on taking him out.

My LO is 10 months and is settling on really well. But I am really not coping well, when we are apart i can only relate the feeling to mourning. Did anyone else feel this deeply and did it ease?

My son is 13 and every day recently, I've put his breakfast on the table for him before school, and he'll either nibble a bit of leave it completely

It's food that he has asked for, so it's not like he doesn't like it, and I don't think he has an eating disorder as he'll sometimes eat quite a lot. He is very skinny though.

Sometimes he'll lie and say he ate it, then I find it in the bin (I can't be there for when he's eating breakfast).

I think he's more than old enough to sort out his own breakfast, but I know that he just won't do it. There's lots of food in the cupboard but he just won't bother. He sometimes doesn't eat his packed lunch either, but will then raid the cupboards when he gets home.

I can't afford to keep wasting food but I want him to be healthy. What would you do?
