My daughter just started reception, it was 2nd choice school as we only moved to area 3 days before term started!
The school only has 110 out of 210 (52%) capacity filled. For reception 2026, there are only 7 kids out of 30 capacity that they merged Y1 and reception. Y1 intake is 22 kids out of 30 capacity.
The stats of declining birth rates don't look good, we live in zone 3 London. Not sure how school can survive but currently daughter is enjoying it due to being a shy person and small class size.
Just got email this morning and got into 1st choice now! Opposite story, they have 90 kids in reception and 3 form entry!

We had a very similar scenario, only difference being that we were offered first choice place 2 weeks after offers were sent out (can only assume we were high up the waiting list). We stuck with the 2nd choice because of the reduction in form entry, meaning more staff to children ratio than usual in the classroom, the hope that potentially that comes with access to more opportunities and a feeling of ‘it feels like it’s meant to be’. We’re London zone 5 and a lot of the schools around us have reduced their intake. From what I’ve been told it’ll be a similar situation for my June 24 baby too.

I live in zone 2 and three schools have shut down in my area in the last year so I would accept the place at 1st choice school because if the current school does get shut down you might find it hard to find a reception place for your daughter
Thanks both. I absolutely agree. I feel sad as been at the 2nd choice school for 2 weeks and she likes it, made friends and even went to a bday party at weekend. But is true..it will close I know it. It is whether it closes in 12 months or 3 years. The maths aren't mathing

I wonder if it’s worth having a frank conversation with the current school and asking if they’ve have plans in place to prevent a closure? My friends daughters new school has come in to partnership with another school in their area and they’re sharing resources and essentially, balancing the books. Some children have transitioned to the other school and they’ve been able to keep both schools open. I think they now have academy status or something similar in the early phases. Her daughter is in reception so she doesn’t know any different and I’m sure this isn’t common but it might be more so now that so many schools are facing closure. Good luck!

Ironically when we lived in zone 5 and had my eldest they had increased the majority of schools from a 60 year entry to a 90 year entry and we didn’t get into any local schools. Maybe it’s more about returning back to normal sizes.
been trying to get a call with headteacher all day. But did some digging and in 2021 they did merge, so share senior resources. And then for 2026 started merging years. And still only 7 kids in reception and just know if that trend continues for 2027..then will be tough conversations around closures ...

I have 3 year old son and 10 months old daughter. Since I have my daughter something has changed in me. I’m always arguing with my partner, always angry and overstimulated. He works 8h a day 5 days a week, he comes home need to rest etc. I take care of both kids most of the time, I wake up at night when my daughter wakes up, I cook , clean and I do literally everything. Don’t get me wrong I’m stay at home mom so this is part of the things I need to do and I’m not moaning about this, but there’s something that just makes me sooo angry and overstimulated. He can rest whenever he wants cause I will always take the kids, when he was ill he could spend the day in bed but when I got ill I still have to run 24/7 and do everything, I can’t go to the shop alone always have to take one kid with me I don’t remember when I had at least few hours off my duty and I feel like even when my partner is working he should help me more at home at least by supporting me mentally. I’ve been really angry and always snapping at him, yesterday he came back home and we were arguing and today same. He said he’s got enough that all I do is shouting and moaning. I feel like he doesn’t understand me anymore and we’re just two different people in parenthood. I really don’t know what to do. He always just says he’s doing everything for our family (we moved to my country and he’s always calling it a sacrifice from his side). I’m just so tired from all of it. On his days off his never up to do anything with me and kids such as going out for a walk etc. it makes me so tired cause I want to give my kids memories and not just sit at home with us all the time but to actually do some fun things and I feel like it’s always me pushing for it. I really feel like not myself lately, my body changed, I don’t want intimacy with my partner cause I’m just sooo tired and he doesn’t understand it. But I think my tiredness is more like mental tiredness instead of physical. Am I being stupid? Sometimes I really dont want to argue but I’m so annoyed that I start arguing🤷♀️I don’t know how to get myself back to be normal. I love my life with kids and I feel super good to be a mom but it’s just the thing with my partner that makes me tired.

How would you navigate my situation?
My brother (and only sibling) wants to fly in from overseas to visit for Christmas, but with my due date being late November, I have some anxiety around a few things.
1. He’s a heavy smoker and even if I ask him not to smoke before he sees baby, he still smells like it. I don’t want our newborn baby smelling or inhaling any of that off his clothing.
2. It’s just awkward - I’m uncomfortable with him staying with us, and my husband and I will restrict guests over Christmas to 30-45 minute visits. It’s really not worth him flying across the world to see us for 30 mins a day, if that.
We don’t plan to restrict our extended family completely, at the same time no one else we know is a heavy smoker and since they live here it won’t matter if they only pop by for a short period of time. My mum is flying in to stay with us to support us postpartum for 1 month.
How is everyone planning to go about Christmas and holiday season? Especially if you have family overseas?

My 2 year old is currently under SALT & neuro-disability team. I also have a newborn.
The newborn seems to be triggering my toddler as she's loud - when she cries/laughs/coo's anything.
My toddler won't sit anywhere near the baby. She will cry everytime the baby makes a noise & everytime I pick her up/feed her.
Because she cannot verbalise why she's upset she'll just moan and whinge, she's always been such a happy kid but the baby seems to have really upset her.
I try get as much quality time with both as I can.
My toddler plays independently and is fine for abit but needs constant stimulation & I don't always have the time due to baby.
My toddler doesn't go to nursery due to concerns I have about local ones but goes to a playgroup once a week with my mum & eventually enjoys it, once she's gotten over the initial noise.
I am struggling as I am not getting 10 seconds to myself at all. My husband works everyday & I have limited support. I feel like i'm failing them both, as I can't split my time enough. I'm missing my toddler grow up but also missing my baby grow up.
I feel stuck & I am not always enjoying motherhood. This shit is so hard.
Any tips on how I can get my toddler to adapt to the baby? Or how I can cope? I've become the miserable snappy mum I swore i'd never become.
Love from a very overwhelmed mum x
