Nursery help please!!!!

I’m due to return to work from maternity leave in January 2027 and I’m DREADING IT, he’ll be 1. I just feel so bad for him, I have such a clingy baby and I think he’s going to think I’ve abandoned him 😭 we co-sleep, is exclusively breastfed (won’t take a bottle / dummy but will sometimes have small amounts of pumped milk in a cup with straw) and I’m the only one who can put him down for naps (fed to sleep) and then I roll away. Not even his dad can put him to sleep (he falls asleep with rocking but wakes the moment he touched the mattress when transferred).

I’ve never spent more than 2 hours away from him (2-3 times). We don’t have any family or friends who can look after the baby to even practice him being away from us.

In an ideal world I would wait for him to go to nursery when he is able to talk and understand that I’m not leaving him forever and I’ll be coming back, the thought of it breaks me!

I’m already struggling with mental health (post natal depression and anxiety). I’m considering taking a career break (if my work will let me), or staying off sick for a few months or paying back my enhanced maternity pay (£9000) and leaving the company! Money will be very tight but this could work for around 6 months.

I don’t know what to do, any suggestions or experience would be appreciated!

Thanks xxx

I’m in the same boat! And you’re not alone! It literally keeps me up at night!

My girl is also ebf, co sleeper, clingy, all for mama. No bottles and isn’t eating much in terms of weaning.

I’ve been thinking about trying a v v gentle Ferber method to at least get her falling asleep independently but I can’t bring myself to do it because I don’t believe in crying it out and I love having her close to me.

I don’t have any suggestions for how to make this better or to lessen the dread as I’m right there with you but know you’re not alone Xxxx

I absolutely feel this so deeply! My honest opinion is if you can afford to, take the extra time with your baby!!! It’s just time you’ll never get back. But if not (like me) then I’m trying to work towards the nursery schedule for her meal times so that that’s at least one thing that feels normal for her. Also taking her out to socialise as often as possible so she is comfortable around new people and children. I cosleep, ebf and she doesn’t have dummy or bottles but when she’s 1+ she won’t need milk as much but I will pump and give the nursery anyway just in case. She’ll actually be starting nursery 2 weeks before her 1st birthday though 😭 … also you should have accrued a good amount of annual leave - have you looked into using that to phase back so you can optimise time with baby while gently returning to work? It is so overwhelming and goes against all of our natural instincts. Overall I am so with you on waiting until they can speak and understand better. It is soul destroying 😭

I used the faded method to help LO get to sleep. It took time but it worked. She now independently falls asleep. But for me, I was the same, didn’t believe in crying it out, she’s not breast fed but is quite clingy, especially to me. So this method I found great. I was always there and never left her side till she was ready for me to do so.
Also a momma that works in a nursery. It sounds crazy, but babies are so different when they’re in a nursery setting with other children around them. They pick up the routine faster than you could ever believe at home. Some things you try at home and don’t work, they do within a nursery setting ☺️

My baby is 8 months. Also EBF and we part co-sleep and feed to sleep but he can do naps transfered to his cot. Got dad to start doing naps in the baby carrier bouncing him when he was very sleepy and he took to it well. Now dad can do any of the naps. That was my major worry tbh. See if your partner can start rocking baby to sleep for one nap xx

Thought I'd say that I did take a sabbatical break, and used parental leave (you are allowed to take 4 weeks a year I think, and this is a government initative), plus you've generally accrued quite a bit of holiday after maternity leave.
I did not regret taking that extra time with baby, even though it made money a bit tighter - but I know not everyone can have these options.
It's so hard the mum guilt whatever you do!

I feel like I'm being harsh based off all the other comments but your baby won't think you're abandoning them ❤️

I think maybe we overthink it and it’ll be worse for us than it is for them. Babies change a LOT over a few months so you don’t necessarily know how baby will be at that point. Especially as they move on to more solids.
Honestly I feel the same and even though I have 6 months left it haunts me every day and I just want to cry. But I know she’ll have fun and get to spend time enjoying activities with babies her age. Plus I’ll actually have money to do fun things with her, take her out of nursery whenever I have days off, enjoy days out, go on holidays etc.
I’m going to discuss with work going part time and compressing those hours, and my husband will also be compressing hours, so she only has to do 2.5 days per week

Do better ladies

This app is so toxic.
Nearly every post asking for advice of some sort and if someone doesn’t like your opinion or you don’t validate everyone’s feelings then you’re immediately bullied and bombarded with names and insults. Women have gone as far as making fun of my baby and his medical needs, his looks, telling me to kill myself. It’s also nonstop bashing husbands, etc.
And don’t waste your time making a report cause you’ll be ignored.
Thought becoming a mom would be this wonderful experience to make some new friends and be uplifted and I’ve come to the conclusion that majority of women in all walks of life are just truly horrible human beings.
I’m totally okay keeping my circle intimate. This world is going to shit. ✌🏽

I know she can tell that it's unusual

So my husband has to go away for work, he's been away from Tuesday and will be back Friday night. I am at home with our three months old daughter, well it's going ok we both getting through, I had a phone call with my husband, her dad, last night and I think she was a little whingey because she could hear him but he obviously wasn't there, well she woke up at four ish for a feed and then when I placed her back in the cot after she fell asleep she was up again, yawning wanting sleep but not going, well I picked her up for a cuddle instantly she was asleep, same happened at seven ISH feed time, is this because she knows he's not there and needs extra comfort or am I reading into this because I got another week of my husband being away and I don't like because of her age but we can't do anything about it.

How much is your baby eating?

I feel so stressed when I see these TikTok’s of peoples babies eating huge bottles like 7-8oz per feeding and my LO is barely eating 4oz MAYBE 5. He is combo fed but whether it’s formula or breastmilk he won’t go past 5oz. His pediatrician is happy with his weight gain and he sleeps pretty decent at night, but I can’t help but wonder why he doesn’t eat as much as other babies 😅 (he’s 5 months btw)

Keeping Baby Entertained

How are we all keeping our baby’s entertained? My girlie’s wake windows are sometimes up to 2 hours now, and I’m out of things to do😭😂

We practice tummy time, stretches to encourage rolling, reading, singing nursery rhymes, etc. But she only ever lasts a few minutes before getting frustrated, she must think I’m boring😂😂

Ps she also hates her pram so walks aren’t really an option unless she’s in her carrier, but if she’s not tired she gets mad in there too😂
