I’m posting this anonymously because I’m really struggling and would genuinely value some honest advice from other mums. ❤️
I’ve been with my partner for years and we have a 3-year-old daughter together. The biggest issue in our relationship has always been his relationship with alcohol. Before having our daughter, there were some really bad incidents where drinking and going out with friends seemed to take priority over our relationship.
Things did improve after having our daughter and the incidents became less frequent, but whenever he does go out drinking, I’m filled with anxiety because I never know what state he’s going to come home in.
Mother’s Day was particularly awful. He came home extremely drunk, was sick and urinated on the sofa, despite me repeatedly asking him not to get into that state. It completely ruined the day for me.
Then this weekend it happened again. He went out drinking and ended up walking home. I noticed through his location that he had been in the same place for around 30 minutes and couldn’t get hold of him. I was so worried that I contacted the police, but ultimately ended up getting my 3-year-old out of bed and driving around looking for him because I didn’t know what else to do.
Eventually he came home, clearly having passed out or fallen asleep somewhere, and then passed out on our brand-new sofa and urinated on it. The next morning he was still intoxicated and spoke to me horribly. This all happened with our daughter around, which is something I’m finding particularly difficult to deal with.
Now, as always, he’s saying he’s sorry and that he’s going to get help and stop drinking. But I’ve heard this before. This has been going on for years, and I’m struggling to believe that anything will actually change.
What hurts me most is that I feel like he has a choice. He could go out, have a few drinks and come home safely to his family — but instead he repeatedly gets himself into a state where I’m left worrying, cleaning up the consequences and dealing with the emotional fallout.
I desperately want to keep our family together. This is the only family life my daughter has ever known, and that makes the thought of leaving incredibly painful. But I also know I can’t keep living like this, and I can already see that it’s having an impact on my daughter.
I’m feeling completely torn and honestly don’t know what I should do anymore.
If you were in my position, what would you do? Would you give him another chance if he genuinely sought help, or would years of broken promises be enough for you to walk away?
Please be kind — I’m really struggling and just looking for honest advice from people who may have been through something similar. ❤️

My parents stayed together for the kids and it meant us growing up in a toxic household where neither of them were happy and everyone was always on edge waiting for the next argument. So imo keeping the family together is not a good enough reason to stay with someone. If you’re giving him one more chance I would lay down some firm boundaries and agreements. He would need to be getting on a proper program, AA meetings, getting a sponsor, committing to stop drinking forever. Know that he is an addict, there is every chance that he will fall off the wagon, so you need to think about whether you can live the rest of your life with the knowledge this may happen, whether you can support him e.g. he is sober for years and an event triggers him to go out, maybe you could support through that, but not him messing up after a couple of weeks/months. This must be so tough but you need to prioritise you and your daughter and think about the early memories she is forming. It can’t go on like this.

I don’t know if I have advice but I just want to say I’m so sorry. I understand what this is like as a child of an alcoholic mother. I want to give you a little hope by saying my mother is now sober and has been for 14 years.
Unfortunately it wasn’t without losing her marriage to my father.
There’s lots of factors that go into this but the main one is your child is starting to be old enough to pick up on things. Even if she can’t understand, I’m sure she’d notice that daddy is acting weird. And to me that is heartbreaking.
For some people, ultimatums work. For others, it creates more deception by trying to hide the drinking. Do you think he’d change his act if you told him you’ll kick him out? You could even give him 1-3 months to find help or something. But you have to mean it, if you don’t think you can do it, then better try something else.
Idk your name but I will say a prayer for you, your daughter, and your partner.

Hey, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It sounds like you’ve reached out to him but then when he’s out that’s obviously not at the forefront of his mind. Possibly some time away from each other could be the push he needs to get some help? You could always frame it as a temporary separation to give him the opportunity to work on himself as it doesn’t feel like he has the motivation and commitment right now towards bettering himself for your family. It sounds like your daughter is already starting to notice everything going on, so I guess sometimes the harder choices are the better in the long run for the mental wellbeing of our kids as they get older. Sending love ❤️

I agree with Lauren about the temporary separation. Instead of giving him another chance with the idea that THEN he will change, you could say to him that you can’t keep living like this but he is welcome back if he gets help and shows that he can stay sober for x amount of time.
One thing I’d say from your post that probably isn’t true- he probably can’t go out and have just one or two drinks. Most alcoholic people can’t. So if the conversation up until now has been about moderation, that part may need to change.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I hope he’s able to get treatment and stick to it for the sake of your family.

That’s alcoholism in a nutshell. He can’t control himself around alcohols. He needs to get professional help, but that needs to come from himself. I think you need to be more firm and stand your ground with him, that he gets help or you get a divorce. It will only gets worse from here. No child needs to have a person like that around as a dad. It’s going to be a difficult thing to do, but if he truly loves you and your daughter he will want to get better. It’s a huge problem that a lot of people downplay and often wait too long until the consequences become far worse than “urinating on the sofa”. You need to take a stance and make it loud and clear. Your daughter is learning, and I’m sure you don’t want her to think that this behaviour is normal and okay growing up either. I made it clear from day 1 with my partner, if we are going to have a life and a family together he needs to quit smoking, it’s a bonus that he has also stopped drinking as well. He never touch them now.
Have taken Eva to the pharmacist, A&E and the GP. They all said the external one is impetigo which I agree with. For her tongue (it looked a bit different yesterday and the day before when they saw it) one said dehydration and one said thrush. Chatgpt now says Gingivostomatitis? She can’t eat anything from the pain and antibiotics and thrush medication haven’t helped. Taking her again to the GP in a few hours. 🙁

My baby is currently 6 months old, and I’m already thinking about going back to work when he’s around 12 months.
Honestly, I don’t really want to leave him at nursery this young, but I also want to continue building my career.
For mums who started nursery around 1 year old — how did you find it? Did you feel like it affected your bond with your baby, or did you both adjust okay?

Does anyone ever struggle with their husband/partner not being present in the moment? My husband is great, he cooks, he cleans, he changes their diapers, he takes care of us. But sometimes, when the kids are doing something for the first time, he's not present. Like today, for example. My son is almost 3 and my daughter is 2 months old. My husband just got back from the gym and my daughter was doing tummy time, and her big bro was copying her and they were having a cute moment together. So I told him to go look at how cute they were! He was on his phone, on instagram or tiktok or whatever. He looks over for a second, smiles and goes back to his phone. I told him to look! And he looks again for a second and that was it. I got so mad cuz I was like why can't you just be in the moment and look at them enjoying a sweet moment together. He said he saw and I was like yeah, for a freaking second. Idk. It got me hella mad. Sorry for rambling. Anyone else feel this?

For context we have a 7 month old and have been together for almost three years I only ask because I ask myself every single day what I should do whether that means breaking up or staying together like this man just every day pisses me off, pisses me off like he makes life a living hell sometimes and I try to see through the bad and look for the good, but I don’t know if I should be doing that you know?
Let me know how you handle seeing the good over the bad cause i know there is more good than bad but GOD DAMN he is annoying.

Hi,
So my bestie, lets call her Bea, just bought an apartment. I am so happy for her. Apparently she thinks she only has like 30 daysnto move on her something (she confused me).
So, on Sunday the two of us, my son, 3 of our friends and the son of one of those friends are going to an exhibit of sorts. I have booked a table at a cafe. Bea said she may not be able to come but refused to confirm her other plans with her mums and waited til she was contacted instead.
Annoying but fine. She said she can come.
Then she booked something with her Mum on the Saturday. Not an issue.
Over the weekend she called me and told me about the apartment and said her Mum isn't comfortable/able to drive at night so is staying atbhers Saturday night. No issue, why would it be.
Then apparently because her Mum is staying she has decides on cancelling with us because her Mum is going to help her pack.
This is annoying and has upset me. It feels she is unneccessarily cancelling on us. I also texted an floated the idea of me and/or our friends helping after our catch up on Sunday. She never responded.
Also, we caught up last week but due to issues with childcare (I need someone close by for my son in case preschool called. It was his first day back after surgery) we had to re jig our original plans and agreed if she wasn't going away we would do something Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday this week as that is when I am kiddo free.
She was in communicado yesterday and I was up the coast but was home by like 10:30.
She has also been incommunicado today.
I texted her asking if we were doing anything and she asked of I had any thoughts and about childcare. I said no and he was in preschool so it was all good. She then hasn't responded further.
Also we agreed to catch up on Friday and she knew I was catching a train up the coast at around 1pm. I reached out and she didn't respond til 11:30. I had to say that she knew I was on a schedule and then she said lets cancel. She mentioned she had been on heaps of phone calls. I found out later it was about buying the house. Would a text have killed her though?
Prior to that we had agreed on plqns and she was going to pick me up. She texted when she was meant to be leaving and aaid ahe was helping her flat mate with their smoke alarm. Then she was late and said her Dad rang. She frequently talks through the car so could have driven and talked like she always does.
A few weeks ago we had planned to go apartment huntong togethwr because I couldn't go the previous weekend. Booked it in for Saturday and on the Friday night as we are saying goodbye after trivia, she mentions maybe doing somethinf on Sunday. I asked about Saturday and she said her Mum was coming up and she was going with her.
Anyway, I am upset that she seems to be consistently ditching me, late as she has chosen to do other things, that she has chosen to ditch our catch up because her Mum is staying over. It feels like she juat doesn't care sometimes.
She sees her Mum frequently, was there on the weekend and stayed over saturday night and will be seeing her all of next Saturday.
A lot of our plans she either has done or is doing with her Mum. It's hard to book things with her because she is constantly doing things with her Mum.
When I started dating my partner she had issues becaise I prioritised him a bit and I wasn't as available. Same when I got other friends (no longer friends with them for reasons unrelated to Bea) and spend a bunch of time with them.
Then same thing when I had my kiddo.
We talked about it many times and I took it on board and tried to make our friendship a bit more of a priority.
Now I feel like I have to fight for us to hang out.
