Why are so many parents against tv/screen time?

Me and all my 4 siblings were never “not allowed tv” we had access to it 24/7, we loved it…but we also loved playing together and playing outside. What is so terrible about watching tv?

As an adult who still spends time outside or playing with my kids, all I see is other adults staring at their phone, scrolling on social media…idk I’m just confused why there’s such a stigma around letting a child watch tv i guess.

All these influencers or mums on the playground I hear that say “no tv time for my kids” yet they spend all day everyday on their phone? If it’s damaging, why is there screens quite literally everywhere? Shouldn’t we try to do something about this?

Well I’d like to point out the difference in neurodevelopment for a toddler in comparison to an adult. Children are very easily influenced by what they see, hear, etc on a screen. Many modern day options for tv shows are far too overstimulating for such young, immature, developing minds. Never mind the issues with unrestricted access to the internet.

The tv shows nowadays are also way different than what you watched as a kid

It’s not good for their brain function.

My brain is fully formed, my child’s is not. And even then I recognise that scrolling on my phone is not good for me.

A small amount of research about screen time for children would answer this question. It’s very well known that screen time for children is not recommended.

Surely you can also see there is a difference between 90’s cartoons and the shite aimed at children these days?
And that what adults do and what children should do are completely different?

This post feels like judgemental rage bait tbh.

I think there are extremes on either side, as with many things. With our daughter we made the choice, following current research, to keep screen time to a minimum until she was 2. Now we will watch a bit of TV a few times a week. I think screens have their uses and most children will need to be tech literate to exist in a modern world however there’s no rush for that and the reason you see so many adults with our heads in our phones is that were addicted to them 😂😂 I know I am but I make the effort to be off my phone as much as possible around my daughter and explain what I’m doing with it if not. There’s also a difference between having a tv on and having tablets which are more addictive and more isolating. Watching TV in my house is a social activity, we do it together and talk about it. I’ve never put the tv on to keep my daughter busy while I get stuff done, she just joins in or plays and is now at a stage where she happily plays independently for decent chunks of time.

I have no idea but I do find the “bring back 90s summers” because we all didn’t watch tv. I remember having a game boy, play station, cartoons on all the time! I watched the VHS of Mary Poppins so many times I broke our VHS player! 😂

Am I over reacting

Today is my baby shower, one of my friends has let me down due to having no baby sitter however she has been out drinking all night so surely who ever had her child could keep him for a couple more hours ? Maybe I’m thinking selfishly but I just feel like it’s an excuse.
Then my mum and sister have been out drinking last night and are now hungover , my sister is asking if she can just stay at home instead.
I feel really upset about this but feel like I’m just being selfish because obviously they have there own lives and they can do as they please
How would you feel ?

Childminder vs Nursery

My little boy will be turning 1 in November, and I’m currently trying to decide between sending him to a nursery or a childminder. We’ve been offered a place at both, so I’d love to hear other people’s experiences!

The childminder could take him from January for 4 days a week, and she also has two assistants working with her. The main downside is that she takes 6 weeks of annual leave each year, which would mean having to plan all my annual leave around when she’s off.

The nursery wouldn’t be able to take him until mid-April, and they could only offer 3 days a week. However, they’re only closed for 2 weeks over Christmas.

I did get a better feeling from the nursery in terms of the facilities. It felt more modern, and they had a dedicated sleep room with floor beds for naps, which I really liked.

I’m only returning to work 3 days a week, but choosing the nursery would mean taking 3 weeks of unpaid leave while waiting for his place to start.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been in a similar situation. Did you choose a nursery or a childminder, and were you happy with your decision? Are there any pros or cons I might not have considered? 😊

Toxic in laws? Am i wrong?

Hey everyone, I need some advice regarding toxic families (in laws) . My sister in law and fiance fell out five years ago when he was still living at home, I was in the house at the time of the argument and had to intervene because my fiance got incredibly mad and hit the door instead if his sister. I had to intervene and calm him down which resulted in him moving out and I was living together and him and his sister not speaking until last year, which was when our baby was due. In those four years he attempted to make amends brought her birthday cards gave her money. And she did not make any effort back. His mum would constantly tell him he needs to make more effort which Would upset him, I supported him through all of this. I’d also like to add when I first met my partner he wasn’t speaking to a sister then either and it seems to be a toxic family pattern where they fall out and don’t apologise.
When we found out, I was pregnant his sister did not bother to congratulate me or congratulated me when we got engaged or when we brought our first house.

However, fast forward to when our daughter was born, she thought it was okay to turn up at the hospital with her mum after not even a single message from her. I would just like you to keep in mind my daughter was rushed from my bedside into the NICU and the same day she was coming off her tube feeds and I was trying to breastfeed for the first time. I had made it very clear. I didn’t want any visitors. I was also very unwell with sepsis requiring IV antibiotics.

Fast forward five months later my partner has secretly handed our daughter to her sister to hold while I was in the house and I had made it very clear to him. I didn’t want that to happen. Because for all that time she still did not message me saying congratulations. So I said something which was I didn’t want you to hold her. She then called me a name while holding my baby. It’s completely fractured my relationship with the in-laws, however I’m adamant I haven’t done anything wrong. After someone that builds their social media profile on girlhood to not even congratulate your sister-in-law. I think it’s completely two-faced. I’m just wondering what people were doing that situation was I out of line as I’ve been made to feel like I’m the one in the wrong?

A little sensitive over my mums grandparent name

I’m due in December with my first baby. My mum and I have a weird relationship, we do get along but we have very different views and can fall out. She’s said she wants to be known as ‘meema’, which I’m really not keen on. To me, it’s too similar to ‘mama’ and ‘mummy’, and as a first time mum, I don’t want that feeling of being called mama to be taken away. Am I just being too sensitive, or am I right to talk to her about it? The thing is she always calls me sensitive over stuff like this, but it’s important to me.

Disillusioned since pregnancy

For reference I'm a young mom 21 and I have been with my first and only partner for the past 7 years living together with my family for 4 years and moved countries together as well. Since becoming pregnant I've felt completely disillusioned with my partner we used to fight alot and always bring up breaking up, I'd always have a list of things I'd wish he would change or do that weren't unreasonable (things like remembering dates or making me feel special), I also thought he would be able to make me a SAHM one day or earn enough for both of us. I'm finally realising I'm really stuck with him, he isn't going to change anything, I was just in love with his potential this whole time, so I stopped nagging, stop wasting my breath and stop having unrealistic dreams now it feels like this is the final nail in coffin of my youth, dreaming, and being in love, don't get me wrong I love him and have no intention of leaving him. but is anyone else coming to terms with what a peaceful forever with your partner really looks like when you save your breath and energy, totally accept them for who they really are and hence all that crazy fiery love dissipates?
