Advice on only/multiple kids

I just had my first baby at the beginning of September. I’m turning 34 next week and have been struggling with whether we should have more children. We tried for a few years for our daughter so it wasn’t easy. And I’m not a dinosaur or anything, but I definitely feel that way when I think about having another baby in the next couple years 👵

At the same time, my step son who we have part time is 10years old so my little girl would be an only child. I had my little sister growing up and now we are so close. I know the beauty of having a sibling to grow with. I worry about her being lonely 🥺 Especially since I don’t have family or friends with kids close to her age or with children at all.

Any advice/wisdom?

We have struggled to get pregnant the first time around too but I do want a sibling for my son who is 3 now. I worry about him left alone in this world after we die and he will have someone to call family. We are struggling again but it will be worth it in my opinion

I have two siblings. I grew up so incredibly lonley, neither wanted to play with me. There isnt a massive gap between us either. So unfortunately having a sibling doesnt garantee theyll get on.

You can if youre worried about them being lonley engage in baby groups and finding mum friends with kids similar age to them. I engaged my daughter in a lot of baby groups and shes a little social bunny.

I totally get how you feel. It’s an ongoing thing me & my partner struggle with. He’s an only child whereas I’m one of five. He had a very lovely childhood with very close family friends, a great group of friends at school & the odd cousin and I had a very lonely childhood with no one really other than my siblings (I was bullied & my family moved around a lot so I wasn’t able to build life long friendships etc). Me & my siblings range from age 29 (me) to 40 (my eldest sister) and we’re now at a point where only a few of us get on. My two brothers don’t speak, I barely speak to my two sisters and only my sister speaks to our other sister. Siblings can have beautiful bonds that last a life time but that isn’t a guarantee. You’ll know what’s best for your family but just know that your child won’t be better or worse off whether they have a sibling or not. I used to feel so sorry for only children, now I don’t ❤️

baby turned three months on my 34th birthday. we were about to look into fertility testing when we got our positive. my husband is an only child and very much wants our daughter to have a sibling (or two 😬). We’re planning on trying for #2 when LO turns 1.
I have a younger sibling myself and while we fought growing up, she’s currently living with us and we’ve been super close since she was in high school. But I also know plenty of people that aren’t close with their siblings at all. it’s very much a personal decision.

Totally agree, siblings don't guarantee a best friend. My partner was an only child, loved it, and has tons of close friends!
Also, don't let society make you feel old at 34. I’m 38 and just had my first, so you’re defo not a dinosaur! My baby has no cousins her age either, so I’m just actively building our own little community.
Think about how do you feel about having a hard time trying again, while managing a toddler?
Also, when I'm overwhelmed (like exhausted at 3am or soaking wet after baby swimming 😅) I try think wtf does life look like with two in these chaotic moments, not just the good ones? But then again, people cope and happily!
Picture yourself like 5 years from now. Before finances, double buggies, and logistics kick in, what does your gut tell you? Trust that feeling and all the best whatever you do!

Have the kids. Being an only child sucks and having a huge age gap creates a distant relationship until they all grow up to be much older. When you’re gone, it’s going to be legacy and relationship to ground them. I’m a kind of only child and so is my husband. Huge age gaps in our family. A sibling with an age gap is better than no sibling at all.

Following for advice too as I have the same thoughts, my husband is super keen for another, I’m not against it but I just don’t feel confident and “ready”.. just fear of the unknown at this stage- my family are super close in general! I have two sisters and I can’t imagine life without them, and I want that for my daughter but I acknowledge that there are no guarantees.

Relationship struggles and a newborn

Strap got for the long post.

I’ve been with my partner since the beginning of the year. We fell pregnant straight away, unplanned and even on contraception…. We chatted and he didn’t want another kid and managed my expectations re that.

I said I would have the baby on my own and he changed his mind saying he would be there for us. We had a very fast yet surprising secure relationship since and he is a great guy.

He has 2 other children from his marriage. His ex is nice but they have no boundaries at all, they are very matey and I’ve had to flag stuff several times as it feels like they are very much still husband and wife.

I had the baby 4 weeks ago, after many hospital stays, complications and worries. He works stupidly hard 6 days a week and had shared custody of other children.

The routine with the others is not in place and it’s late bedtimes, dinner times and early wake ups. Which makes it hard both while pregnant and now with a newborn, I seem to be on duty alone loner because if we are with the other they need his support even though they are a lot older. I’m not asking for them to be ignored or disregarded but it’s tough when it impacts my “time off” when he is out 8-8 and I’m in bed about 9.

His ex and him do “swaps” and make childcare plans but I have blown up today as I feel that I’m not considered. Having the others extra means I’m solidly having the newborn upto 10pm whilst he bedtimes the others and also then from 1.30/3am when the baby comes to bed. He needs rest but I take over when they come up…. And the others sometimes are awake 4.30-6 then go downstairs.

I’ve tried to communicate my needs and need for support. It just lands as if I begrudge his other kids and it isn’t that, I just need support and us time is never a thing now so I feel emotional to have to find more of myself for long running on nothing.

I have chronic health conditions and they make motherhood even harder. His ex is supported by her family and his family collecting the kids, having sleeps overs and doing school runs. Stupidly I feel envious because I don’t have that.

Because we are fresh, we have never spoken finances or stuff like that even when I brought it up several times. His response is “I will try and help where I can” and he buys stuff. However, I’m getting triggered that the ex sleeps soundly knowing all that’s taken care off, when her time off starts and all the clubs are paid for by him.

I feel like I’m the surrogate, the silly woman that got pregnant and so on. I feel like I watch on their ironed out agreements and maybe it appears still a team. I have no security or breathing space myself to know he has the reins…. I have a house alone, bills and everything to cover and think of.

I brought pretty much everything for our child. He has got stuff too but it’s hugely disproportionate and things compounded by the fact him and his ex have a “clothing fund” account for their kids…. Sounds stupid but I’m again envious she never has to think about laying it all out herself.

He is a great guy, doing all he can. I feel so bad for moaning and feeling lonely, like a solo parent and arguing all the time because I can’t shake the disparity.

We had a prem baby and got kept in an hour after we got out the ex and kids came over. Within no time his ex said she was overwhelmed as she had the kids extra days (his mum helped alot) and we couldn’t have them over night due to my surgery. Then there was the question of half term times, collections, clubs resuming and so on. I felt and feel invisible.

I can’t shift the constant feel like I’m alone and solo parenting. If I wasn’t in a relationship with him, he would have our child more hours and also I would get a break. I envy his ex’s time, space, her time, financial security and everything being sorted re the children.

Sorry for the rant but I’m just wondering if I’m just being a selfish person who can’t see the wood for the tree’s, a post partum emotional wreak….. or valid in my feelings.

Every-time I speak about it, I get so frustrated emotional and angry I come across horrible. I lose my points because I’m so emotionally invested and I feel my child is getting less, I feel I am bottom of the list and I just can’t shift it.

I feel as if I'm pretty funny and I find a lot of inappropriate things hilarious. I'm gross lmfao we all pee we all poop and we all fart etc. if your down to get to know me feel free to message.
