Pump recommendations for a working mom!

I am due in November and plan on nursing at home and pumping at work. I am a teacher so I won't have a lot of time to pump. Can any of you wonderful mommas reccomend a high quality pump that pumps fast, is quiet, and is portable?

I have a Medela. They make one with a portable battery (it’s a little pricey). I’m able to get most of my pumping done in 15 minutes and I over produce. Definitely worth the money.

Avatar

Spectra! It was much better than Medela for me.

Avatar

The Elvia pump would be great for you. Expensive but worth it

Avatar

I have the freemie and it works just as well as my Medela but hands free, rechargeable, and I can get 3 30 minute sessions with each charge, since in home over night and nursing I usually just charge it then

Avatar

I got a free ameda pump through my insurance. Only takes 20 mins to pump. You can use batteries or plug it in.

Avatar

I have a lansinoh smart pump, it can also be battery operated. I really like it but since other brands have aftermarket bottles that can attach. I think lansinoh only works with lansinoh.

Avatar

Also a teacher, I used Medela for my first daughter... this was covered by insurance.. this year I’ll use it again while I save for the willow... it’s a portable pump but it’s pricey... I don’t know if it’s covered by insurance

I was a covid nurse using spectra. I pumped in 5 minutes got 4 oz each side

The Spectra S1 is amazing because it’s hospital grade and has a rechargeable better. I also have the Elvie and it’s super convenient and good in a pinch but it doesn’t empty me fully so I end up with clogged ducts if I use it too much.

Elvie! It makes life so much easier

Elvie!!!

I've heard good things about elvie. I personally used the spectra. Googling reviews it seems like the suction is better on spectra. The other thing to consider is if you produce a lot you may need to stop pumping with the elvie, empty the bottle and start again, where as the spectra you can just use a bigger bottle.

I've been pumping at work since May and I use the Spectra. It's not the most light weight but doesn't bother me taking it back and forth! It's quiet, it's hospital grade, covered by my insurance, replacement parts affordable and easy to order (Amazon). I got the wide neck larger bottles so I didn't have to change out the bottles during the day.

Ameda mya! Portable and small.

I have tried 5 pumps. To make a long story short here is how I rank them
5) Lansinoh (don't get me started, Just say NO IMO)
4)Willow (great suction but you can't manually adjust between stimulation and expression which means sometimes you'll be in stimulation mode for 5-10 minutes, also much pricier for bags/replacement parts)
3) Elvie (much quieter than Willow and the lower suction issue is resolved with a smaller flange)
2) Spectr 9+ (great portable pump, I like to use with freemie cups)
1) Spectra S1 (more settings than the 9+ and it definitely helps empty me better than any of the others, I also use with freemie cups)

Right now I'm working from home and I primarily use the S1 but if all my pump parts are in the dishwasher I'll use the Willow or Elvie.

I like the medela double electric, but i also really like my spectra 2

Avatar

I second the Spectra S1! I used a hospital grade medela for about 2 weeks (babe came before my pump did!) the Spectra was SO much more comfortable, I’m going to be doing the spectra and Elvie this time around!

Avatar

Freemie pump! I loved mine!

Avatar

I’ve had a lot of issues with my Elvie pumps. One works no problem every time the other I have to play with for at least 5 minutes each time to get the suction to work. I try using it turning it off and on, taking it apart and back together again until finally it works. Each time it seems to be something different that solves the issue so personally I’d steer clear if you are short on time but that doesn’t seem to be everyone’s experience of it from reading the above.

Spectra S9

Avatar

I bought the Elvie. I’m not due until December so I haven’t gotten to test it out yet. It’s a bit of a splurge, but everyone I know that has it loves it. I also got it for the same reason you did. I need to pump at work and can’t leave the floor to do so, because I’m an ER nurse.

Avatar

Elvie all the way!! High quality, portable so you can pump hands free on the go & quiet! You can pump 5oz out pretty fast depending on your milk production. I’m in sales and I haven’t returned to work yet but they will be my saving grace for pumping on the road👍🏼

Avatar

Spectra was amazing! I used a ton of other brands with my first child and they weren’t good at all (ameda, hygeia, medela). I have a few I am getting rid of

Avatar

HAAKAA you will thank me later. It is a hands free natural suction silicone pump

Avatar

I really love my baby Buddha. Super small and i can pump in half the time compared to my spectra

Avatar

I tried the medela and didn't like it/ got nothing out when I pumped now have the minbie one and get 4/5oz in 15/20min.

But I definitely recommend a hacka silicone pump for building a freazer stash before you go back to work/reliving engorgement in those early days.

Avatar

Hey momma! I'm an LC and pump expert having owned and used 15+ pumps. Plus I am a teacher too 😉 I suggest the spectra S9 with freemie flanges

Avatar

I have the Spectra portable one (it’s blue) and love it. I can walk around and do things and don’t have to worry about having a plug next to me. I also use the Hakaa while nursing so I get a little extra each time, and it’s helped my milk supply build up a bit faster.

Avatar

I got Medela the basic one and it works really well for me. I pump right before leaving to work and then two times at work (8h work day). It usually takes me 15min to set it up, pump and pack it up. I got it through my insurance, super simple process. Medela also does overnight delivery of parts if you ever need anything.

Avatar

The spectra s1. When I first had my son I got a motif twist, it gave me mastitis and hurt so much. Then I switch and tried the lasloh it just sucked all around. Then I tried the medela. And it worked well but the face plate got moldy and it was gross because it was a open system. So I got the spectra s1 it’s quiet and it has a night to help you see in the dark so you can see how much you’re pumping as well. It’s quiet and comfortable, it’s got more massage modes than the madela so you can find the best setting for you that you can’t really do that with the Madela. The rechargeable battery is so worth it🙌🏻 you will ALWAYS find some unexpected way to need it. And I exclusively pumped for 18 months if that helps you at all.

Avatar

I used the spectra s plus 2 but I wasn’t able to pump very much due to my supply dropping. I was using the medela pump in style for a while WIC gave me one.

Avatar

For me, a medela is just what you need.

I would suggest if you are still cautious in choosing which one (Considering these pumps are like investments) - look for rental options in your area so you could try which one fits you most

Avatar

Baby Buddha was the best portable pump!

Avatar

Spectra S2! I pumped at work with it for over a year. Really quiet and super efficient. I was able to build up my milk supply with it and get a large freezer stash super quick! It has has a ton of settings/strengths which was really great too!

Avatar

I got the elvie for using at work and it's been life changing! Because it's wireless and fits inside my bra I can pump on my commute and in the office without anyone even realising I'm pumping!

Avatar

Spectra!! Also, don’t purchase one!! Insurance will cover the cost of one in the hospital before you go home

Avatar

Spectra S1! Hospital grade, rechargeable, and has a light for any late night pumping. (I was Literally just thinking how the light is genius!) It is great quality. I purchased mine 4 years ago for my first and now I’m using it for my second.

Avatar

I used to take my electric medela pump in style to work and it was fine, then a friend recommended a hand pump and for some reason I thought it would be really hard so I didn't get it until I was almost weaning. I just got a little medela hand pump and it changed my life. It was so easy, quick, small and quiet I only regretted not getting it sooner. I also really liked that I could control the suction and speed. I wonder if its just me, any other hand pumpers out there?

Avatar

Spectra s9! It’s small and battery powered

Avatar

Spectra! I love mine, lots of settings, portable, not very loud, and due to feeding and pumping I got a little freezer stash going right away!

Avatar

I used the motif Luna with my first. It’s a little bulky but worked well. I wanted something smaller for my second. I got the willow 3 and I LOVE IT! Being hands free is amazing. I can still (carefully) pick up one of the kids. It’s spill proof when you use the bags, the reusable containers might spill if you bend too far over. My insurance only covered part of the cost but it was so worth it to not be stuck in one place. And to have no wires or tubes. Highly recommend the willow or any pump that goes in your bra. I think other companies might have different versions. I went with the willow 3 because spill proof and it got good comfort ratings where some others had reviews saying they were uncomfortable.

Avatar

I brought my spectra second hand ! And love it and I also have fremie cups which have 100% changed my pumping experience and recommend for working as u could work and mark papers etc at the same time

Avatar

Spectra!

Avatar

I bought Medela brand its amazing and is hands free when you buy the bra that goes with it I am 1 month away from having my first baby but the brand is very well known and quality working mom product

Avatar

Spectra s9!

Avatar

Elvie

Avatar

Following because my Medela pump is giving me a headache

Avatar

I LOVE my Ameda Mya! It fits in the palm of my hand and is super quiet! It is hands-free capable and has a massage setting

Avatar

Elvie for me 100%

Long night wakings and exhaustion

My 4 week old wakes once/ twice in the night. Problem is that the wake period is really long. It’s not that he’s awake for the whole time, but he struggles to get comfy again in his next to me. It often means I’m awake from about 2-4am and then he wakes again around 6 and we don’t get back to sleep after that one. We don’t get to sleep until around 10:30/11 as that is when he has his evening feed. My toddler is also waking in the night too sometimes. I’m so so tired that I can’t think straight and I’m also doing nursery runs/ looking after a toddler at the same time as a newborn and just feeling really overwhelmed. My husband helps out but he’s back at work and is knackered too. Is anyone else having similar issues?

Nap times

My baby girl is currently 14 weeks old and we have been struggling with naps for a while now. We manage to get her down a few times a day however she does not sleep longer than 30 min.. I know this is the length of a sleep cycle so it is normal but she l never seems to be fully rested especially in the afternoon. She often wakes up looking tired but refuses to go back to sleep, or if I hold her and rock her to sleep there is no way of putting her down again. The evenings are a battle because of it as she gets over tired. Any tips or advise on how to lengthen her naps?
