Experience with Mater Private Hospital

Hi lovely mums, we are from overseas and it is my 1st time to give birth here. I am scheduled to undergo CS at Mater Private Hospital.

Would love to hear about your experience at the said hospital and what were your preparations (prior to CS). We don't have family around and I have a 7yr old kid. Have no idea as well where to find a sitter? I am so lost and paranoid to look for one whom I can trust. Everything is overwhelming when you are in a different country + no support around. šŸ˜”

Will also ask this with my OB but really keen to know other mums' experience. Thank you so much mums! šŸ™šŸ™‚

I just had my elective c section at the Mater Hospital and found the whole experience really positive. I heard from friends and friends of friends about their great experiences at the Mater and am so glad I chose to have bubs there.

If you are going for a C-section, you will stay at the Mater for around 5 days during which, there will be a lactation consultant you can see and a physio will pop by to also see you and give you basic tips on movement. Depending on your OB and paediatrician, he or she would also visit you everyday.

Additionally, there are baby handling sessions and a dad’s session for your partner to attend. Your partner can also stay with you in hospital. There is a day bed for him to sleep on.

Meals are fantastic and you order it from the screen. So it’s super easy and convenient. Midwives are also consistently available to attend to your questions and needs. They’re so friendly and willing to help.

To summarise, the care is fantastic at the Mater.

completely agree with this. I am currently in the Mater Mothers Private after having an elective caesarean.

The midwives and care is amazing and you feel very supportive. As mentioned amazing, lots of additional support with lactation consultants and physio.

The food is amazing and they offer partner meals at a slight additional cost. I would say that the partner bed is quite uncomfortable, my husband is staying with me and is complaining about the comfort of the beds. Is has been going home in the afternoon for a longer sleep and then coming back to help overnight.

I wouldn’t go anywhere else in Brisbane for a baby

Mater is perfect! You’ll be very well looked after. Advocate for your wants and needs, they are very flexible and empathetic.

I had my first as a public patient and second privately through the Mater

Amazing experience!!! I delivered vaginally both times so can’t speak to the Caesar experience but the staff are all great. The private stay was better as we didn’t have our own room and it was a shorter stay when we were public.

Mater as a private patient was so so great and comfortable. Our daughter wasn’t allowed to stay unfortunately but your partner should be quite comfortable if they stay in the room with you as there’s a daybed type of thing for them to sleep on and you have your own bathroom/shower too. Food is fine as far as hospital food goes as well.

They do have the option for continued care to stay at the emporium hotel if you’re deemed safe to leave the hospital I think after day 2 where your child can stay - this might not be possible with Caesar given it’s major surgery. Worth asking about though if you want your child to be with you.

You can stay at the hotel while not being discharged from care. This was an option available when I had my baby in December last year.

Hi, I’m also from overseas with no family support and I found the mater perfect! They offer so much support even post labour. Good luck :)!

Order the max amount of food you can at each meal and your partner can get by without buying any food. Plus I loved the custard!

I really liked that you got your own private bathroom.

If needed, when you leave take as many of the frozen ice packs (or similar supplies) as you can. It helps a lot as I couldn't find anything at home to use as single use (for good hygiene). But I didn't have a CS so not sure if you will need it?
Make use of the lactation consultants that they have there too if you plan the breastfeed or express (no extra charge I believe)

The mater has the Emporium hotel option that your older child can stay with you (except for the actual birth) ask your OB about that (they have to clear you for it)

yes re ordering the max food when ordering room service. My husband and I have managed to get away with only ordering him extra at dinner!

Avatar

yes us too. Bfast was good because you could get a hot meal and a cold one so we either split it or switched each day. Some dinners worked for us too but we do like to eat more at dinner šŸ˜‚

Overall, looks like you mums have mostly positive experience. Such a relief!

Thank you for sharing your experiences. šŸ™‚

Day out after c section

Hey,
I had an emergency c section 1 week ago I obviously don't want a day out right now but I have things booked for the Easter holidays so in 2 weeks. I was just wondering if I will be overdoing it if I have a day out then or will I be ok? I would still take it as easy as I could. When did everyone feel good enough to go out?

Reduced Movements

Has anyone else gone in for monitoring for reduced movements and as soon as you arrive at triage the baby starts moving and the CTG is normal? It makes me feel like I am over reacting.

2nd pregnancy after c section

I’m not planning on getting pregnant anytime soon but in the future possibly. I just wanted to know how is pregnancy after c section like my fear is having to go through another emergency operation or even putting strain on my incision during pregnancy

Baby Movements

Hello, I’m a FTM currently 18W5D pregnant. I’ve been getting this tugging feeling in my stomach after I eat, it’s uncomfortable but not painful. I don’t know whether that’s the baby moving or round ligaments pain.

I’ve also been getting round ligament pain which is either a sharp stabbing pain or a stretching sensation. These happens whether or not I’ve eaten while the tugging feeling is only after I’ve eaten.

So, could the tugging feeling be the baby or something else.

Labour

Think im a bit confused really, i went into traige as was having contractions eveey 3-5mins. Since being here im now having them every 2-3mins which was confirmed with the machine and i think the toco was 90-100 and they feel painful and my lower back is in loads of pain but apparently im only just over 2cm dilated maybe, she has said i can stay here for a bit longer to see if things progress as had a previous quick birth as well but i dont understand why the pains are coming this quick if im only 2cm dilated and feel a bit deflated from it also.

I had a sweep this morning also.
