Self gratification disorder

Hi mums. I just wanted to know if anyone’s little one has suffered with this. My little girl has been doing this since about 7 months. At first we thought it was infantile spasms and were told to take her to the a&e after seeing the paediatric doctor we were told it is self gratification disorder. We have been told she will grow out of it by the age of 2.
If any other mums have experienced this it would be so reassuring to hear your story x

What is this?

If you type it in YouTube they have videos of babies and children doing this. It’s a child getting into a certain posture cause it feels good to them a bit like self soothing. I’d never heard of it until my little girl has been diagnosed with it

I dont have experience in having kids that do this but I know my mother would say I'd rub myself right up against my baby seats and stuff get red sweaty stiffen up etc as a baby
Because I was well ...... Making myself feel good
But I was so young I don't remember it and she said I was a baby

And don't remember doing it though so I must if grown out of it pretty well
She said she would just leave me to it unless there was people over then I'd be distracted with something else

So idk if that's reassuring for you but I know I personally did grow out of it

thank you for sharing. It’s reassuring knowing it’s something you grew out of. My little girl stiffens up too goes all red and sweaty x

my mum didn't even know there was a name for it haha 😅😆 she was just like well she knows what she wants and likes 🤣🤣🤣 and I think she was telling me it's to do in private time as a explanation to why not to with people over

But again I don't remember it so must if finished by nursery I guess which where I am starts at 3 ish

These days it seems there’s a label for everything 🙄aww it’s nice that she was understanding.
I’m hoping my baby grows out of it soon I just don’t want it to stop her from doing anything

Avatar

I don't mind labels it gives answers sometimes :)
All I remember was from a show I watched that had this in was that big reactions and harsh telling off sent this child on the show to the other direction as it was giving them attention it made them want to do it more often 😅 but usually as it's a behaviour that goes away it won't stop her doing anything :)

Avatar

thank you for telling me I won’t stop her from doing it and I try not to draw attention to it I’ll distract her with a toy if she’s been doing it for a long time cause she gets all sweaty. Hopefully it’ll be gone in no time 😊 x

I was actually wondering if my baby had that or not. She doesn’t get all red and sweaty, but literally EVERY time she’s tired and wants to go to sleep she lays on her tummy, tucks her hands under her, and for lack of a better word humps herself to sleep lol. Doesn’t do it much during the regular awake hours, but whenever she’s going down for a nap or sleep for the night lol.

Avatar

my little girl started doing it at bedtime and nap time. Now she just does it randomly through the day it looks like she’s stretching

Avatar

mine looks like both! Like she’s stretching but also just straight up humping! Lol

Avatar

It's a relaxing thing makes sense to why it's being used for sleep 🤣

My girl does this, from what I can tell, mostly in the car seat, but also whilst playing. She’s three now and we’re just starting to talk about the concept of privacy. I was an early bloomer in this too - I have memories of masturbation from about the age of 6, if not before, and my mum has mentioned I did it as a baby as well. I’ve always had a very healthy sex life and relationship with my body, and that’s something I’m keen for my girl to have too - we’ll be keeping the conversations open and honest

Avatar

I'm going through the same, push chair high chair anything with straps etc its very stressful and no one doctors etc seem to know what to do all I get is she will grow out of it which isn't very helpful.

Avatar

the doctors don’t seem concerned at all that’s what I’ve been told she’ll outgrow it. It’s stressful cause I feel like she needs to do it so days out are difficult as she likes to lie down and do this

Avatar

My daughter does it whilst strapped in like things like a highchair pushchair car seat or going to sleep on our laps when she's sleepy. It's looks like a spasm she gets hot and if you intrupt she will get upset. It's embarrassing especially when she's groaning when we are out and about you have to keep her distracted x

Long night wakings and exhaustion

My 4 week old wakes once/ twice in the night. Problem is that the wake period is really long. It’s not that he’s awake for the whole time, but he struggles to get comfy again in his next to me. It often means I’m awake from about 2-4am and then he wakes again around 6 and we don’t get back to sleep after that one. We don’t get to sleep until around 10:30/11 as that is when he has his evening feed. My toddler is also waking in the night too sometimes. I’m so so tired that I can’t think straight and I’m also doing nursery runs/ looking after a toddler at the same time as a newborn and just feeling really overwhelmed. My husband helps out but he’s back at work and is knackered too. Is anyone else having similar issues?

Is this true?

You can't enact your second amendment rights in an airport.
That's why they've sent ICE there.

Bottle refusal

EBF and deciding I want a bit more flexibility so wanted to introduce a bottle so I can go out more.

She used to take one three months ago. Now she flat out refuses and cries - doesn’t matter if it’s expressed breastmilk or formula. Tried it in a sippy cup as well. What can I do?
