I feel so ashamed to be writing this but no one in my life is getting it and I’m judging myself so much and I know others are as well but I’m just struggling really bad. My 3 and a half year olds behaviour is getting out of control, I struggled really bad when I first had him and I feel like I’ve never fully recovered from that first initial lack of bonding. I had another baby back in March and his behaviour had started to change before then to the point I was really regretting the fact I was about to have another because I was worrying about coping and now it’s reality it’s awful. We put him into nursery some more hours just to help me out with the new baby and to get him to socialise a bit more but it’s now to the point we’ve had to increase again as he’s lovely there but just hates me. He’s shouting in my face, scratching, biting, hitting, kicking, throwing things at me, pulling my hair, he never ever listens to me and he’s now started to squeeze the babies arms, smothering him by trying to get on him to cuddle him and he’s recently just started hitting, kicking and smacking him. He now wakes in the night screaming and will then go into this awful mood which lands him in time out at like 3am. Trying to brush his teeth is like dealing with someone who’s possessed and the refusing of getting dressed is ridiculous, he’ll only wear the same 3 tops and is stripping off if they’re not ready and will start lashing out. He hates bath time and trying to wash his hair is another thing, as soon as you try he throws anything and everything at you. The health visitor was helping but I’m so embarrassed and drained I tried to do it on my own as I’m his mum and I should be able to handle him. He keeps running off whenever we’re out so I can’t take them both out, we’ve had 2/3 trips out since baby has been born. We use the time out method but he now slams the handle down and snaps the lock whilst scratching and pulling at his skin. I sat there today, cried and said that I didn’t like him, everyone looked at me in shock but it’s really that bad, all I ever wanted to be was a mum and a completely different one from how my mum was with me and I’m failing. The health visitor went to his nursery to see how he was and how they deal with him there but she’s said he’s absolutely fine and the nursery gave me their behaviour procedure which we’ve tried but it’s really not working at home. What am I doing so wrong 😩

A few things occurred to me when reading this. Teeth brushing…it might be worth trying oranurse which is flavourless toothpaste you can get through Amazon or online. It seems he has sensory issues to clothes maybe the labels or seams? Swimming goggles might help with the hair washing. Maybe it’s the coke bottle effect so he’s fine at nursery i but explodes once he’s at home with people he feels safe with. The running off as well…keep trips short, use distraction ie playing games and build up confidence. Maybe visual schedules at home might help. Your doing nothing wrong and it will get easier x

Could he possibly be jealous and lashing out because of that regarding the new baby? Maybe the sudden change isn't helping from being an only child to now suddenly having a sibling?

Hiya lovely :) assuming he isn't asd and doesn't have sensory issues - I would say firm boundaries can help and being persistent and don't give into his behaviour. Remember that you're in charge and you're the adult. I know how difficult it is to have a strong willed child and I can honestly say you're doing the best and you're a good mum 💓 xx

I'm a nursery practitioner so feel free to messege me :) x

Have you read Hunt, Gather, Parent? Maybe that can help

"Everyone was asleep, except me. I was wide awake. I was preparing for battle. I was going over in my head how to handle my next encounter with the enemy. What will I do when she strikes me again? When she hits? Kicks? Or bites? It sounds horrible to call my daughter “the enemy.” Goodness knows, I love her to death. And in many ways, she’s a wonderful little person.

Now Rosy was three years old, and all the crying had morphed into tantrums and a torrent of parental abuse. When she had a meltdown and I picked her up, she had the habit of slapping me across the face. Some mornings, I left the house with a red handprint across my cheek. Man, it hurt."

Some kids really struggle when the second baby comes along. They get really jealous and scared. Can family look after your baby for a couple of hours whilst you prioritise him for the day and make it special. It's all about him.
For the teeth brushing, make a game out of it. I found the oral B app quite helpful. It's a cloudy picture and the more you brush the more it shows the picture. I would act all excited to see what the picture will be. Mine loved that.
When he slaps and hits, if you respond It's giving him the attention he probably craves. I would ignore it and walk away from him. As soon as he calms down give him loads of attention.

Check out big little feelings on insta, they have some really great advice dealing with this stuff.
My main thought is that time outs aren't as effective as "time in". Sir with him, stay calm and say that you won't let him do x because of y, stay with him and remain calm until he calms down too. Big little feelings explains it a lot better, but it's about acknowledging their feelings and helping them through it, rather than punishment xx

I just want to give you hug, parenting is so hard!
Things that I have found useful in managing with my little one when she’s being really difficult has been: Biglittlefeelings on insta, Mrchazz (also on insta) and the book “there’s no such thing as naughty”- they have a section about life with new siblings and trying to ensure that each child has their own special time with you each day, even if it’s just 10 mins. I’ve found for us it is as much about regulating myself as it is about being able to regulate her in those situations. Following on from what I’ve read I try to ensure I give clear boundaries and I don’t give in if she has a tantrum-which can be really hard, and I also give her choices (that ultimately lead to the thing I need her to do but makes her feel like has some control). Can’t imagine how difficult it has been with a baby as well. Sending big hugs xxx
