Has anyone got any experience with jaundice in a 6 day old baby?
We came into hospital yesterday as her level was 380 (anything over 270 needs treatment if born at 37 weeks apparently).
She’s been on the phototherapy machine since 4pm, it’s almost 4am and will be turned off soon, then she will have 12 hours off the machine and wait and see if anything’s improved and find out if we’re going home or staying another night or two.
Has anyone had experience with this and can help me understand how quickly the numbers can go down? I’m so worried 😟
We had been mentioning for a few days that she was going yellow, but everyone said it was fine. Then yesterday morning (5 days old) someone agreed to do a blood test and we were rushed into hospital for treatment as the level was very high.

My son had it he started getting better at 2 weeks x

Hey, My boy was 36+5 and we were in hospital from the day he was born until day 4, readmitted on day 5 and then stayed in until day 7 because he was having phototherapy.
You said they will turn the box off soon - is that because his levels are now under 270? Otherwise I'm not sure why they'd turn it off? My boy was under the lights for 2 or 3 days at a time, having heel prick tests every 12 hours to check his levels. At times he had to go under double lights because he was not responding. When his levels were under the treatment level, they would take him off phototherapy and then wait 12 hours to see what happened to his levels. We were in so long/ readmitted because his levels kept rebounding (going back above the treatment line when he was off phototherapy). So unfortunately it can take days. And then when you think they are done, they end up back under the lights. Sorry that won't be what you want to hear.
The good thing is they've caught it (well done). And there is very unlikely to be any damage...

To your baby - it's just horrible for you them being stuck in the box and you having to stay in hospital.
My son had prolonged jaundice so we are still under the care of a consultant (he is 15 weeks old now). For about 2 weeks we were going into hospital every day (when he wasn't admitted there) for heel prick tests. When they were finally satisfied he was not going to rebound again, we had to go back for full blood counts every 3 weeks to continue monitoring his bilirubin levels. So it can be a long slog.
Well done for catching it though and I hope your daughter recovers much more quickly than my son! X

Sunshine! Get them out in the sun and the vitamin D helps

Put them in the light for ten to fifteen minutes at a time, three to four times a day. The sunlight helps to break down the bilirubin.
