4 month not sleeping through the night

Hi all, my little boy is just over 4 months and has not once yet slept through the night. He wakes about 3 - 4 times during the night each time having some feed. Does anyone have any tips to help this?
My mum used baby rice around this age, has anyone had any advice on this?

Right now you could be going through the sleep regression that happens around 4 months.

Has you LB fell into any sort of routine yet? Like my boy signals that hes tired around 9pm so we do a feed then, put him in his swaddle bag, put his night light on, put the otter on heartbeat mode and once hes been fed, burped and a little cuddle he’s usually fast asleep by 9:30pm and will sleep through till between 7-9am.
I have noticed a difference (i dont know if its coincidence or not) but he seems to be sleeping better now that i’ve started to wean him. He gets a small bit of porridge at 11am and a small bit of pureed veg between 5/6pm and he’s started sleeping through the night (please see HV before weaning, i’m weaning early for specific reasons).
My boy is 16 weeks now and I started weaning at 14 weeks but he started putting himself in that routine but still waking at about 12 weeks x

While it may not seem it, it’s really normal to be waking multiple times a night. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to babies, temperament is huge when it comes down to sleep. They do things in their own time. Realistically it’s too late to start swaddling because you need to transition out of it before they start to roll (which will come fast).

Not recommended to wean before 6 months to give your baby time to develop internally before starting solids. This guidance changed 20 years ago.

We've never slept through - we are 18 weeks and currently waking hourly. We are ebf and I'm just ploughing on assuming it's the sleep regression and will eventually pass 🫣

Avatar

yes I did think about the sleep regression. Our routine is very similar for when he goes to bed. I think he is just a very hungry boy as downs each feed I give him 😅

Avatar

Have you got your little one in a routine? We started young but we do bath bottle bed and my baby started doing stretches for 4-6 hours and now he sleeps through xx

Avatar

we have transitioned from the swaddle already as he is showing signs of wanting to roll, so crazy how that has come around already!

Avatar

that’s good to know there are other mums going through the same thing, reassuring I must say! Keep our fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Please don't think it's the norm for babies to sleep through the night - it really isn't and it's an unrealistic goal / hope for most of us. There are a lucky few whose babies will x

You aren't alone! My little one is a terrible sleeper. I barely noticed the 4 month regression. She has never slept through the night and some nights won't sleep in her cot at all. I'm praying for the day she sleeps for 4 -5 hours!

Avatar

My baby is 17 weeks and still wakes 2 or 3 times every night. It’s more normal than you think…

I was told if they’re consistently draining the bottle, up the amount of feed by an oz. Could try this. But they are contending with a lot at the moment, like regression, leaps, growth spurts, teething etc. xx

My little one is 4 months and has never slept through. He will wake up minimum twice for a feed. He's breast fed at night too. There are times where he won't go back to sleep so last few nights ago he was up at 2am for a feed and was still awake at 4am. He won't self soothe back to sleep either. So I can understand it might be difficult.

Have a look at your little ones nap times. My little one doesn't sleep much during the day but if he's still asleep at 5:30pm ill wake him up and play him out so that by 7:30pm he's ready for bed. He will have a feed and fall asleep on the boob. Then he's out until 12/1am where he will take for his next feed xx

My baby is 3 months old and has been on the same schedule since he was born, waking up every 3 hours day and night to eat 🥲

Avatar

My baby is 15 weeks tomorrow and wakes 2 or 3 times every night. She used to be able to get a few hours in before waking for the first time but I’m lucky if we get from 10pm-1am! Xx

Echoing the above. My LG is 15 weeks and has never slept through the night. The most shes done is 5 hours and that was a one off. She usually wakes up every 2-3 hours (EBF). Sometimes she'll get up and doesn't go back to sleep after an hour. And usually after 7am, she tends to wake up hourly! Funnily enough, I think the only time I remember getting the most sleep was when she was a newborn. Around 6 weeks, everything changed including her "routine". Praying for the days she sleeps regularly and consistently but telling myself this is all normal and will pass x

Totally normal for babies to wake up frequently! In fact, it’s protective against SIDS. Some babies will sleep through but the majority won’t for a long time! It’s difficult but we will get there one day 😊

“Sleeping through” means between six and eight hours of sleep. My baby does this but has never slept “through the night” from 7 to 7! Nor do I expect him to until he’s established on solids.

My baby is 15 weeks and still hasn’t slept through the night, not even close. I think she’s starting to go through the regression now as fighting naps and up every 1-2 hours during the night. Before this the longest stretch she did was 5 hours. Although this heat isn’t helping either

My baby is 4 months and never slept through a night either

Avatar

My daughter (now 6) didn't sleep through the night until she was 18months. My son who is almost 4 months hasn't either.

Avatar

My friend’s baby just turned 6 months and she’s still waking every 2-3 hrs. I think which baby sleeps through the nights is down to luck. Of course there are things you can do, according to sleep experts anyway.

My little girl has slept through since 7 weeks, don't know how she just has a last bottle at 9ish then put her in bedside cot and she goes to sleep herself and wakes up at 7ish, she was constantly awake crying before that when newborn, Im use to the sleep now I don't think I would cope if she started to wake up in night 😂

Avatar

The ones that get quiet nights are lucky. I’m lucky that mine only gets up once and that isn’t every night. I can never get mine to nap through the day she has about 2 hours through the day in 10 minute naps.
You could try dream feeding when you are ready for bed to get another couple hours or so but I would recommend googling to make sure that is right for you.

Only recently has my little girl gone down to waking once or twice. Every baby is different.

8 week immunisations

My 8 week old has his first set of injections tomorrow and I’m abit nervous. Does anyone have any advice for after the jabs? I know they get a temp after so have got some calpol to give just before hand. Should I put him to bed in less clothing to make sure he doesn’t get too hot? Any tips from your experience with first set of immunisations? Am I worrying more than I need to? 😅

11 month old constantly standing in cot

Please tell me someone has some advice for this cause wow it’s trying. My almost 11 month old is fully on the move now and his new favourite thing is repeatedly pulling to stand in his cot. The problem is that he wears a sleep sack (mainly so his legs don’t get stuck between the bars tbh lol) so he’s not stable enough to lower himself down. So earlier he fell backwards and hit is head and now we feel like we can’t just leave him to it. Typically it’s his first full day at nursery tomorrow and my first day back at work IT’S LIKE HE KNOWS!!
Please tell me someone has some tips. Currently we are quietly placing him back on his back every time but he just keeps doing it! 🤣🤡

Took 9 week old to a family party where there was loud music and she was next to the speaker for most of the time (about 3 hours). She slept through most of it. Do you think she has hearing loss from this?

Freaking out right now :(

Struggling in the 4 month regression

How are people getting out of the 4 month regression? I’ve been looking it up and it says I need to be trying to put him down drowsy but awake but this does not work for my LO. Every time we do this he ends up being wide awake and after almost an hour of trying we have to contact nap/rock to sleep. I want to avoid rocking to sleep because now when he wakes up in the night he needs to be rocked back to sleep which he never used to need.

Nights are constantly broken because we are up 2-3 times to rock him back to sleep. Please give me your tips on how to survive this and how to get out of this!! Constantly feel like I’m failing and doing something wrong
