Glucose test

I have a glucose test booked, wasn’t told about it, it just appeared on my badger notes and haven’t been asked about diabetes in family either. Not sure if it’s becoming a mandatory thing?

It's mandatory so you should have got an appointment. Mines booked exactly 6 months.

oh really she said to me they only do it if family has it or i'm high risk. I see her again soon so i'll have to ask xx

It’s not mandatory but they offer it if you are ‘high risk’. It’s still just an offer so after doing your own research you can accept or decline.

This doesn’t make much sense. Why some people are told it’s mandatory and some told it’s only given if high risk. Don’t know why we aren’t all just told the same thing. The NHS should be the same thing no matter what. I’m super low risk, have absolutely no health problems and no medical history in the family. So don’t see why I would then be having it if it’s only offered to those who are high risk. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy to have it either way. I just wish information was all the same throughout the NHS

I told them my gran has diabetes but she said that wasnt a factor. I have to get it because of BMI

yeah this is exactly why doing your own research is super important when it comes to your birthing decisions. Each trust says something different so misinformation is so easily spread 🤷🏻‍♀️

The criteria is standardised and should be the same throughout the UK. When in doubt it is always better to clarify with your midwife. They would offer it only if you are high risk i.e age >40, BMI >30, 1st degree relative with diabetes, prev baby weighing >4.5kg, prev GDM, PCOS, ethnicity: black(african/caribbean),south asian, or middle eastern even if born in the uk, prev gastric bypass surgery. However they may also offer it to you if you have significant glucose in your urine, baby’s large for dates or if there’s too much amniotic fluid.

They told me the only cared about my immediate family like parents or siblings, nobody else in the family

In my last pregnancy I had just the fasting blood test to check my levels because my dad has diabetes and actually ended up with GD diagnosed at 32 weeks because I was measuring ahead etc and something to do with what they found in my urine. Then had to the GTT and that’s they found out. This time I’m just getting treated as having GD so just monitoring my blood sugars etc so far so good x

Definitely mandatory. Sounds like some hospitals are cutting corners.

No birth services in the UK are mandatory

It was recommended for me to have last pregnancy cus my dad is diabetic. I had the rest.
This time is not having it Xx

Yeah, my midwife said it’s not mandatory but since my grandma has diabetes I’m gonna have to do a glucose test, which I’m dreading - i hate needles and they always fail to get my veins 😭 so having to do it over and over again in one day won’t be fun 😭
