Am I doing something wrong?
My little girl is 3 days old, we have been at home 2 days so only just getting into the swing of things.
She will sleep right through the day, I try and wake her for feeds but when I do she isn’t interested so I wait for her cues and she feeds well when these come.
However the past two nights she is just awake right through the night, constantly crying. Constantly wanting to feed every 5 mins but will latch on suck a few times or for 5-10 mins then fall asleep, so I put her down and try and sleep myself and she starts crying and yelling again😓.
I really love breastfeeding but feel I’m doing it wrong for her to sleep all day and wake crying all night 😓 so I’m tempted to go bottle which I don’t really want to do.

getting some rest in the day, but feel I need to be doing something so she stops crying all night 😓

I just don’t know what to do at night when she’s screaming.
Does there own rhythm change then?

You are absolutely doing everything right, your baby doesn’t know the difference between day and night yet but also they must somehow know the difference because they generally feed more at night to increase your milk supply. Your milk producing hormones are at their peak overnight (unfortunately for us mamas) it’s either by force of nature or they somehow know this, they feed more at night to stimulate production. This WILL pass once your milk supply is where it needs to be and your babies tummy is big enough to hold that bit extra. Everything you have been doing is right and things will get easier. Don’t put any pressure on yourself to do things you can’t do and let your body rest and get some sleep in the day where you can. Be kind to yourself xx

It’s nothing to do with how your baby is being fed. It’s normal for newborns to have their days and nights the wrong way round

Firstly congratulations on your baby girl❤️Be patient youre baby is still getting used to to the world sleeps at day time cause she was sleeping in your tummy when you were up and about and would be awake while you were sleeping. Also with feeding she is still learning and it kinda depends fro. A baby i had a big boy and he would breastfeed for about 30mins at first then sleep for 2-3 hrs as hes belly was bigger so he would be full for longer. Be patient you both still learning each other and things

My little boy was the same - what my midwife suggested was to make sure I wake him every 3 hours to feed during the day, if he hadn’t woken himself. i didn’t have to worry about this at night as like your little one he was constantly waking for boob. I honestly felt like he didn’t sleep at all at night for weeks and I felt the exact same about feeding - really worried me he wasn’t getting enough. Keep going and make sure you speak with your midwife / health visitor … if your little one is gaining weight in the next couple of weeks then you know she is getting enough! You are doing everything right! Like the other comments babies just don’t know the difference with day and night yet and don’t care about keeping you up all night 🙈! You are doing great try and rest when you can xx

You're doing fine! Babies don't know day from night yet so it'll take a while for them to get that. Definitely wake them every few hours during the day for feeds though. And they just want to be held so it's normal they cry when they're put down. Can you sleep when they're sleeping during the day to help you stay awake at night? They'll eventually learn night and day so it's not forever.

she sometimes won’t feed when I wake her though, and she’s so hard to wake in the day time as well xx

ok. She needs to be feeding at least every 3-4 hours though. Is she doing that?

She'd be doing that no matter how you feed her, newborns have day and night mixed up, it takes a while to adjust
If she hasn't regained her birth weight yet you need to wake her to feed every 2/3 hours, whether she wants to or not

yeah but sometimes not much, sometimes she won’t entertain if, or will then will fall asleep

Some baby's have their night and days mixed up and it takes time. My son did the same, his dr said once I was able to move better that a way to help with it is the be sure to stay i a well lit room during the day and to keep the room darker at night so he would be able to better learn the difference. It's completely normal and I completely understand, I felt the same way too, and it sounds like you're doing a great job. Hang in there and do what's best for you and your baby.

Totally normal. Hang in there your doing great 🥰🥰 xx

Absolutely normal. Your baby has no idea about the difference between day and night. At night, she is cluster feeding to build up your supply which again is absolutely normal. Try and rest during the day when you can to make up for the sleepless nights but this does not last forever I promise x

Sounds like she’s clustering which is normal at that age. Your milk is coming in so she’s just telling your body what she needs and how much you need to make. It’s normal for them to be wide awake cause they don’t know days from nights yet so be sure to do different things when it is those times. At night we do sound machine and darkness and make room cool w her in Jammie’s. During day we put on something cooler for her to wear, make it bright etc. you can do wipediwns every few days since it’s no baths yet. Do this consistently everyday around the same time when it’s time for bed and she’ll catch on eventually
Be patient with her cause she’s figuring it out just like you
If you have to put Breastmilk in bottle then do so. I bottle feed my breastfeed baby during the day and do boob at night. So find what works for you and her honestly.

She will find breast feeding comforting and will fall asleep without meaning to because she feels safe. I struggled so much with breastfeeding at the start. I've been doing it for almost 6 months now. My son would drink from the boob and get tired from sucking. I got lots of help for it because I wasn't producing enough milk, he was falling asleep suckling but still hungry. It was very controlled but I'd feed him and as soon as he fell asleep, I'd express milk and then when he woke up, I'd feed from my boob and then give him what I expressed. Over time, I was producing more and more and he was taking more in. I even had to occasionally use formula feed until my milk came in fully. I've spoken to breastfeeding consultants, hospital doctors, midwives etc and now I'm like a pro. Your milk at night is the best quality too so if your LO is waking for feeds at night time, it's actually a great and natural thing. Go with the flow and watch her weight. Don't give up. Message me if you like :)

thank you! So did you feed boob and expressed?

I was going to express some so my partner could help, but I’ve heard babies get mixed up between bottle and breast

That sounds right. I let my baby sleep with the boob 🥰. I took naps during the day while he slept.

yeh I did both. He was getting extra milk because I expressed when he was asleep, I could see my milk increasing, my husband could help and my son is fine on the bottle because he is used to both types of feeding. It so helped a while in that I could freeze some so I could go out and have a bit of freedom without baby there

I’d have your latch checked if you haven’t already. Sometimes babies don’t have great latches, so they struggle to get milk and will not have the energy to feed every 2-3 hours and will cue late.
You may need to feed boob then express and give expressed milk from last session after feeding boob. It’s tiring, but it’ll keep your supply up as you figure out what exactly is happening!
You got this, mama! 🫶🏻 Breastfeeding is a learning process, even for babies.

I Introduced a bottle at 5 days and only did it once a day up until she was 2 weeks. By then we did 2-3 bottles and now 4 a day. My baby is breastfed as well. Find what works for you, the baby will adjust regardless. Introduce with only one bottle brand at a time that way they can adjust to it. I started with avent and that’s the only kind she likes now
