Hi so I have been exclusively breast feeding since baby was born he’s now 1 and I’m still breastfeeding. My breast has never been hard or painful but iv noticed in the last hour it’s gone quite painful and hard and iv noticed no milk is coming out of it like usual.
I’m just getting a bit worried why it’s gone hard/lumpy and painful?
This has never happened and has just come on suddenly well iv noticed it a little while ago
Does anyone know why?

A blocked milk duct. You need to try and clear it - can google for tips! If you get a fever, feel unwell and/or get redness on the breast then you'll need antibiotics for infection (mastitis). I've unfortunately had it a few times 🙄.
Generally blocked ducts happen when baby isn't feeding as much or as efficiently (sometimes if they're unwell or teething etc). Hope that helps!

Probably a blocked duct somewhere! You’ll likely need to feed / pump / massage it out. Hot shower and a lot of massage helped me! X

Thank you both with my anxiety I straight away thought breast cancer :(

iv noticed Iv been feeling very cold and body is slightly aching..

the prob is when I squeeze it there is no milk coming out so not sure what to do

Will it go away in the morning?

Sounds like the start of mastitis. I'm unfortunately an expert! Have you got a fever? I have called 111 twice with mastitis as it was outside usual GP hours. One time they just issued me antibiotics over the phone and another time they got me to see GP out of hours first.

It won't go away on its own. You either need to try and clear the blockage or if it's mastitis, you'll need antibiotics.

I've had this happen loads of times. Fortunately always just managed to avoid it turning into full on mastitis. But the only way to do this is to get baby on that boob as much as possible! I'm not going to lie, it really hurts, but baby is the most efficient at clearing that blockage. Might take a day or so though. Keep baby drinking from that breast until it doesn't hurt anymore.

Get your little one to feed off of that breast, that will help. Try to massage your breaat at the same time. It's important to not stop feeding off of that side. If you are feeling unwell at all then you need to get antibiotics prescribed. Mastitis is extremely painful and can make you very poorly so get on top of it quickly. I hope you get it sorted x

Very poorly in what sense? X

I will just have to wait until the morning to book an appointment with GP would that be ok as it’s too late now

I’m just sleeping now with the kids is there anything anyone could say just to calm me down so o can just get through the night until I can speak to gp tomorrow as I will be up all night worrying x

Hi, how are you feeling this morning? Did you get baby to drink from the blocked breast? X

I’ve had this a few times now and what’s helped is:
. Hot Bath- as hot as you can stand. Lay chest down so you can soak the girls
. Gentle lymphatic drainage massage
. Get baby to feed off that side as much as possible
.avoid pumping and wear loose clothing. No bra.
. Paracetamol if needed and lots of water
. Don’t lay on your front in bed. Keep pressure off
It will go in 24/48 hours but bloody painful until then

thank you so much for checking appreciate it. Last night was so bad I couldnt sleep coz of the pain. This morning when I woke up for the school run and baby had fed from the left breast it felt much better the breast wasn’t rock hard it was still swollen for sure but more squishy again but still sore. Within an hour or two the breast went rock hard again and a bit painful went to see the GP and trust the breast to go back to soft when I see the GP! But she examined my breast I guess to rule out anything sinister and she said it’s likely blocked ducks leading to mastitis as it suddenly just happened she prescribed me antibiotics she said don’t take them quite yet see if I’m in pain again then take them

thank you so much x

Glad it's starting to improve slightly. Maybe try taking ibuprofen? As it's an anti inflammatory it might help too. You can take it at the same time as paracetamol. X

thank you - I keep forgetting whether I’m allergic to ibu 😩 but when I do take para it does seem to do the job I just need pick up the antibiotics x

She might took less in quantoty so you are engorged. It happened to me many times..you can either let her breastfeeding a lot from there and it will improve, before this a massage with some hot clothes , and press with fingers to let come out the milk. after that you can either express or breastfeeding
