Nursery food - UK

Hey guys! So the nursery that my baby is at has given her chicken curry and things like that. I know that the health visitor said she can have anything except salt so I haven’t been questioning it, especially since they said that they make things from scratch. But on Friday they gave her fish fingers, potato waffles and low salt and sugar spaghetti hoops. I phone up and spoke to them, and they are going to do a diff meal for her.. I am annoyed that they should have known better!! Now thinking over the weekend, I have a hole in my stomach, like I don’t feel right. I did say in a form: no sugar, no salt and no preservatives. What is everyone’s thoughts?

They’re a good nursery and my baby has settled there nicely. She is 7.5 months!

ohh Helen! Interesting! Thank you! But they’re high in salt?

The offered banana at the end. Which she didn’t touch x

I personally wouldn't be worried about this meal, if there's a variety in the child's weekly meals. Xx

Chicken curry - can be fine if homemade without salt (we make it and our baby loves it)
But I would be fuming if nursery gave out baby fish fingers or any other ultra processed foods which I don’t think are good for children especially babies. If homemade, fine, but if from a packet I would not be happy.

I think it's unfair to say that to be honest. It may make other people feel a bit rubbish about what they give their children.
I cook freshly cooked homemade food, lots of fruit and veg for most meals.. But my eldest, will also have fish fingers etc. It's all about balance in my view, but then you're entitled to your opinion too 🙂 xx

Not really sure what your problem is… Friday treat day? If it’s processed food everyday then ok, raise a concern or send your own food in… but they have various needs to cater for and can’t do so individually… and it’s one meal from 3 a day

I think it’s about balance. If it was that everyday then sure. But one meal. They are catering for all ages and children so I don’t think it’s terrible.

I personally wouldn't be happy with my child being given ultra processed food. I don't want to judge others as not everyone has that choice but it doesn't make not wanting that for my child wrong. Yeah it's not the worst thing in the world but ultra food is designed to be addictive and isn't a treat in my opinion especially when a baby doesn't know any different.

100% agree

My gripe with it is that these UPFs are being provided in an institutional setting (nursery and schools), where they are not really an occasional treat but part of the regular diet.

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for your comments. I read my post it seems that the post suggested I was more angry than I was… I was just trying to get feelers. Thanks all 🥰

I think people need to be careful about the fish finger debate and “processed foods”. Just because it’s processed in the way it’s put together, doesn’t mean that the ingredients and what’s in it are bad for you. Fish fingers are actually very high in fibre and protein and if you get a good brand, they don’t have any additives or bad things in them at all and can provide omega 3. It’s all natural ingredients. It’s literally just the way they’re put together that makes them ultra-processed.

A lot of healthy foods out there are “ultra-processed”, such as peanut butter, some cheeses, hams, every day tomato passata that’s used in a multitude of things, etc.

Doesn’t make them bad for us if the ingredients in them are good with no bits added in that we’ve never heard of. Not saying daily eating, but moderation is fine.

I think doing your research is definitely worth it with things you’re unsure about, and if it contains nasties, then no. X

It’s not worth the Nurserys reputation- the experience I have had had always been a varied menu x

This is what they serve at these places. A lot of them don't make things from scratch unfortunately. Would be lovely if they did. School is the same.

I thought that but then they said they make everything from scratch. So was taken aback

yes. Must be. Thanks

My friend is over from another country but I don't feel like leaving the house

One of my old friend's is visiting where I currently live and we agreed to meet up today but I feel so tired and exhausted from everything that's been going on with me. I feel if I meet her I'm going to end up having another breakdown from the exhaustion which I have been having often. I'm just thinking about how I need to rest to be able to deal with my toddler and go back to work on Monday without feeling like I need another weekend. I'm torn on what to do so I need you guys to help me decide

Post partum dad

I have a 2 month old. A few weeks ago my husband crashed out because he didn't feel like he was getting to bond with her. I started exclusively breastfeeding around that time and honestly didnt see the big deal. Baby and I left for a few days and when we got back home, everything was fine. He was extremely hands-on. He helped with my meals, her bedtime, bath, stories.....for a few weeks it was great. Then he randomly sounds depressed af. He says our lo is better off without him, he wants to sleep all day , he asks me not to watch tv then tried playing a video game. He refused to reply to me when i asked any follow-up questions. Then he woke up our baby trying to race me to the bathroom first thing in the morning . He's doing a weird mix of crying, trying, and giving up. Im starting to feel like I cant handle him not being able to handle life with baby and just want to be alone. Are there resources for men?

Weaning

Hello mamas, could I get some advice please with how and what to wean as started this week with my baby but not really what to give and when what time day. Have started with puree vegetables and making them myself and offering it in the evening to my baby but she tends to get irritated and tired and has a few spoonfulls and then gives up and has a meltdown. So I’m questioning myself am I feeding her wrong time of day and what’s best to mix the food with milk or baby rice please.

Do I need to pay anything when my child starts school in September

I'm a new mum and obviously didn't grow up in the uk. I currently pay roughly £640 for nursery fees. I'm wondering if my expenses will reduce when my LO starts school or there'll be other expenses (besides bags, uniform etc) will my expenses be anywhere close to £600 monthly?
