Water for 10 weeks old

Hi, new mummy here 🙋🏾‍♀️ does anyone give their 10 week old a bottle of warmed boiled water?
I’m exclusively breastfeeding but my mum insists on giving a water once a day to help with constipation.
Just checking if this is normal ?

Hi, I’ve heard this one too from my grandma! It’s very outdated, not recommended now. Breastmilk gives your baby everything they need, including hydration

Avatar

Not normal. They only need milk at this stage.

Avatar

Breastmilk has everything they need no need to give water

No. It's actually dangerous.

Absolutely not.

Very old school thing to do. My Mum kept suggesting it. After a bit of research it’s definitely not recommended! Breastmilk/formula gives them everything they need.
If you’re worried about constipation, especially when breastfeeding, a lot of the time it is normal for them to not poop for a period of time, as they use up everything you give them. Other times they may just not be getting enough to poop anything out.
I know for me I stopped breastfeeding at 4 months because my LO wasn’t getting enough and soon enough if it was an explosion coming out.
Tummy massage, bicycles, warm face washer on tummy can help. There’s lot of methods out there to try 😊

This is old advice. This is not currently recommended due to evidence it puts too much pressure on their internal organs.
If you bub has an issue with constipation you should be seeing your Dr

Breastfed babies can go up to 6-7 days between poops. Giving water to a baby under 6 months can be dangerous as it throws their sodium levels out of whack. Baby only needs milk - breastmilk or formula. You said she’s giving a bottle of water, that is way to much even for a 6 month old.

Avatar

Shouldn't be giving them water till 6 months old. It's not good for them at all. Should be getting all hydration, everything from breast milk or formula

Avatar

Do not give your baby water - this is very old school advice

Avatar

No water for babies under 6 months. But to make sure baby is hydrated through your breast milk drink plenty of water yourself! I was drinking around 3L a day to make sure my bub was hydrated :)

Avatar

Not recommended for so young, they don't want baby to drink anything except breastmilk or formula, esp water as it fills babies stomach but without giving any nutrients to baby whatsoever. Basically counts as skipping a meal(since baby will feel full) and prevents healthy weight gain

Avatar

just a heads up, it may not necessarily be constipation. Babies absorb everything in breastmilk and it is very common for them to not have any bowel movement for up to a week when breastfeeding! 😊

Avatar

Absolutely no water just milk at this age

Avatar

Nope! You CAN give Hydralyte if directed by a doctor for dehydration, but otherwise boob or formula is all they need.

Avatar

No way stick to breastfeeding until at least 6 months

Avatar

It’s such old advice. Not recommended anymore.
Breastmilk is all they need at this point ☺️

Avatar

My mum suggested this to me too until I researched it so it’s funny reading this post, it must definitely be old school!

Monitor to make sure there is heavy wet nappies and the urine is pale and odourless. If the urine is dark and smelly then bub may not be getting enough milk.
Also if it is constipation, the poo will be dry, hard, or crumbly. If the poo is still soft it's unlikely constipation.

As said above, some breast fed babies won't poo for days sometimes. But if your worried get bub checked 💖

No water until 6m
Old wives tale that babies in hot weather need water, they drink more bm or formula

Avatar

Nope 👎 please don’t do this. It’s very dangerous for a newborn

Avatar

Absolutely not!!! It’s dangerous for them. Don’t listen to anyone but professionals, breastmilk is the only thing they need until 6 months. Constipation is normal, they can be constipated for up to 7 days before you need to give them medicine for it (my paediatrician told me this when my baby was 4 months old)

Avatar

It can cause brain swelling and death

Avatar

Absolutely not. No no no please don’t ever do this!!! No water before 6mo when starting solids (unless mixed with formula) it’s super dangerous to be doing

Avatar

Water for constipation only under the guidance of a medical professional 😊

Avatar

No water until 6 months.

Avatar

No water! Put your foot down with your mum if you have to, it’s not her call!

Avatar

No water. Breastmilk is best for constipation. Quite normal for exclusively bf babies to not poop for up to 10days because their body absorbs everything in breastmilk.

Avatar

Medical professional here…

Do not give your baby water at 10 weeks old. Prior to 6 months, babies should not have water. You put them at risk of unbalancing their electrolytes and risk causing a condition called hyponatraemia which is incredibly dangerous and can be fatal.

Babies produce small amounts of waste (poo) each day as they absorb and utilise majority of the breast milk. As a result of less waste being produced from each feed, they can store this waste until they have enough to do a normal bowel movement. Babies can go 7+ days without doing a bowel movement. If you become concerned at any stage that your little one hasn’t done a poo for a number of days, seek advice from your child health nurse, GP or you can even contact the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby hotline and speak to a Maternal Child Health Nurse.

Help

My LO every feed. Drs don’t seem to think it’s a problem the whole Muslim cloth gets soaked so much I’m using towels now. I’ve tried size O teats he gets really frustrated and still spills it out :(

Of these two, which seems more overall “demanding” to you, overall? Lighthearted poll, not putting anyone down 🫶🏼

As a mum who breastfed for 3 years, I think formula feeding seems 100x harder and more demanding. I give those mamas all the credit because I could not keep up with that faff haha. I truly don’t understand why people say breastfeeding is more effort, other than the fact that no one else can do it. But personally I’d take that over endless bottle prep & cleaning.

8 week immunisations

My 8 week old has his first set of injections tomorrow and I’m abit nervous. Does anyone have any advice for after the jabs? I know they get a temp after so have got some calpol to give just before hand. Should I put him to bed in less clothing to make sure he doesn’t get too hot? Any tips from your experience with first set of immunisations? Am I worrying more than I need to? 😅

Signs of Neurodivergent Toddler

Any moms of neurodivergent toddlers who could help me out? My son is 13 months old. I know that is technically too early for a diagnosis, but I have a gut feeling that he is on the autism spectrum.

The main sign he shows is hand leading. He does not point at all, and instead will take my hand and lead me anywhere he wants to go,
getting very frustrated if I do not follow.

He is also extremely sensitive to being touched, especially when it comes to hats and putting clothes on. He won’t let anything touch his head or face and I have to fight him to brush his teeth, comb his hair, etc.

He’s very interested in things that aren’t toys and will repeat the same behavior over and over. He can go in and out of doors or walk up and down stairs for hours. He loves taking things out of containers and putting the back in repeatedly.

We recently took him on his first vacation and he REALLY struggled with the change. He struggles with any type of transition or change in routine.

He laughs, makes eye contact, mostly responds to his name, but doesn’t do any other gestures.

Normal toddler behavior or signs of ASD? Let me know your thoughts!

4 month sleep regression

Does anyone else feel like they’re back in the newborn trenches through the 4 month sleep regression ?? 😭😭 my boy turned 4 months yesterday and the past 3 nights he’s woken up every 20-40 minutes. He does manage to get back off to sleep after I give him his dummy. It’s so strange though because his daytime naps don’t seem to be affected? He has 2 x long naps a day (around 2 hours) and a couple 30-40 minutes here and there and seems fine during them, it’s just his night time sleep! I read it can last for 6 weeks, I pray it doesn’t because I am shattered 🤣🤣

Is this a normal poo?

Apologies for picture included. 1 year old has had a funny tummy since Friday not watery diarrhoea but very explosive and paste like poo and he’s not being eating as much but been drinking his milk and water normally! Today we had this poo though and it seemed a very chalk like consistency and very pale. Just asking for thoughts and advice really. He did also have lots of cream on his bum.
