I have since our little one was born spoken to him like I would a child/adult - I’ve used proper words and when talking to him I use proper sentences.
However, my in laws whenever they see him, talk to him using baby words like “toothey pegs” for teeth or “bye byes” for naps or talk to him in a babyish voice. It drives me insane!
Is it me being over sensitive?! I just want him to learn the correct language formations and words as early as possible without having to relearn things because he thinks his teeth are toothey pegs! We use rhymes in songs or nursery rhymes so he learns rhyming couplets etc.

I'm so the same!
My husband thinks I'm nuts but I can't stand 'silly' talk.
It's milk and not 'milkies' 🚫
Yes!! Glad I’m not alone 😂😂 it really grates on me!

Some things bother me, toothypegs is one. Pussycat is another, like it's just a cat.
Bye bye I'm ok with as it's repetition like and helps them learn but yeah shit like milkies I don't say.
I do try to fight my battles though, it's mostly my dad who says all the stupid shite and they don't see him much so it doesn't really sink in, so I mostly don't say anything to keep the peace.

Agree, repetition is manageable it's the crap variations of things. My husband was saying these things even before kids 🙈😂
Burgs for Burgers - 😱😱
Repetitions I have no issues with but it’s a nap not bye byes 😫 I haven’t said anything to them as I think it’s not worth it but if I’m asked if he has any toothey pegs I respond with no teeth yet!

I don't say it to others but I tell my husband that I don't like it to hopefully limit the 'silly' talk...I can't not say anything 🙈

It fills in time, so when you talk to them they're hearing you for longer.
Baby talk has repetition, rhyming, and exaggerates phonemes common in the language .. especially the ones a child learns to say first. It gives names that babies can say earlier: Dada becomes daddy become father. Mama becomes mummy becomes mother.
It contrasts similar sounds.
For example, the ending of tooth is indistinct to a beginner. Tooth-ey lengthens and emphasises _th_. Similarly, Toothey Peg gives a contrast of the initial _t_ and _p_ sounds of the adjacent words. Baby learns more about the language than just hearing "tooth".
Speaking correctly to a baby is teaching, but baby-talk is scaffolding.
It is showing them one step ahead of skipping ten steps ahead.
Remember, they babble before they talk. So we talk to them in ways that help them organise their babble.
I understand that but plenty of my friends have talked to their babies without the babyish tones and words and they’ve all grown up to understand the language and speak it very well.
Toothey peg and words that are not what the activity or objects are, to me are irritating. I was bought up without these words and I’ve been just fine ☺️
Thank you for your input though - good to see both sides x
😂😂

I never thought I would be that person but I honestly can’t stop myself saying all kinds of stupid words to my little girl 🤣I almost feel as if I’ve forgotten how to speak to adults now
😂😂
