“Can you ask the small child to stop running and stopping around it’s 10:00 at night and I can hear him walking”
So I have recently moved to this new accomodation it’s an apartment and downstairs neighbour are always complaining. She texted me this on FRIDAY night (tonight) it’s Saturday tomorrow and my sister in law came to stay over night with her one and a half year old child.
I have always been very nice and apologetic all the time. But they literally come upstairs and say that I can hear you walking.
Me and my husband we have literally changed our whole routine and it feels like that we are living according to their schedules. I can’t go to washroom in night I am pregnant, I can’t go to kitchen after 10 pm because if I do they come upstairs. I was once boiling milk in kitchen at 9:45 pm and they came and said “we can hear you walking so please stop”.
It is really frustrating now , soon we will have a baby and I don’t know what they gonna do then. Me and my husband moved from shared accommodation to this independent apartment so that we can have our own privacy and independence. But since then we are here it feels like we are still living in shared house where we need to live according to the people we are sharing house with.
We never organised any party at our place. We are just trying to live our life normally. They don’t even let us on the weekends. When we try to watch something peacefully in our lounge.
Can you please suggest how to deal with it?

I would tell them that you’ll complain to the landlord that they are harassing you for using your apartment in a normal way. If not you could ignore them and not open the door to their complaints. If they knock aggressively you can record and provide evidence to the landlord
you have no idea, it’s a big torture from past 3 months. I informed my landlord in the beginning and he said just ignore them as they were like this with the previous tenant as well.
Ans she never took them seriously. And I didn’t speak to landlord about it after that. But it’s getting way too much now.

Oh Jesus, I thought the landlord might help you with it a little bit more, how awful! You can technically report them for harassment to the police if they become more aggressive if you ignore their requests to live like a statute in your own home. I would also block their number if the texts are making you anxious, it’s not your responsibility to sound proof the landlords property

It doesn't even need to be aggressive to report to the police as harassment.
I'd speak to the landlord in the first instance and then the council/Police who have an operational partnership team to deal with antisocial behaviour from neighbours 😊

Block and delete!! You’re not obliged to reply to them - the more you entertain their demands, the more they will find something else to moan about. Better to just grey rock and direct them to your landlord each and every time.
There are things that your landlord can do to improve the soundproofing - like carpeting the floors or adding rugs - but that’s on them to sort out. Living in a flat will always carry noise.
‘I’m sorry you feel that way, but we are considerate neighbours and live a quiet and peaceful life. Any noise that you hear from our flat is not excessive and is reflective of normal daily life. Please stop contacting us directly about this, we are feeling harassed at this point. Our landlords contact details are X if you wish to discuss sound proofing.’

I’d also add, ‘in a few weeks time we will be having a baby so please expect more movement at night and noise in line with caring for a newborn. I will no longer apologise for living a normal family life, inadequate soundproofing is not the fault of us, the tenants. If you would like to raise a complaint about that, please contact the landlord rather than us directly.’

Great addition Emma!
