Has anyone else experienced randomly just having horrible thoughts of the worst things happening to your child? I struggled with postpartum anxiety and a bit of depression when my daughter was first born and would have these same scary thoughts. Not of me doing anything to her but of other people or random scenarios. Now she is almost a year and a half old and I still occasionally have them. Like horrible thoughts of the worst possible things happening to her. She’s my first child and I’m newly pregnant with our second so I worry about this happening again. I never hear my friends say anything about having thoughts like this so I don’t want to seem crazy for bringing it up when talking about our kids.

It’s actually really common and it’s a type of intrusive thought. I also really struggled with PPA and PPD and I felt horrible for having those thoughts until I found out it was a lot more common than I thought.
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who experienced this. These thoughts would sometimes leave me in tears. I literally felt crazy.

I have these quite often. I talked to a therapist about it and she said it was normal. You are definitely not alone.

Your not alone I have them as well my daughter is 16 months old and I still have them it terrifies me

I do…..sometimes my intrusive thoughts cause me not to be able to fall asleep or I have nightmares. It’s just the scariest scenarios that pop in my head and I almost feel like I have heart attacks from it.

I had it so bad I had to start medication bc therapy wasn’t enough for me. My therapist says to acknowledge the thought for it is, a random transient thought. It doesn’t mean anything will happen and it isn’t fact. If anything anxiety and those scary intrusive thoughts can help us recognize what is important to us, for example our child’s safety! Acknowledge the thought and let it go, but easier said than done.

I commend you for coming forward and asking this question because this happened to me a few months ago and I was scared to tell anyone. As one of the commentors mentioned, you just have to keep reminding yourself that your child is safe with you, thoughts are simply that, just thoughts, not real events, and try to find a coping mechanism to help calm anxiety like yoga meditation… whatever works for you. I had terrible ppa after my son was born and the only thing that helped me was eating my placenta. I know this is probably not the popular opinion lol but i cannot stress how much it helped me. My husband and mom were both able to tell when i had consumed it and when I had not based on my emotional state that day. I froze mine and then defrosted, cut into quarter size pieces and refroze. Every day i would pop a “quarter” into a smoothie. You don’t taste anything weird at all. Happy to answer more questions if you’re curious :) it’s such an easy remedy to balancing hormones post partum!
I might try that this go around with my 2nd child. I’ve never thought about doing that and didn’t even know it would help but I’m willing to try just about anything. These thoughts can just throw me into an emotional anxiety filled mess when they happen. Thank you for taking the time out to give me that advice!
Thank you all for taking the time to comment and help me feel like I’m not a crazy momma. I hate that anyone else has these random thoughts about there child but glad to know I’m not alone in this.

Yup! Never goes away honestly and my kids are 3 and 5. I still check their breathing, I don’t want them alone with other people or riding on the highway…when my daughter is at pre-k I imagine active shooters and what I would do…oh anxiety 😅

I always hve an intrusive thought like atleast 1 a day lol . You’re not alone ❤️❤️

Your brains wired to prevent harm as a mother and part of that is your brain creating scenarios in order to plan a safe outcome. Think of trained soldiers or ppl in movies, they go into every situation with an exit plan, anticipating any outcome and puts a plan on how to get out safely. Our brains are wired to do the same w our kids.

Yes I got intrusive thoughts a lot when she was a newborn. I think it’s more rare not to have them.

Since my son was born I’ve become terrified of dying . Me and him . Me dying to leave him without a mom and anything happening to him would obviously worst thing ever. It’s to the point where I’m scared in car rides and I avoid highways now. Also I have to stay off TikTok because everytime I go on I think I have some kind of cancer or disease. It’s been so bad I feel like I’ve aged 10 years in the last year and a half

I have this exact same issue even just thinking about it rn makes me tear up

Yes ma'am. It's completely normal. So I didn't experience it with my first LO so when it started happening with my second born coupled with the domestic violence I was experiencing at the time it almost broke me. I got away from the abusive relationship and that help some of it the random stuff but I still fear he will be kid napped. He's very little guy and knows no stranger. So what I started doing lately is pretending I find them before the police and he's not the only child and I save them all. It helps. But yes the thoughts are normal. And my sister went through this I would suggest medication after the second LO because she said it was worst the second go around. Her kids about as far apart as yours. Talk to your OB. They have meds that are safe for breastfeeding mom's as well.
