Am I in the wrong?

My little one...is a little bit of hard work. He is fine up till about 2-3pm and then cries and groans/moans until he is picked up. Even then he may still grumble a bit. My partner tells me I can't keep picking him up every time he cries as its unsustainable walking around with him all day long. (My back and arms are killing me) but I cannot not pick him up as him laying there crying just breaks my heart and makes my skin crawl.

I'm completely lost and don't know what to do. My husband just had a go at me as I still keep picking him up. Am I wrong? Should I be leaving him to cry it out sometimes???

No.. pick up that baby. You are totally right ❤️ we don't let our little boy cry alone ever. It's natural they want to be with you.

Ask your partner to help instead of grumbling. Babies don’t cry for no reason. Maybe he’s gassy or winded or needs comfort. Would your partner like it if you ignored his needs?

Avatar

Babies have no other way to communicate other than crying. With cry it out, they don’t just eventually think, “gee, I’m being illogical, why am I crying? I’ll stop.” They give up. Because no one is coming to comfort them. How devastating must that be for a baby to realise the two people who are supposed to love them most aren’t there for them when they need it the most? You hold that baby as much as you want. Maybe the solution is he picks him up for a while to give you a break

Babies crying is their way of communicating to us, they can't tell us with words what they want/need just yet. I wouldn't leave the baby, I'd pick baby up for sure, they need us, they need us for everything, for all of their needs.

What I do when my arms are aching someis lay him on the sofa next to me . Lay him on a soft blanket and make a bit of a nest round him so he feels something around him and rock him gently with my hand. Something like this may help save your arms and back a bit.

Avatar

Have you tried putting him in a sling so you save your arms?

I second all that has been said. You can't spoil a baby by loving them and seeing to their needs. Xx

My little boy is the same 🙈 I always feel torn people always make comments when I pick him up and say I’m creating a rod for my own back 😩 but i don’t want to leave him to be upset and cry

My health visitor said to never leave them to cry as it effects part of their brain
I don't know how true it is, she mentioned a study completed in Romanian orphanages
I totally empathize with the back and shoulder pain

my inlaws made endless comments over Christmas that I never put the baby down and I need to stop doing contact naps all the time. They went out and bought a bouncer chair so I’d put her down occasionally. She hates it.

Avatar

I mean we do contact naps and hold him whenever he needs something or wants comfort but surely it’s too much if you can’t even put her in a bouncer? Too much of either isn’t good. You don’t want your baby having separation anxiety , that comes with it’s own mental challenges 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵

she’s 3 months old. It’s completely normal for a baby to want to be near their mum. She sleeps in her own cot through the night from 10pm to 7am. She is completely fine. And holding her during the day is not going to give her separation anxiety. It’s going to give her a healthy attachment and let her know that she can rely on me. It will tell her I am here when she needs me and help her feel confident within herself. I have done extensive research in infant development. But thanks.

Avatar

that was an extremely defensive response to me saying if you can’t put her in a bouncer it may be too much. Simply put, you can say she does spend time out of your arms because the way you wrote the first statement sounded unhealthy (‘put her down occasionally’ were your words, not mine) and on a post for advice, I’ve given you some. We don’t let our baby sleep in their own cot for 9 hours , we find it’s too much , and like I said; we contact nap and have cuddles all day long. Just so you’re aware, separation anxiety can begin from as early as 4 months 🩵🩵

Avatar

it absolutely was defensive yes. Particularly because I wasn’t asking for advice and suggesting I’m giving my daughter mental health issues all because I comfort her is ridiculous. Did you ask if I put her down in other places? No. She didn’t like the chair. But she loves tummy time, her play mat, her swing and her cot. I was talking about the chair in relation to the story at Christmas. You jumped to a conclusion. It’s perfectly normal as well for a baby to sleep through the night from 3 months. She’s always been a brilliant sleeper. No issue if it’s too much to you for whatever reason but there’s nothing wrong with it.

Deffo pick your baby up they are still so litttle. It’s all new to them this world.

Thanks everyone. This has made me feel so much better and that I'm doing what feels right for me. I do feel maybe men don't fully understand compared to us ladies.

He's 11 weeks today and not sure if he is in discomfort or just wanting held. I feel like I will never regret holding him too much but I would definitely regret letting him cry to the point he is inconsolable or feels I'm not there for him.

I'm just going to keep doing what feels right and, yes, probably get a sling or something to help with my arm!

Thanks mummas!

Is this clever or cruel?

My husband and i were talking and with social media and the internet in general being a terrifying dumpster fire, we are trying to figure out the best way to keep our son safe while still teaching him how to safely be online and moderation.

We landed on the idea of giving him the 90's kid treatment. A computer in the living room for us to keep an eye on what hes doing online, and once we feel hes mature enough to hang with friends without adult supervision he gets a flip phone. When we feel he is responsible enough and he earns and saves up the money for the physical phone, case, and screen cover, then we will be happy to take him to get a smart phone.

I thought this was air tight, but now my brother says its cruel to give a kid a flip phone, and besides he can just use his friends phones at school.

My husband and i remember a time before the internet, and we remember having complete access to something no one understood yet. We saw unspeakable things and are always battling with the urge to put the phone and social media down. I dont want that for my son, especially with his brain so vulnerable still.

Partner no longer wants baby #2

Before our son was born we originally both wanted minimum 2 kids but we were hoping for 3-4. My partner found the birth traumatic to watch and also struggled a lot with the newborn/baby stage. He no longer wants to have any more children and it’s completely breaking my heart. I need another baby. We’ve spoken about it a lot and the options. He said he wasn’t COMPLETELY closed off to it so I asked him to try and work through his feelings and reconsider his decision. He eventually said he definitely doesn’t want another. I know that I will always want one and my feelings will never change. Do we have to break up or does anyone know anything else I can do to help change his mind? Has anyone else’s partner said this and then changed their mind? I don’t want to break up because I adore him and our life together and I’d hate to split up our family for “selfish” reasons and make my son miss out on having both of us together but I just don’t know what to do

Nursery funding

My child turned 9 months last week. I applied for government funded hours nearly 2 months ago and so well within the required timeframe for the April term, however upon receiving my first invoice without the funding applied and having questioned this, I have now been informed that the stretched funding doesn’t start until 4th May.

Has anyone else been told it won’t start until May?

The government site states it should start from April 1st, and so I intentionally set my nursery start and return to work as the start of April for that reason, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to afford the nursery on my sole income without the funding

Jealous of my husband

I’m so jealous of him and it’s making me resentful. We have a ten week old and I’m jealous that he is at work all day. I’m jealous he can leave for lunch and actually eat an uninterrupted lunch. Take a phone call uninterrupted. Chat with a friend he runs in to uninterrupted. Even go to the bathroom when he wants uninterrupted. He comes home from work when he wants. He’s not on a set schedule. Some days are late some are early. It depends on when he’s done. I’m jealous he can come home at 10pm and shower, eat and go right to bed uninterrupted because I already have the baby asleep. He doesn’t have to worry about anything house wise or baby wise because I’ve done it all. Meanwhile I’m covered in puke and crap and smell like rotten milk. When he is home he is VERY active and helpful. So it’s not that. I’m just jealous his world hasn’t changed and mine has I guess. This isn’t something he’s doing wrong so I’m not sure how to get past this. I wish I could keep him home all day because that’s how helpful he is, but I understand he obv needs to work.

Calpol

My mum has just given my 4 year old calpol because he asked for it. He isn’t poorly (although was last week, been fine this week) he just likes the taste of it. My mum didn’t check, didn’t ask, just gave it to him and when I’ve questioned her she said “he asked for it”. Then quizzed 4 year old who said he asked for it because it tastes nice.

How would you react?
