MIL won’t stop bringing battery toys 🙄

We’ve made it clear to all family and friends that we avoid all battery operated toys. My daughter is 18 months old and is way beyond her age skills, and has amazing fine motor skills because she PLAYS. But every time my MIL sees her she brings another battery operated toy that’s totallly non-interactive, just buttons, lights, and sounds. I feel like I seem ungrateful everytime but I can’t stand it… we even wrote in our birthday party invitations that we do not allow battery operated toys in our house.. everyone listened except her. I’m so frustrated. Puppets, books, a doll, bath toys … any of that would be better. 😠

Give them back. Like she comes over and brings a toy. Say out loud in front of baby and MIL "you can play with this while MIL is here but she's taking it home with her when she goes". If MIL protests that, just look her dead in the face and say "we don't want battery toys in the house. If you don't take it home, I'll just be donating it tomorrow".

Avatar

oh I so wish I could! My husband would be livid.. he would rather we put it in a closet and pretend it doesn’t exist.. I’ve been slowly starting to sell them but I wish i didn’t have them in the first place. Thankfully we don’t see her often but it still drives me nuts!!

Avatar

give them away, donate or throw them out🤷🏽‍♀️you said what you allow in your home

Avatar

What about music? I’m just asking out of curiosity. Or do you maybe just play music but not have toys that play music themselves (obviously not including actual instruments)?

Avatar

I hear you but if she’s old she might not even realize unless you call her out lol

Avatar

I’d just donate them to a local thrift store or something and when asked where they were I’d be like “You know how kids are, they lose shit all the time.” 😂

Avatar

My MIL does the same. While I’m not super strict with not having battery toys. If I don’t like the toy I will tell my MIL to take it. Or I will give it away to someone who will love it. She literally gives him new stuff all the time she doesn’t keep track of the toys she’s given him. And even if she did I would say he wasn’t playing with it so I gave it away or donated it.

Avatar

Tell your MIL that if she wants to buy her battery operated toys for her to play with that she can leave them at her house so when the baby comes over she can play with them

Avatar

At least she’s bringing toys… does it realllyyy actually matter which type she’s spending her money on ? She could just completely stop

Avatar

Well you said WE don't want battery toys. So if hubby is on the same page, tell him to step up and enforce the boundary

Avatar

yes it matters if she doesn’t want her child to play with battery operated toys in her home that’s her choice and her child especially if she’s been telling her that every time she brings her a toy MIL she stepping over a boundary that has been set for the home MIL can keep the toys at her house and when baby comes over she has battery operated toys to play with

Avatar

Yeah you could always give them away and then if she asks just say "oh we sent some toys to so-and-so's house so she can play with toys there"

Avatar

I mean yeah it kind of matters… I don’t like feeling like I’m wasting her money. I’d rather she either 1- saves her money , or 2- spends it on something we’d use more.

Avatar

Thats actually a phenomenal idea.

Avatar

I give things back. It pisses off my husband no end but how else will they learn?

If its at someone elses house- I just leave it there.

Avatar

I do it all the time. And sometimes it's even true

Avatar

Not to nit pick, but if the picture is the actual invitation, then no, you didn't say you don't allow battery-operated toys, you said, prefer.

Don't allow and prefer are not the same thing.

Have you actually said this to your MIL in person? Has your partner said you don't want battery-operated toys?

How have you made it clear to everyone?

I told family and friends I would prefer eco-friendly toys, but I'm not mad that they have branched out, so have we. I still prefer them, but my son's favourite toy in the world is a battery-operated talking and dancing goose. It's not eco-friendly but was a gift from my FIL, and my son loves it. Which to me is more important.

Avatar

Does your husband know you all don’t allow battery operated toys in the home?

Avatar

The invitation didn't say you don't allow battery operated toys in your house, it said your daughter prefers child operated over battery operated. That's a bit different.

Avatar

I would donate everything, she eventually will stop buying it 😅😅😅 and I do a registry for her birthday

Avatar

the invitation wasn’t really the point here, that was meant for family we don’t see/talk to as often for her birthday. As I said in that comment they all got the point and we only ended up receiving 1 battery toy for her birthday. My MIL is fully aware that we do not use battery toys, especially if they’re not educational in some way. We’ve had a conversation with her but she still won’t stop being them over.

Avatar

we just play music on a Bluetooth speaker or from YouTube on tv. We don’t like the nonsensical noise making toys that are just push a button and sounds happen type things.

Avatar

It’s almost like she’s doing it to push your buttons, so to speak 😏

Avatar

Incognito, you didn't answer how you have made it clear?

Regardless, it sucks that she keeps doing it despite knowing your feelings on the matter, it's not ok.

I would allow your child to explore the toys and decide for herself if she likes them, and if she doesn't, then donate or sell them. If you sell them, put the money in an account for your daughter for when she is older.

Avatar

Just donate the toy

Avatar

Just curious, what’s wrong with battery toys?

Avatar

Just wondering, genuinely, are battery toys that take a screwdriver to get to the batteries bad??

Avatar

I was thinking about things like a toniebox that are technically electronic but they’re not like a press a button and something lights up and makes a sound type of toys (I think a fair amount of those types of toys are geared toward babies and younger toddlers anyway).

The larger issue here obviously isn’t the toys themselves, it’s that she’s not respecting a boundary you’ve made in your home. Do you think she’s intentionally doing this to spite you? Or she just buys toys she thinks your child will like and isn’t really keeping the battery thing in mind when purchasing?

Avatar

I’m not sure what a toniebox is to be honest.. we just don’t want her to use mindless things that don’t encourage imagination, or self play I also get easily overstimulated so being a SAHM I can’t stand hearing the same sound on repeat over and over again, so anything like that we avoid.
I don’t think it’s to spite me, she just has a shopping problem, and buys things she thinks are cute and that’s that… she’s not a very ‘mindful’ person… I know she has good intentions it’s just frustrating that she is ignoring the boundaries we have set and discussed with her.

Avatar

it’s not really how the battery’s go in, we just want our daughter to have toys that encourage imagine, self play, or are educational. She has one electric book that when she pushes the picture it says what it is. I don’t mind that one because it teaches her words but what my MIL brought yesterday was a light up music playing “aquarium” It was cute and all, there’s just nothing to it besides buttons , lights, and sounds.

Avatar

most just don’t encourage self play, imagination and aren’t educational. I know plenty of parents / kids don’t mind them and that’s totally fine. I don’t judge anyone that likes or wants those toys. But I’m a SAHM and get easily overstimulated, I hate hearing the same sound repeatedly and would rather spend time interacting with my daughter or having her use something that’s teaching her a skill in some way. She has one electronic book that when she touches the picture it says the word, and can do it in Spanish as well. I don’t mind that one because it is teaching her something at least.

Oh okay. I know a lot of people don’t want battery toys because of the safety

I've finally done it

I have finally done it. I have finally become the trope, the stereotype.

I have become bitter, resentful, and very overwhelmed and overloaded. I am very unhappy and hit burnout. And I snapped at my husband last night. I work full-time, and work has been very busy so im working late a lot. Im also in grad school. I also have a toddler that has become VERY clingy with me. My husband works shorter days but commutes, so he usually gets home after me by an hour or more. When he gets home, he usually heads to the restroom for at least 30 mins when he gets home. And now my toddler doesnt want anything to do with him. So im doing all the toddler duties until bed. I dont get 5 mins to myself. Not for almost 2 years. I finally hit my wall. I have also, somehow, become my MILs medical ride service and she somehow has an appt every week, it seems?! Shes not sick!! My husband was complaining that he needs to change routine to fit in a workout sometimes, and I lost it. I have been BEGGING for 5 mins to myself for months. I have been telling him how im not good, im going to burn out for months. And between his attitude and him complaining (which really got me b/c he blames me for not being able to work out?! Saying I need help when he gets home so he just cant workout now) I just lost it completely. I told him how unfair my life has become and I have the entire mental and emotional load and it is just not fair. He got mad at me and said "hes trying" when hes literally not trying at all. What do I do?? No one is taking the load from me! And im done and dont know what to do now.
I do not like this version of me.

AITA?

This isn't a major issue, just wondering if I'm being a bit of an asshole.

• I do shift work, 5 out of 7 days, full-time.
• My partner works from home (mostly, sometimes he goes into the office) M-F, full-time.

Anyway, whenever I have a day off during the week he gets in his feelings when I make myself food (breakfast and lunch) but not him. His reason is he's working, I'm not - Which is fair but I've asked him how many times on a weekend has he gotten up, on his day off and made me breakfast and a lunch to take with me to work? You guessed it, 0.

So basically, just because I'm at home I don't think the responsibility to feed him should automatically fall on me when he manages to feed himself just fine while I'm at work.

Is this clever or cruel?

My husband and i were talking and with social media and the internet in general being a terrifying dumpster fire, we are trying to figure out the best way to keep our son safe while still teaching him how to safely be online and moderation.

We landed on the idea of giving him the 90's kid treatment. A computer in the living room for us to keep an eye on what hes doing online, and once we feel hes mature enough to hang with friends without adult supervision he gets a flip phone. When we feel he is responsible enough and he earns and saves up the money for the physical phone, case, and screen cover, then we will be happy to take him to get a smart phone.

I thought this was air tight, but now my brother says its cruel to give a kid a flip phone, and besides he can just use his friends phones at school.

My husband and i remember a time before the internet, and we remember having complete access to something no one understood yet. We saw unspeakable things and are always battling with the urge to put the phone and social media down. I dont want that for my son, especially with his brain so vulnerable still.

Big vent!

Hi mums.
I'm a first time mum in my 40s to twin boys. They are almost 5 months old and the biggest miracle in my life!
I am struggling!!!
I'm pretty sure I have ppa as my pregnancy was a very high risk and all I remember was crying from anxiety of all the ifs!Thankfully even born at 35 weeks and skinny, didn't need iu time.
My husband is not helping much because he's always too busy with work.He will "look" after them usually between 8pm-12am so I can have a chance to sleep.
He expects me to just sleep when I touch the pillow, even though I hear tje babies crying and him don't really bother because most of the times he'll be on his laptop working.
When I tell him I can't relax to fall asleep because I feel you r neglecting the babies,he says I'm the problem becauae I'm always there with them and don't give them alone time!!
I am angry!!I am furious!!
I can't keep.up.with housework becauae someone alwaya neess me and most of the times they nap I either cook and clean tje kitchen,do laundry or try and take a quick nap.
He doesn't help.around the house,becauae..guess what?always super busy.
I asked him nicely we could clean the house together every Saturday morning so it's easier and quicker for both of us and he said no,because he has a lot of work but probably wants to sleep until 12 or 2.
2 days ago a button of his coat ripped and I told him I'll sew it these days.
Earlier this morning while running late for his work,as always,he weara the coat and told him didn't get the chance to fix the button and sarcastically said..of.course u didn't!!!
I spent all night awake because one of the babies had congested nose and we've been trying to reduce one fees at night.
I wanted to punch him!!He left and I started crying...I cry so much, even at 5 months pp...
I can't go on like this anymoreeeee...
The crying in my ears is constant..my head is always numb..I've gained so much weight and can't find the strength to get back on track..
Even if I try to.find a therapist to just talk,is it gonna help?I really don't know😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Avoidant husband

I love my husband and he is a good man. We have some issues in our relationship however, as he has an avoidant attachment style (finds romance/intimacy/being emotional difficult). This comes from him having to be independent from a young age and having quite an abusive mother.
The issues in our relationship are mainly around a lack of sex and intimacy. I think the problem is that to feel turned on, I need to feel connected and wanted. My husband (being avoidant) will usually make jokes about being horny whereas I would want to have someone make me feel beautiful/sexy to get in the mood.
It sounds terrible but I've sometimes had dreams about exes that would make me feel this way, and the romance we had (eye contact, intensity, deep words). It makes me feel really guilty but I feel like i'm starved of that. My husband would like a lot more sex but I can't always force myself if I'm not feeling it.
We've spoken a bit about therapy but I know its often really expensive so we probably wouldn't be able to afford it. Do you have any suggestions please? I know that neither of us are wrong in what we want, just different but I'm scared about whether we can fix it or if we're doomed?
