Hi :) I’m a nurse so have some insight into NICE guidelines, royal college of obstetrics etc and have settled on the fact I want an elective. I’m 34 weeks Sunday my my midwife appointment is Thursday.. I already have a consultant appointment next week due to growth but not about a section. I’m really anxious to mention it because of the unsupportiveness and judgment surrounding non medical electives but I know I’m in my rights to have one as a maternal request and if they say no they have to refer me to someone who will say yes. But I just want some reassurance! Experience with telling your midwife/referral for your elective booking? Did they try to put you off even though you’ve made a decision

I told my midwife on my first appointment. I’m not 13+5 but already got an appointment with a consultant in June. So I don’t know yet if they will say no or not. But I’m sure about what I want to. So they can’t change my mind.
Jut be stubborn 🙃

Hi ☺️ I totally understand how you feel, unfortunately, I felt some sort of judgment when I did decide to have an elective with twins, from both midwives and doctors alike, and they were trying to put me off a few times!it was 2019 though, so maybe/hopefully things have changed? It’s a very personal choice, just go ahead. Interestingly, nobody blinked an eye when I decided to have a VBAC last pregnancy and this one, nobody ever questioned that at all! Good luck, I hope things have changed and that you’ll find supportive professionals, my ELCS was a great and positive experience xx
I feel like I might have left it later on to mention it but still they don’t book until 39 weeks anyway and I don’t have to give a reason for wanting it but I’m just soo nervous

I've been very honest with my reasons - I am absolutely terrified of natural birth. It's within our rights to choose, I don't think they'd say no. Their obligation is to check if you'd be open to altrrnatives, like support group and therapy for mums who might want to try a different route, but overall it's 10000% up to you! I told them very early and they accommodated all my requests. You'd want to tell them ASAP though, as you'll get referred to a c section senior midwife whose job is to walk you through risks etc. before you see your ob-gyn xx hope it all goes well!!

I didn’t have to fight at all. My obstetrician have an elective herself and the two midwives in my theatre did as well.
She just asked me to give my reason, understand the risks read aloud and that was it.
I hope it’s like this when I mention it! I mean I don’t have to give a reason for wanting one either, according to guidelines it’s just my request and they should honour that but it’s the stigma around it!
I’m not scared of natural I just don’t want one. I know what I want and know that no amount of asking me why or therapy will change my mind really. I just want to mention it this week but just feel ridiculously anxious that they will keep trying to put me off when I’ve already made a decision! X

I didn’t have a medical reason either OP. I just wanted one as my family has a lot of vaginal birth trauma and I don’t want to join the club. They honoured it and it spoke volumes to me that the women who cared for me all chose the same path for themselves x

I had an emcs on 31st Jan. At my discharge appt with the midwife when baby was 3 weeks old I asked them how long between sections. She said as it was my first section I could opt for vbac if I wanted. I said I'd want an elective section next time and all she said was to make it known to my midwife at my booking in appointment next time. I guess every person is different. I've know mum's who have a medical reason for wanting a section (such as risk of ovarian cyst rupture) be discouraged, so I guess it's who you get. But, like you say, it's your decision so stick to your guns x

I was offered a c-section on a plate due to babies size. They literally said I can have whatever I want , natural , induction or elective with no judgment at all 🥰
what size was baby? My growth scan yesterday said baby was 5lb 3oz at 33 weeks!

Baby was born 9lb 7oz, he was estimated 8lb 13oz 6 days before he was born x

My midwife was fully supportive but the consultant not so much. She didn’t want to hear my reasons and I left feeling really upset, she signed me off though so I didn’t care after a while. Best thing I ever did.

I'm 15 weeks and have my 16 week appointment with my midwife tomorrow and I am going to ask for an elective. I had an appointment with my Obstetrician last week as I have epilepsy I am classed as high risk, she didn't even mention an elective as an option only the induction which I thought that was very strange! Surely a C-section is much safer??? I could end up having all kinds of complications and a C-section anyway! 🤦🏻♀️

Tbh I’ve found this post very reassuring that someone in a medical profession is also opting for an elective for non medical reasons! I have my appointment with the consultant this week to discuss, hoping I don’t face any resistance as I know this is what I want x

I’ve had nothing but positivity from everyone I’ve had to discuss an elective c section with. I was adamant from the start it was what I wanted purely because of fear of birth from an induced labour (due to OC) almost 15 years ago. I was referred to a consultant straight away who understood and didn’t question my reasons, just made sure I knew of the risks really. It’s your choice and it will be respected by professionals 😊

I had an elective for non medical reasons. My consultant didn’t try to put me off at all. He just listed the risks which they have to do with any elective procedure and then told me to go away and think about it and if I was still sure he would get me booked in at my next appointment which he did. Had mine at 39+1 and was the best decision I made.
I was already under a consultant anyway due to a previous loss so didn’t have to be referred to one so maybe it made it easier that he knew me quite well.

I also saw on a notice board in triage the number of deliveries in a month. It was broken down to natural births and sections planned and emergency. The number of planned sections was actually slightly higher than natural births which I was quite surprised about. Go with what you feel is right for you x

i told the consultant after my growth scan, instead of my midwife and it was very positive and no questions asked
