How much do your partners go out?

My partner and I are at breaking point (ie me with him) and I’d really like to get some opinions from other people. Pre-baby, my partner would go out a lot. I knew it was a lot as whenever I’d mention it, my friends and family would say “again” and that they’d never known anyone to go out as much as him. I’d go out, but for dinners and day drinks… not 2 day benders.

He suggested he would calm down when our baby was born and to be fair, he has a bit. But it still feels a fair amount and the resentment he holds about “going out the least of all his friends”, is causing major issues.

To put it into context. He will have big events 2 or 3 weekends a month and then drinks after work maybe 2 times a week, but it’s never just a couple. My issue with the big events are, and I’ll give you an example, they are extreme. Last weekend our daughter had a chest infection and he went to a pre-planned golf day. My problem was not him going and leaving me to care for our sick child (although it should have been!). Nor was it the fact he left at 7am and got in at 4am the next day. It was that the next day was Mother’s Day. I got up at 6:30 with our child, he refused to get up and when I made him, he was violently vomiting. He then slept until 5pm.

He will eventually apologise (often over text) and say it won’t happen again. But then it does. When we argue, he says he hardly goes anywhere and that I don’t want him to go out - I do, believe me I like the peace! I just want him to show up the next day like a responsible adult or I don’t know, not act like a 35 year old teenager because it’s boring and disrespectful.

Is anyone else’s partner like this? Am I right to think it’s a lot or is this “normal”?

Only time my partner goes out if we go out as couple his choice

Me and my partner both literally don’t go out anymore. It’s very very rare. He works every night, and I work in the day. We don’t even have dates tbh. Last time we had an actual night out together where we drank together was 6 months ago! And I had a night out with a friend 4 months ago. We did plan a date night a couple weeks ago but our daughter was poorly and so was he so that didn’t happen. But no, this isn’t normal and is a lot!! And completely not fair on you. Sounds quite stressful if I’m honest. I think aswell at 35 years old and having a baby you’d have gotten all that stuff out your system! Of course he can drink but not to the point he can’t be a parent the next day. Hope things get better for you xxx

He sounds very selfish and I can say from experience that likely won’t change.

I completely know how you feel! My husband goes out a lot too, and it’s really hard. He used to go away several weekends a month when our little boy was tiny and it caused a lot of resentment. He’s also left us to go out when my little boy is unwell, and he gets soooo hungover and can’t help at all the next day! He’s 37 too so like your partner old enough to know better!!
Have you tried couples counselling? We’ve been doing this for a few months as I was really at breaking point too, and it has helped. My husband still goes out more than I do and drinks a lot more than he should, but he has reduced his social plans and drinking a lot x

You are right to think it’s a lot, me and my partner try to do something once a month, and that’s just us two! Trying to find time to do anything else between two kids and both of us working, it’s hard! I probably go out 3/4 times a year, mainly for birthdays and it’s day drinking, back home in bed by 9. Not all night benders, that’s crazy, especially with children being involved.

does he have a problem with alcohol in general? does he drink in the week eg not when out with his friends? it seems a lot to me,my husband and I go out very rarely and it is in the day together, he has the odd evening out with work colleagues but will never get drunk but will have a few drinks out son wakes still in the night and he always does his fair share of the work

Avatar

Thank you for your replies, everyone! To answer the question about alcohol , I think he does have a problem. He will often bring drinks back with him to continue drinking at home.

I think a big part of the issue is that everyone I’m surrounded by tells me this is not normal. You guys are telling me this isn’t normal, but he is adamant that all of his friends are like this and feels as though he is being deprived. My friends and family with young children just don’t act like this but because he doesn’t see it in his circle, he labels them as boring and says they must not have any friends! I see it as maybe they just like spending time with their family and like the rest of us, are tired and trying to just juggle life!

I did ask about therapy and he was initially onboard. But then said he thought they would take my side. I then told him he could pick whoever he liked, but he wouldn’t do it.

This sounds like he should be in his 20’s with no partner or responsibilities. Not acceptable for someone who has a young family and no way to be acting when you call him out on it. Sorry your being treated like this

No I don't think that's OK.. it's not fair on you, it's not healthy for him and the older your child gets the more they understand and don't need to be seeing their father in that state. My partner goes out occasionally and gets wasted and is a right off the next day but it's probably twice a year now. The last time he went out I told him he had to have our daughter the next day as I had an appointment...he was hung over and hasn't got that drunk since 🤣

Avatar

If he doesn't want to do therapy because he thinks they will take your side means he knows what he's doing is wrong but does it anyways because he feels he can. My partner goes out often and I say often because I'm a home buddy but it's literally once or twice a month for no more than 4 to 5 hours. He used to go out for longer until I had a word. Told him I didn't realise that I wanted a child and he didn't and that fixed his behaviour. They will take the piss if you let them. If he doesn't change now, he won't. It's not fair to you. 2 weekends a month? That's mental

Avatar

In brutal honesty, it sounds like he needs to wake up and accept he has a child and a family at home. That’s not to say he can’t go out - I think it’s super important for you to continue going out separately and as a couple. And how much that is will depend on how you feel as a couple. But going out on benders where he’s out super early and back super late, or vomiting due to drinking ESPECIALLY on Mother’s Day is just not on. It’s selfish behaviour. I think you have every right to feel annoyed xx

Avatar

To be honest I think the biggest problem you have is the fact he genuinely wants to go out all the time with his friends instead of being at home with you/family.

In my mind that would be a huge problem and unfortunately it’s not something you can force him to change, it has to come within him to see the benefits of spending time at home with his family 👎🏼

Avatar

That’s so rubbish, so sorry to hear that. As others have said if he’s prioritising going out when he has a sick child at home….he’ll NEVER change unless he chooses to but I wouldn’t wait for that day. Either accept his behaviour and crack on or leave 🥲 Hope your situation gets better ❤️

I know there’s been a lot of comments already but I agree that amount of going out is not normal, that is the social life of someone with no kids or responsibilities! My husband had a spell where a lot of his close friends turned 40 so he had a few extra nights out over a couple of months, but now my friends are turning 40 this year so it’ll be my turn!! 😂 We are both sociable people who like going out, so maybe 1 of us will have 1 night out a month, then we get out just the 2 of us a few times a year, but the point is there’s give and take, equal chance to have breaks. I totally get how horrible hangovers are, but that’s exactly why I only drink 1/4 of what I used to….its not fair on my son or my husband the next day. My husband is the same. I hope he sorts himself out for you and your LO sake, and his own!! x

I've finally done it

I have finally done it. I have finally become the trope, the stereotype.

I have become bitter, resentful, and very overwhelmed and overloaded. I am very unhappy and hit burnout. And I snapped at my husband last night. I work full-time, and work has been very busy so im working late a lot. Im also in grad school. I also have a toddler that has become VERY clingy with me. My husband works shorter days but commutes, so he usually gets home after me by an hour or more. When he gets home, he usually heads to the restroom for at least 30 mins when he gets home. And now my toddler doesnt want anything to do with him. So im doing all the toddler duties until bed. I dont get 5 mins to myself. Not for almost 2 years. I finally hit my wall. I have also, somehow, become my MILs medical ride service and she somehow has an appt every week, it seems?! Shes not sick!! My husband was complaining that he needs to change routine to fit in a workout sometimes, and I lost it. I have been BEGGING for 5 mins to myself for months. I have been telling him how im not good, im going to burn out for months. And between his attitude and him complaining (which really got me b/c he blames me for not being able to work out?! Saying I need help when he gets home so he just cant workout now) I just lost it completely. I told him how unfair my life has become and I have the entire mental and emotional load and it is just not fair. He got mad at me and said "hes trying" when hes literally not trying at all. What do I do?? No one is taking the load from me! And im done and dont know what to do now.
I do not like this version of me.

AITA?

This isn't a major issue, just wondering if I'm being a bit of an asshole.

• I do shift work, 5 out of 7 days, full-time.
• My partner works from home (mostly, sometimes he goes into the office) M-F, full-time.

Anyway, whenever I have a day off during the week he gets in his feelings when I make myself food (breakfast and lunch) but not him. His reason is he's working, I'm not - Which is fair but I've asked him how many times on a weekend has he gotten up, on his day off and made me breakfast and a lunch to take with me to work? You guessed it, 0.

So basically, just because I'm at home I don't think the responsibility to feed him should automatically fall on me when he manages to feed himself just fine while I'm at work.

Big vent!

Hi mums.
I'm a first time mum in my 40s to twin boys. They are almost 5 months old and the biggest miracle in my life!
I am struggling!!!
I'm pretty sure I have ppa as my pregnancy was a very high risk and all I remember was crying from anxiety of all the ifs!Thankfully even born at 35 weeks and skinny, didn't need iu time.
My husband is not helping much because he's always too busy with work.He will "look" after them usually between 8pm-12am so I can have a chance to sleep.
He expects me to just sleep when I touch the pillow, even though I hear tje babies crying and him don't really bother because most of the times he'll be on his laptop working.
When I tell him I can't relax to fall asleep because I feel you r neglecting the babies,he says I'm the problem becauae I'm always there with them and don't give them alone time!!
I am angry!!I am furious!!
I can't keep.up.with housework becauae someone alwaya neess me and most of the times they nap I either cook and clean tje kitchen,do laundry or try and take a quick nap.
He doesn't help.around the house,becauae..guess what?always super busy.
I asked him nicely we could clean the house together every Saturday morning so it's easier and quicker for both of us and he said no,because he has a lot of work but probably wants to sleep until 12 or 2.
2 days ago a button of his coat ripped and I told him I'll sew it these days.
Earlier this morning while running late for his work,as always,he weara the coat and told him didn't get the chance to fix the button and sarcastically said..of.course u didn't!!!
I spent all night awake because one of the babies had congested nose and we've been trying to reduce one fees at night.
I wanted to punch him!!He left and I started crying...I cry so much, even at 5 months pp...
I can't go on like this anymoreeeee...
The crying in my ears is constant..my head is always numb..I've gained so much weight and can't find the strength to get back on track..
Even if I try to.find a therapist to just talk,is it gonna help?I really don't know😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Is this clever or cruel?

My husband and i were talking and with social media and the internet in general being a terrifying dumpster fire, we are trying to figure out the best way to keep our son safe while still teaching him how to safely be online and moderation.

We landed on the idea of giving him the 90's kid treatment. A computer in the living room for us to keep an eye on what hes doing online, and once we feel hes mature enough to hang with friends without adult supervision he gets a flip phone. When we feel he is responsible enough and he earns and saves up the money for the physical phone, case, and screen cover, then we will be happy to take him to get a smart phone.

I thought this was air tight, but now my brother says its cruel to give a kid a flip phone, and besides he can just use his friends phones at school.

My husband and i remember a time before the internet, and we remember having complete access to something no one understood yet. We saw unspeakable things and are always battling with the urge to put the phone and social media down. I dont want that for my son, especially with his brain so vulnerable still.

Avoidant husband

I love my husband and he is a good man. We have some issues in our relationship however, as he has an avoidant attachment style (finds romance/intimacy/being emotional difficult). This comes from him having to be independent from a young age and having quite an abusive mother.
The issues in our relationship are mainly around a lack of sex and intimacy. I think the problem is that to feel turned on, I need to feel connected and wanted. My husband (being avoidant) will usually make jokes about being horny whereas I would want to have someone make me feel beautiful/sexy to get in the mood.
It sounds terrible but I've sometimes had dreams about exes that would make me feel this way, and the romance we had (eye contact, intensity, deep words). It makes me feel really guilty but I feel like i'm starved of that. My husband would like a lot more sex but I can't always force myself if I'm not feeling it.
We've spoken a bit about therapy but I know its often really expensive so we probably wouldn't be able to afford it. Do you have any suggestions please? I know that neither of us are wrong in what we want, just different but I'm scared about whether we can fix it or if we're doomed?
