I just found out this week that soon I will be doing dual caregiving. My soon to be father in law had a stroke coupled with other health issues, and will need someone around 24/7 when he comes home. His partner is moving away and our family will be moving to a new place with him in our area. Does anyone else care for a child and a parent at the same time? A little overwhelmed and looking for any advice.

I had to take care of my mum while pregnant and then obviously a newborn and it was very overwhelming honestly, the best I could do was try to get them on the same schedule but even then it was difficult because obviously a newborn has no idea what “routine” is and taking care of a parent with dementia is no easy task; unfortunately it got to the point where I eventually had to put her in a nursing facility where they could take better care of her needs and I could get a “break” and just focus on taking care of my son.
Ideally I would have loved to have had a nurse come home and help take care of her so if that’s something that’s feasible for you I would highly recommend going that route so you don’t have too much on your plate. It can be mentally and physically taxing. Best of luck to you!
