Hi,
My kid is bitten in multiple occasions in his nursery. The biter is a repeat offender. I have talked to nursery staff telling them I understand that maybe the other kid is having a hard time coping or teething. They have talked to the parents and telling me they will do a close observation with the kid. Today, I saw a swollen bite again. Im a bit frustrated that my child might get this habit and bit his new baby sibling plus the fact he always get a swollen bite from this kid. I asked the nursery over and over again if my kid did initiate something to cause this biting. They always told me NO.
How do you deal with this?

I would be mad. I think I would pressure the nursery to maybe do some work with the biting child and watch him closer since clearly they don’t have it under control. They’re not just there to simply watch the kids they are there to prevent such situations and actually teach the kids how they should behave, it’s primarily parents role but they should uphold it also. Why haven’t they resolved this with the child’s parents by offering alternatives for him to maybe carry something he can bite when he feels the need rather than biting children? They should be on him to observe his cues or triggers for when he bites and be there to redirect him away from other kids. My son tried to bite when he was a toddler and it was easy for me to make it clear to him that it hurts and he’s not to do that as well as redirecting him to his chewing toys and he was only maybe 1 and a half or two. It happened only 2/3 times every time I told him in a stern voice no we don’t do that, this hurts and that was it

So sorry to hear that your child’s been bitten. My child has also been bitten over last 2 weeks by 2 different children. My child has also been a biter when he was around 18months-1.5. I wouldn’t ever want to put blame on parents because it can be horrible enough as a parent to hear yours child’s bitten someone and it’s not a reflection on them or their parenting. As well, the nursery can’t take responsibility for children biting others as it is a typical part of development. You have every right though to ask how that child is being supported and what the nursery are doing in collaboration with the parent to reduce and eventually prevent this from happening anymore. Changes won’t happen overnight. Nursery perhaps need to do closer 1:1 observations of them if they have capacity to do so. Especially as the bites are swollen it’s obviously a significant bite. Definitely speak with the nursery because of course your child’s safety is number 1. Hope u get it sorted and feel supported xx

I think if you threaten to leave and then leave a bad review if you do leave they would be more inclined to take action.

My eldest was a target for one child at nursery and on the last occasion she was bitten she was left bleeding. Nursery were really good about it as the first time she was bitten I was like these things happen, second time slightly annoyed and third time I was livid especially as the skin was broken. I spoke to nursery and raised it as an issue with the office and room manager. They explained the biter would be having 1to1 support (and my child wasn’t only target) and that they would keep my child away from them. She wasn’t bitten again and didn’t copy the actions as we spoke about how she felt when she was bitten and consequences for someone else in that position.
Definitely speak to the nursery and raise an issue or complaint as they are there to help and want you to feel your child is safe in their care.
this is the same with my child. I talked to the manager and the office about this. They said they talked to the parents (Im no blaming anyone) but it must be something why the other child is a biter. Kids goes through all the stage and at one point my child bites too but it was just me he bite. I corrected this behavioir straight away cause I dont want to get the same issue that my son is a biter.
I am at my wits end here. I have talked to them and same child kept on biting. I dont blame the parents, must be horrible for them too. But I can’t just stay still my child is taking all the other childs frustration.
I have been decent enough with the nursery and I just dont know what to do, just frustrating to see my child goes home with a swollen bite every other day. As a parent I need to do something, right?
I am thinking to get him transferred soon too. This is not one or teo incident. It happens a lot. Thats why I asked if my kids did something to initiate the behaviour of other kid, they said “NO, it happens on the wrong place at the wrong time”
Well, he is in nursery, does it mean he is the wrong place? I talked to them multiple times and still my son goes home with a swollen bite. 😭
my child goes through the stage where he bit me but I corrected him and he didnt bite anyone just me and himself. Childres goes to this stage where they are frustrated but its hard to see my child gets bitten by the same children over and over again.
For multiple occasions I always talk to the staff on how they are dealing with this and why this keeps happening. I dont feel my child is safe under their wings. I dont blame anyone but I think this can be redirect to something else not someone else.
I am livid. I just dont know where to put my anger about this. Obvi, I cant blame anyone. But I am so frustrated my son should enjoy his 4hrs in nursery not traumatise cause of the bite 😭

I definitely think if you’re not happy, your child comes first and you should move him if you feel that’s best x

I agreed with that I would be looking at other nurseries should I not feel comfortable or feel my child is safe at nursery.
It’s such a hard call but I’ve always felt the nursery we attend have an open door policy to raise concerns and these have been listened to and respected, then action has followed to rectify the issue.
If there are multiple rooms for his age group, can you ask to move rooms? (Maybe an option).
